excellent move, shores up the point and allows for a young talent to grow even more before our very eyes. If nothing else, he's a tradable asset near the deadline.

I love it. Beno is solid at the point and still improving, martin is great, hopefully we can get something good for ron at the sf or have garcis start, hopefully Thompson will be good, and I think Hawes is going to be just fine. That my friends could be the making of a nice young and up n coming team. Hopefully ad a star in 2010 and bang! Do we have all the amazing young stars portland has? NO but we also don't know how all those young players in portland will play together or if any will be busts.

I attend 3-4 Kings games every year (ironically, I went to easily twice or even three times as many in those lost years 1985-97 - when about only good thing to say was seat, parking, concessions, was a helluva lot cheaper). I would hate to go into this upcoming season with a mediocre at best PG-by-committee or some scrub FA in place of SOLID Beno Udrih (I didn't say instant All-Star GREAT). I pay my now around $90 a ticket expecting only a couple things - all out Kings effort plus best possible talent assembled by management and our coach to hopefully produce a bunch of wins on that THUNDEROUS (goose pimple special nights!) Arco Arena home court. If we were stumbling into next season with our PG slot as pathetic as it was for awhile last year, this might have been first time I ever just sat at home and just watched mostly disinterested on TV for a whole season - never venturing near Arco. Let the good time ROLL in 2008-09 with Beno and everyone striving to work together to get better and better. A bit of homer time... GO KINGS!!

And that was one of my concerns about the PG position - if you put in a cheap scrub who can't run the team effectively, you run the risk of looking even cheaper than some have accused you of being and turning away even more fans at the gate.

question: how would fans of the team take it if management came straight out and basically said "look, we would like to look into our team's success a little more in the long term. so to that end, we are going to aggressively manage our cap space and not do moves that may be ok in the short term, but will hurt our cap space in the long term. our intent is to be significantly under the cap for 20xx, where we can have an impact on the free agent market."

do you think fans will turn away in the short term if management were to say something like that?

I don't know, but I doubt a team would come out and state that. Given a firm direction by higher ups, maybe that would fly.

well, we're about to get a chance to see for the next two years...cuz that's certainly the tact that the nets are taking.

Yes, there is a whole contingent of fans who don't care about cap space, don't follow the team year round and maybe even buy tickets (ignorantly), expecting a winning product all the time. These people would be put off by such news and just go watch sports center or follow football until we are better. I have a (former) season ticket holder in my family who gave them up just because they weren't guaranteed a winning product at least 50% of the time. They're called fair weather fans.

Best option we probably had available... all other "young stud" PG's are already locked down...

Beno is cheap... and if need be will be easy to move/trade... great signing!

Agreed. I believe things turned out well for both the Kings and Beno. He will only continue to get better. How much? That has yet to be seen, but for the price he was the best available option for us at this time.

I like it

Good move, I say. Yes, there are better point guards in the world. And before someone says it, I probably would have preferred to sign him for less time. But given the choice between this and rolling the dice on a scrub, this is the smarter move.

Or to put it another way...we got lucky when HE turned out to be pretty good. Would it be smart to let the "lucky break" walk and hope to get lucky again? Not to me.

I think what fans would do is take a sabatical. It would be no skin off their nose. Let the team stink for a couple of years and give me a heads up when your competive again so I can start watching again.

My daughter was one of the most fanatical Kings fans you would ever want to meet. We drove all over La Paz one night trying to find some place that was showing NBA TV just so she wouldn't miss a game.

Last year, she didn't even turn on the TV when the game was on when I was visiting. She's lost interest. All her favorite players are gone and they're not winning. They're not exciting like they used to be.

I think this is one of the problems the Kings are faced with. How do you rebuild a team back to its glory days, and keep people in the seats at the same time. Now I live in Mexico, so I could care less how many people are at the game. But to be sure, the Maloff's care. It is a business and it has to make money. If it doesn't, we could be having discussions about the Rivercats in five years. Its easy to criticize their reluctance to bite the bullet, but I do understand it.

I'm happy with the move. When you think what the alternatives were, I think it turned out for the best.

The thing I'm happiest about is that it didn't drag out all summer, like the Bonzi thing did. Its done and over with. Now maybe Petrie can move on to some other important moves. Please!

I hereby officially certify the overwhelming winner - YES - even as some votes continue to trickle in from distant parts. No recount necessary;)
