This is cliche'd by now, but seriously, I am very surprised this is still available. Maybe I'm the only grungehead here though....
Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)
The best band of the 90's most memorable and influential album. The first six songs on this things are all probably in my top 50 songs ever. This iconic album includes Come As You Are, In Bloom, Breed, Polly, Lithium, and the pinnacle of the album and definitely a top 10 song ever, Smells Like Teen Spirit. All with their heavy and poetic lyrics, memorable riffs, they are all unforgettable songs that I can't go a couple weeks without hearing.
I want to say more about this album, but that's basically it. Excellent in every sense of the word.

The Clash - London Calling
Hailed by Rolling Stone as the greatest album of the 1980s it technically came out in 1979 but didn't arrive on our shores until the new year.
While I am more of a punk purist at heart, this gets the nod over their debut thanks to its musical diversity. Not to mention a double album is a good thing to have when you're marooned on a desert island and can only pick 20. This album really has all the bases covered - whether that be their punked up cover of the rockabilly Brand New Cadillac, upbeat ska/reggae such as Rudie Can't Fail and their reworking of Stagger Lee into Wrong 'em Boyo, the more dread-reggae stylings of Guns of Brixton to pure pop in the "hidden" Train in Vain. Other favorites include Death or Glory, Clampdown, Spanish Bombs and The Right Profile, a sad ode to the woes of Monty Clift.
Then there are two of my favorite songs, ever.
First up is Lost in the Supermarket, I'm pretty sure this would make my life stranded on the desert island seem wonderful compared to this poor sad sack. This song is one of the rare few that can be both depressing and uplifting all at once, depending on where you focus. And its always in the back of my mind whenever I enter a Costco or Target store.
Then there is The Card Cheat, the Clash did their own take on the Wall of Sound here recording everything twice. The grand piano opening and the tale of the card cheat who is discovered and shot on the spot stand out the most, but there's plenty more to this one - and on many occasions I have hit the repeat key to give it a second or third listen.
Not to mention this is probably my favorite album cover of all time - an homage to the King along with one of my favorite rock and roll photos ever. Not sure if they still have it, but in 2000 I got stuck in Cleveland for a few days and gazed in awe when I stumbled upon Paul Simonon's smashed up bass guitar.
I could rave on about this album and The Clash in general for hours but I think I will stop here before I do something dumb like accidentally press the refresh key and have to type this one up again.

I'm glad you picked this one, as it justifies the decision to leave it off my list -- I knew someone would take it, eventually, and didn't want to become attached to too many and see them snatched away.
Absolutely agree on "Lost in the Supermarket." It's one of my very favorite Clash songs.
If you saw my list it would've been obvious. I've only got 2 or 3 more that I expect competition over. After that I think I'll be delighted if anyone else nabs my not so obvious picks as I don't know many people that share the same tastes.

Maybe we just didn't know that was the Clash?
My ignorance can know no bounds at times! 
Of course neither of those songs are particularly indicative of the Clash's body of work. London Calling is a great starting off point - you can go backwards if you want rougher stuff and forwards if you want the more experimental (they released a triple album a mere 12 months after London Calling - 5 albums worth of material in such a short time is astonishing, especially by today's standards).

Well, Nevermind was all queued up, only to be snatched a couple picks ahead of me. Early 1990's was when I first began to explore music. Nevermind was the first rock album I ever purchased myself. This album was the second.
Pearl Jam - Ten - 1991
This album is amazing. It expanded upon the blossoming success of the Seattle grunge scene. This has so many hits on it its ridiculous. Once, Even Flow, Black, and Jeremy are all some of my favorite songs of all time. My personal favorite song from Pearl Jam is Yellow Ledbetter, which came out of a recording session for Ten and appeared on the Jeremy single. I absolutely love this album.

This album brings back several different memories, and if I'm stuck on an island I want a variety of music that will evoke those memories and make me feel less lonely. Not to mention:

This is a CD that I often put on in the car and an hour later wonder where the the past hour has gone.
Again, one of the first albums I ever listened to that I can just play over and over and not get sick of any of it. I kick myself because when I first picked up the album I really didn't get around to listening to it for a few weeks. During that time she put on a concert in a small venue in a small town close to mine and I could have gone but didn't because I didn't "know" her music yet and didn't want to spend the meager funds I had at that time on something I wasn't sure I'd enjoy attending. After I listened to the album a couple times to get a good feel for it I was really bummed about my choice not to attend.
