Chris Kaman

Do you think that the Kings would show any interest in acquiring Chris Kaman this season? It looks like he's on the trading block. He would be a nice 3rd big to build around next to Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes, and he's only 26 years old. I like his rebounding, and his post presence. Maybe John and Mikki for Kaman, though there are other possibilities for a trade?

Kings Out

John Salmons
Mikki Moore

Kings In

Chris Kaman

Clippers Out

Chris Kaman

Clippers In

John Salmons
Mikki Moore

Why the Kings do this: Improve post play, and rebounding with a fringe all-star coming into his prime. Would be a nice post presence to play with Spencer and Thompson, while opening up minutes for Dante at the 3 and Jason at the 4 spot. When the contracts of Brad Miller and #9 expire, the Kings frontcourt would be set with Hawes/Thompson/Kaman.

Why the Kings don't do this: Kaman's defense isn't spectacular, and John has been playing out of his mind this year. Kaman is also under contract through 2011, giving us less flexibility there. (My take would be the lineup would be basically set, and we would only be shopping for a PG at that time.

Why the clippers do this: Moves Camby to his natural position at C, and brings in a beast scorer to replace Magette, whom they have missed more than they thought they would. Gets rid of a large conract, to speed up their rebuild.

Why the Clippers don't do this: Mikki Moore and Tim Thomas as PFs?

Kings New Lineup

PG Beno Udrich/Bobby Jackson/Bobby Brown
SG Kevin Martin/Francico Garcia/Quincy Douby/Bobby Brown
SF Francisco Garcia/Dante Greene
PF Jason Thompson/Spencer Hawes/Sheldon Williams
C Brad Miller/Chris Kaman/Spencer Hawes

Any thoughts?

First, I don't believe he's on block. There was one rumor about Charlotte inquiring about him and then that resulted in a flurry of calls from half the teams in the league, and my understanding is that the Clippers told them all they aren't interested in moving him.

Second, if they were going to move him, they'd ask for a LOT in return. Way more than you are proposing here. He's one of the league's best centers and is just entering his prime. There's no way on earth they're looking to clear out mid-20's Kaman to make room for mid-30's Camby.

Not to mention that we are in the same division and conference. This deal has no chance anyway but when you add in that little factoid....well you know the rest.

This was the first deal off the top of my head that worked salary-wise. The first premise of the OP was whether the triple headed monster in the frontcourt of Hawes/Thompson/Kaman would be a finished product to build the rest of the team around.

Other combinations, if the clippers needed more for Kaman, would be very realistic. This was the first one that I found that worked so I rolled with it. Any other ideas? Would Kaman be a good fit for the Kings down the road alongside our youth?

Even IF Kaman was available, he's a very solid center who is on the right side of 30. He won't be given up for a couple of mid level veterans, not happening. Anything we'd have to give up for him would be rebuilding pieces that we'd want to keep.

Well, to answer the first question, yes, I would love to have Kaman. Who wouldn't? Its that second part that gets tricky. What do you have to give up in order to get him. In a perfect world, I would think that Miller would have to be a part of the deal. Otherwise there just isn't enough playing time to go around.

Do we really want to pair up Brad Miller, Chris Kaman and Spencer Hawes?

Look, I know Kaman's a fringe all star in the making, but I can see Hawes as almost a carbon-copy clone of him--down to the potential rebounding and shotblocking abilities, as well as shooting touch. Kaman's more of a bruiser and even looks the part at times, but this shouldn't even be in our list of priorities--I'd prefer Spencer to develop rather than to make a trade like this. If we want another center, I'd want a super athletic shotblocking intimidator--I personally don't prefer more finesse (I know Kaman isn't finesse, but he isn't Keon Clark either).

John Salmons is really jacking up his trade value as of now, admittedly, and perhaps now would be a good time to trade him considering that once Martin and Garcia get back, his stats would inevitably dwindle. But not this sort of trade. I'd really hope we'd get a youth player and a future 1st rounder or even two first rounders out of him considering he's making a run at MIP (arguably) right now.

This trade would be to keep Kaman for the long haul. 26 is still young in the NBA and he would be in his prime when the Kings return to relevance. Brad Miller would have expired by then too, so he would fill some of the void, but as a younger version with a better post presence. If we could throw in Brad to the trade, I would do that...
