Former Piston Williams to retire

Former NCAA and NBA champion Corliss Williamson will announce his retirement from the NBA during a 1:30 p.m. press conference at the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in Little Rock on Wednesday.

Williamson, 33, played for the Pistons from 2000-2004. In the 2001-02 season, he was named the NBA’s Sixth Man and eventually was a member of the Pistons’ 2003-04 NBA Championship team. His nickname was "Big Nasty."

At Arkansas, WIlliamson was named Most Valuable Player of the 1994 NCAA Final Four, leading Arkansas to the national championship.

He was selected by the Sacramento Kings as a 13th overall pick in the first round of the 1995 NBA Draft. His best career year was in the 1997-98 season when he played 79 games and averaged 17.7 points per game for the Kings.

During his 14-year NBA career, WIlliamson played in 822 games, averaging 22 minutes of action. He averaged 49% shooting from the floor, and 13.6% from beyond the 3-point line.

I'm glad he began and ended his career with us. Too bad that championship had to come from somewhere else though. Best of luck to Corliss. Thanks.

FINALLY! We get to have a retirement ceremony for someone we loved who actually played his final games in the uniform of the Sacramento Kings!

I wish him all the very, very best!

That wasn't supposed to be the plan at the end of the year -- he was talking about another 3 years. Was noticing that he was one of the last veteran SF types yet to be signed. Wonder if that's because his heart wasn't really into it? Or wonder if his heart not really being into it came from a lack of interest, especially from the elite/title teams for whihc he was aiming. FA money this year really dried up, might have only been getting vet min offers as well.

I'll second that.

Thank you Corliss. Best of luck to you in whatever you now choose to do.

Same here. Still would have liked to see his mug on our bench this year without a couple of other forwards ahead of him, though.

Hmmm, maybe time to get another King on the current roster with the same class, dedication, and fan appreciation as Corliss - pictured at the top of the Forum. Kevin Martin gets my vote.

Man, Corliss brought me many good memories from his time as a King. I think one of my fondest was when he got in a shoving match with Derrick Coleman in his rookie year...that was the ole' WCW Corliss.:D

Thanks to one of the classiest guys ever to lace em' up in the NBA! We'll miss you Corliss!

THANKS Corliss.

I'll never forget the night I saw Corliss drop 40 against the Utah Jazz @ Arco, during his first Kings stint.

And what a classy guy. Best of luck to him.

I wonder if he will take a shot as an assistant coach at some point.

Since he's announcing his retirement back home in Arkansas, I have to wonder if a slot on the end of the Razorback bench is part of his future. (And I mean the good end of the bench, where they all wear suits...)

Heck, even Corliss as head coach of the Razorbacks might be in the cards at some point considering how much turmoil that program has had recently (see below). Perhaps 'Big Nasty' could follow a path similar to Reggie Theus - although Reg really did it the hard way. He started out as a volunteer assistant at state college, AAU coach, and Assistant at Louisville before his elevation to head coach at NMSU.

From Wikipeda:

University of Arkansas Men's Basketball

Main article: Arkansas Razorbacks basketball
The men's basketball team head coach is John Pelphrey (previously at South Alabama). Dana Altman was hired on April 2, 2007 for the head coaching job but decided to return back to Creighton University the following day. [1] Altman would have replaced Stan Heath who was fired on March 26, 2007. The Razorbacks play their home games in Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus. The team won the 1994 National Championship under coach Nolan Richardson, who was later dismissed by the University following a steady decline in the program and a 14-15 season. Richardson claimed publicly and in court proceedings to have been racially discriminated against. A federal judge in Little Rock, as well as the US Court of Appeals in St. Louis, sided with the U of A.
The school has been to six Final Fours (1941, 1945, 1978, 1990, 1994, 1995) and was named as the eighth-best program in history by Street and Smith's magazine.

The stabilizer for our team last year. Even reading Brick's grades, I believe he almost always got Bs, with a spattering of A's for good effort scoring, hustling and such--in other words, really consistent, completely unlike the rest of the team. Whereas Salmons often disappeared into C territory and Bibby's erratic shooting led his grades all over the place, Corliss was someone you could always depend on.

Even the stats indicate--at 33ish, Corliss could've given up producing numbers and much like the prior year (9.8 mpg) stay at the end of the bench, but instead he played his way to more playing time and even became our part time center. 9.1 ppg in 19.7 minutes, on 51% shooting, is extremely efficient and productive offensively--typical Corliss numbers, actually, per 48 minutes--given his always efficient scoring career.

I shall miss Corliss even more than when he left us the first time. Corliss, I wish you well as you begin a new career in coaching. God speed!!

Corliss had a good career and now its time for quits. IMO he did a good job in Sac and he got what every player wants, a championship ring. Best of luck with your future Corliss!

....AND a career 13% shooter from the three point line to boot!! :D

(why did they put that little stat in the article, he probably shot a grand total of 15 threes his whole career!)

Corliss to retire

I have had the awesome privilege of personally meeting and actualy having a conversation with many of the Kings team members. Corliss has to rank as one of the top contenders for the nicest and best role model. Thanks Corliss!! You are a class act and will be missed.;)

Best Wishes and Thanks for the Memories.

Corliss. Best Wishes and thanks for the memories. Loved your game in all your Kings years. All the best in your new coaching venture. You'll do great.

As expected, forward Corliss Williamson retired from the Sacramento Kings after 12 seasons in the NBA -- and was introduced as an assistant coach at Arkansas Baptist College.

Williamson, 33, was drafted by Sacramento in 1995. He averaged 11.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in a career that included stops in Toronto, Detroit and Philadelphia.

He won the league's sixth man award for Detroit in 2002 and was on the Pistons' 2004 NBA championship team.
