i am amazed that london calling and nevermind took that long to go .... which I'm sure says much more about MY tastes than anyone elses. THey probably would've been number one and two for me (with consideration towards what I figured others would pick thrown in).

With my first pick, I selected an album that was originally lower on my list -- not because it wasn't a legitimate favorite, mind you, just because I assumed it would be missing -- which means that we are now at the original start of my list. I find myself in the very uncomfortable position of having to Sophie's Choice my way through several albums to which I am incredibly emotionally attached AND that I fear will probably get snatched up before the picks get back around to me. So, my rather trepidatious second pick is:

Red Hot Chili Peppers -- Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) -- Despite this band's larger commercial success with later albums, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is the pinnacle of their career, as far as I'm concerned. A decidedly unique sound crafted from influences in funk, punk, and rock comes together on this album in songs that are tragic, fun, obscene, heartfelt, and still wonderful to listen to 17 ( ) years later. I'd hate to think of life on a deserted island without this CD.

As an aside: beware the wrath of Mr. Impatient. The thought of receiving an email with pictures of anonymous fat, hairy men in tutus was bad enough, but... sending me a picture of yourself in a tutu? Brick, that was indeed cruel.

Whoohooo!!!! best 90s album?

I am sure than in the future our picks will be very different, GGG but I swear if I didn't know better you somehow accessed my non-existent list (I am kind of picking as I go) and are content to take the very best of em. One of the very first albums I every owned personally. darn you. :p

Best 90's rock album, for sure. At least in my opinion.
WOW...my next pick taken literally right before me!!! ACK! Nevermind, Ten, and BSSM were my next picks in that order....ugh.

Oh well...onward...

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (1993)

Maybe a bit lower on my list, but since Nevermind and Ten have been taken, I couldn't allow this one to get away. Another important "alternative" band of the 90's, this album was very important to me in my freshman year of college. It may not be high on everyone's list, but I love this album and wouldn't have a collection of 20 that didn't include this one.

Wikipedia notes: The album is frequently included in lists of the best albums of the 1990s - the Alternative Press ranked it 4th,[20], Pitchfork Media ranked it 18th, and Spin ranked it 23rd.[3] In 2006, Q magazine readers voted it the 54th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 360 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

I'm quite sure there will be some differences, but you are a (the?) direct threat to one of the albums I've got set aside for one of the next few rounds.

I might as well post my full list now. You guys picked it apart already...

Is it possible that all Kings fans have very similar musical taste?

Do all the Lakers fans have terrible taste (in music as well as everything else)?

It's beginning to look that way...I'd pick any of our lists at this point...

...well, except for a couple of them...:p

Prince - Purple Rain

I'm going to keep this short and to the point: Prince is one of the greatest performers ever, and this is his best album.
I am crushed. That was off the board my next choice. I was sure it was safe till then. Oh well, I had three that I did not think would make it to my 4/5 pick. I'll get my fourth choice now. The other Prince album I would have to have on my island is sure to be safe for rounds to come.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Green Day -- Dookie (1994) -- I am imperiling all sorts of extremely important stuff with this pick, and have at least two more that I need to nab in this little snake through my #14/#3 pairing (inded initially this was going to one of the U2 monsters), so I have decided to abuse my moderator powers to give myself a few extra picks this round. :) But in any case the early/mid-90s are getting worked hard, and so time to step into the arena with another monster from that era -- Green Day's Dookie, which became a flagbearer for the (poppish) punk revival, spawned 5 Top 10, and 3 #1 hits, sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, and has all the normal top all time list/best of accolades of a huge album. The opening chords of When I Come Around are so iconic that even people who have no interest in the style of music know them (if not necessarily knowing where they came from). Followed by Longview, Basket Case, She, Welcome to Paradise...there was a better part of a year there where there was always a Green Day hit on the charts. I know there are other punk bands that you are supposed to take first, but stuck on an island for the rest of my life I'll take the sellouts who can write a pop hook thank you very much.

I humored myself with the notion that Purple Rain could sit on my list as well...I had no belief I'd actually get it, but like Thriller it was there lol...given that I could have grabbed it already, I have no one to blame but me lol so I'm not too upset....yet...it's just forcing me to make a decision between the 5 I have on my short list for my next pick(s). This is sorta nerve-wracking, in a fun sorta way....:)

Gah, I was naive to assume that this would last until the 4th or 5th round for me. Excellent selection, Brick.

You are right. Early-mid 90's stuff is on a nice little run. If I had to take a guess, I'd say a lot of the people in the draft are 25-40 and 90's music played a big role.

Looking at my own personal queue, my next 8 picks are 1990-1997, with 2000 or later not coming into play until my 10th round pick. I wouldn't be shocked if half of them get picked by others before I have the chance to do do.

All Right!

I have a sneaking suspicion that we'll see more from this band:

Metallica - Master of Puppets (1986)

Sure, you could make an argument for many of Metallica's albums being here, but not only was the song "Master of Puppets" covered by Trivium, the entire album was covered by Dream Theater. Oh yeah, Rodrigo and Gabriela do a pretty kick-*** cover of "Orion" as well. It's amazing from beginning to end.

"According to All Music Guide's Steve Huey, Master of Puppets "was the band's greatest achievement". "Some critics have called Master of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded", Huey noted.[4] Master of Puppets has featured on several "greatest albums of all time" lists. In a list dubbed "The All-TIME 100 Albums" and published by TIME magazine in November 2006, the album charted at number thirty-nine.[5] In TIME critic Josh Tyrangiel's opinion, "Metallica didn't bother with hooks or pop discipline" in writing Master of Puppets.[5] Metal Rules rated the album as being number one in a list of the "The Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums" published in September 2003,[6] whereas IGN also rated the album as being at first position in a list of the "Top 25 Metal Albums" issued in January 2007.[7] It is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and Q magazine counted it among the 50 heaviest albums of all time."

Stankonia - Outkast - 2000

What can I say, I could not live on any island without this album. The stylistic infusion of music genres is un-matched to this day in the hip hop arena. The raw power and wittiness of Gasoline Dreams. So Fresh, So Clean, Mrs. Jackson. My favorite is the house influenced Humble Mumble with Erykah Badu. This is hip hop at its best. And it is on my island now.

It is also the first record from this decade picked.

And I will use this wiki quote for my segue...

Stank, a commonly used word on the album, is derived from a southern U.S. pronunciation of stink, the original meaning of the word funk. George Clinton applied the term stank to the more carnal, hedonistic things in life, including funk music. "Stankonia" is the name of a fictional land at "the centre of the earth, seven light years below sea level", which is "the place from which all 'funky thangs' come" according to the album's opening lyrics.

Wow, I'm surprised Metallica lasted until the late second round. I'd have bet money someone would have taken them with a first pick.

BTW Slim, this is a great way to pass the time during TDOS, even for us bystandards. Thanks for stealing the idea from wherever you found it.

I'd like to second the motion for a Desert Island Movie Draft too.

Continuing my metal theme:

Megadeth - Rust in Peace (1990)

Some of you may not be familiar with Megadeth's work, or may simply be intimidated by their name. Fear not, for this is a classic work of metal artistry. Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman at their finest. Lyrically, musically, spiritually, acumenically.
