Defensive Big Man Choices

At this point in his career, any contribution to the the team from Birdman would be negligible at best.

If we're going to go the route of raiding the end of Miami's bench, I'd rather make another pass at Oden than an attempt at a 35-year-old bit player whose best days are far behind him. (Which isn't to say that Oden is much better a choice at this point but if he even makes a couple of steps back towards where he was in 2009, it would be a plus for the team)

looking for starting 4 who is a team defender, not hungry for shots, has decent jumper, is a veteran, and can pass ok. basically, taj gibson and serge ibaka. also interested in a back up center and would love tyson chandler or anderson varejao for the job. i doubt asik would want to play behind cousins.

i liked what i saw of him in summer league a lot, but if we're looking for a starter, horford is really the only choice. getting both would be great though because lucas should be fine off the bench.

Now aside from suddenly having a Lebron/Cp3/Griffin trio team in this division (although again, LeBron and the teams he goes to seem to be ****ing idiots and do not comprehend how to balance things: that's a poorly balanced effort around him AGAIN) the interesting part for us was:

The Clippers could create cap space by trading away DeAndre Jordan and Jamal Crawford, while unloading Jared Dudley by attaching a future first round pick.

DeAndre Jordan is the name there that caught my eye. Either individually, or as part of a three team trade (I was even thinking would OKC part with Ibaka to get a player with bulk inside instead). But it would all key on Rudy opting in or not. if he opts in, then we don't have the cap room to be catching $11mil contracts for anyone, and I doubt the Clippers would want to send him to a division rival unless we could really help them.

Outside of Serge Ibaka, Taj is probably the best fit next to Cousins as a true PF. Has a face us jumper, solid rebounder, very good defender. Would like a better genuine shot blocker but he is a good one nonetheless.

Gibson is better Ibaka he can actually pass the ball and score without being wide open in 100 feet of space and unlike Ibaka when there's a stretch 4 on the floor he will contest and not be made ineffective by it while being able to take advatnage of Matt Bonner on the other end which Ibaka can't do.

But he is nowhere near the rim protector that Ibaka is. Ibaka is the true weakside shot blocker, a defensive anchor. That is one thing Gibson is not really. Certainly not at that level!

The Ibaka of two or three years ago, maybe. But Serge has developed on the offensive end over the past several seasons (even hampered by Scotty Brooks' Stone Age-grade offensive game plan). Hell, this season Ibaka even had a better shooting percentage (both conventional and TS) than Taj this year. Overall, I'd say they're comparable offensively and Ibaka does a fantastic job of shoring up the interior for OKC (see the games he played and didn't play versus San Antonio for evidence).

Aside from blocking shots and hitting wide open jumpers (which is a great combo) he literally has zero talent and could not dominate Matt Bonnar, he's got awful IQ and passing he is a very good specialist Taj Gibson is right now a more complete player. Teams double Gibson while leaving Ibaka wide open.

Even If this is true (it isn't) we want the shot blocker. Not the more complete offensive player. The emphasis of need from our of is shotblocking. The secondary need is hitting open shots. Serge fits this perfectly. Of course, we have zero shot at Ibaka.

Yes Ibaka, is the better shot-blocker, but 1.) he isn't available (like you said) and 2.) Shot-blocking isn't equal to help-defense per se. A defensive play forcing a miss has about the same value as a play blocking the shot. Hence, just because a player doesn't block many shots he's not a poor help-defender.

A team with a paint protector means your wings/guards can play more aggressive to drive opponents off the three point line. It makes scoring off dribble penetration more difficult, meaning help defenders can stay on their man or in passing lanes, leading to turnovers. Rotations are easier because you can essentially play a modified zone defense to keep the rim protector down low.

A team with no paint protector can still play good defense, (think Miami for the three years before this one). However, you have to have plus defenders at every position and preferably size at every position. You also have to have flawless rotations because somebody needs to be constantly trying to block the path into the paint because you can't challenge shots inside.

Having a rim protector gives you a lot of leeway on the athleticism and size of your backcourt. It makes roster building much easier. You can still win without a rim protector, but you need to have superstars to do it.

Yea , the more I thought about it, the asik cousins combo wasn't all that great. Neither of them are mobile enough to guard those quicker 4's. And Asik really wouldn't space the floor that well

It is such an obviously great fit those two. Even at the start of last seasons of the Asik for Anderson swap now they got their man for a lot smaller price. That team, if it can stay healthy is such a good young, up and coming team. Davis' job got a whole lot easier too! Those guys is NO are making some moves I wish we would make!

Though to be fair, they'll probably still find ways to be bad with Monty Williams as their coach.

I knw its better to have a rim protector. But with the rules these days going straight up can be justas effective.
