Being "agressive" by making big moves right out of the gate is a luxury of the underperforming team with cap space... in short teams with nothing to loose. Yes the top prospects usualy go early but usually for grossly over inflated contracts that come back to haunt the team down the road. These off season threads would be very interesting to revist 4 and 5 years down the pike. Does anyone really want to see the Kings saddled with Ben Wallaces contract in 3 years? Bottom line is that the Bulls and Hornets earned the right to scoop up over priced FA by sucking horribly for years.
The reality, as boreing as it may be, is that for a team that is perenially performing well (making the play offs) and have landed top players in the past few years the smart thing to do is be PATIENT. No great deals are being made right now, just final contracts for guys at or beyond their peek most of which are grossly inflated. The patient GMs will land a few good role players cheap in a few weeks and more importantly the teams that stocked up will orobably be trading quality pices for nich players and expiring contracts in a few weeks as well. Just one recnt example is Petrie scooping up SAR for the MLE LATE last off season.
It would be interesting to look at a list of FA contracts and when they were brokered... I think it would likely teach a valuble lesson aobut keeping your powder dry.
