Bye, bye Stankonia. That is a great choice. Ms. Jackson was the first hip-hop song that I heard and went "I need to hear more of that."
I remember that song was huge at my (middle) school that I was in when it came out. Why is that important? Our middle school was completely white kids and a few mexicans. No black kids. Mostly upper-middle class. Yet this unorthodox funk song took us by storm. (I guess, with it being a huge nation-wide hit, that we werent the only white school high on it
)
I'm glad it did because then I was introduced to 2Pac, Nas and other artists that are actually good at rap. Its too bad rap then and especially now is so full of crap that the good stuff is sometimes very hard to get to.

The Green Day and OutKast albums were both on my list of alternates, but I can live with their loss.

Bruce Springsteen -- Born in the U.S.A. -- I just had to. Never thought it would still be sitting here (The Boss's iconic album with a #3?), and my other choice for my #3 has a strong backup plan + I have a hard time seeing them both getting taken before I get another shot. In any case Born in the U.S.A. is such a famous album it almost does not need selling. But here are the stats anyway: 15 million albums sold in the U.S. alone. Over 20 million worldwide. SEVEN Top 10 hits (tying it with Slim's Thriller for the most all time), one of the most famous anthems ever penned, and an instantly recognizable album cover. We also get a young and very hot Courtney Cox's debuting in one of its videos, its use in multiple presidential campaigns, and its status as the first album to be put on CD in the U.S. Of all the hits the fun and ironic Glory Days remains my favorite -- used to blast it back in my athlete days on the way to the game/match. Now I can blare it for the sea gulls.

Well, I had considered taking a particular album with this pick that I'm worried won't be here when it comes back to me. But after MBF got me for Songs..., I knew that I had to take this one now, or I'd be absolutely sick. Sooo...
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - 1971
One of the most acclaimed albums ever, ranked #6 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, the highest non-rock album on the list, and robbed of the Grammy in 1971 by Simon and Garfunkel (no offense, Proph). The album flows seamlessly from one song to another, with the final track ending up as a callback to the opening track. A highly politically conscious album told from the perspective of a Vietnam War veteran, it is led by the powerful lead track, and also including the hits Mercy Mercy Me and Inner City Blues.

Perhaps, if by "sink a little more" you meant "fell to my pick." Because I don't see any way it would have seen the fourth round...
That was my rationale for taking Thriller over Songs...: I like Songs... way more, but I thought I had a shot at that still being there when the pick came back to me in the second, since I didn't think that anyone other than MBF would even consider it (and damned if she didn't get me anyway!

Rumored to be what Kurt Cobain was listening to before his death and its somber tone inspired Bono from U2 to call it "the best country record never made." My #3 choice was a difficult one to make from a strategy point of view, as I'm neglecting two picks that I'm almost certain won't last until my #4 and #5, but was the very first CD that popped into my head when I started planning:
Stray Cats -- Built for Speed (1982) -- I'll never forget the first time I learned of the Stray Cats; it was 1984-ish, I was about six years old, parked in front of MTV back when they still played videos (videos several years old, no less), and all of a sudden I hear Brian Setzer play the opening notes of "Stray Cat Strut" on that big bad 1959 Gretsch. I was hooked. The rockabilly sound, the mile high pompadours, the cars... I had discovered my personal definition of "cool." Many years later, that definition hasn't changed. This album is just ****ing cool.

Green Day -- Dookie (1994) -- I am imperiling all sorts of extremely important stuff with this pick, and have at least two more that I need to nab in this little snake through my #14/#3 pairing (inded initially this was going to one of the U2 monsters), so I have decided to abuse my moderator powers to give myself a few extra picks this round.
alright, so i've said this two or three times already in this thread about this being on my list. but i'm f'n serious, for some (obviously misguided) reason i didn't think i'd have competition on this one. this album is so nostalgic, brings back soo many memories. as for green day, for me, IMO, this is by faaaar their best work ever. this is seriously one of my favorite albums ever.

I'm not surprised that this has not been taken because i don't think i have the same albums on my list as everyone else.
Not on my list, but I forever heart Madonna for her video to Like A Prayer, and its a damn catchy song too.
I've long thought that Madonna was a special kind of genius. What she was able to do staying atop the pop charts for nearly 20 years while constantly reinventing herself and her music, starting or riding fad after fad, and finding ways to always keep the sound and image fresh for the next generation of kids was bleeping brilliant. It might only be a genius for self promotion, but her music business sense has always been just off the charts.

When I was growing up Mom frequently used to listen to Elvis (especially Moody Blue with the translucent blue LP) and we still tune in to the Elvis channel on Dish Network when she comes over sometimes.
It was recorded at one show (June 10, 1972) and contains many of his top hits.
Hound Dog, Suspicious Minds, All Shook Up, Don't be Cruel, Can't Help Falling in Love - lotta good stuff in there. If I'm going off to an island, I gotta have Elvis the Pelvis playing some music in that rotation. No collection is complete without him.
I can't believe he fell this far in our game.
