Breaking: Reggie Theus Fired

how much of thibodeau's success do you guys think is actually him, and how much the personnel he's had (i think he was in houston before boston, right?)??

You could say this about any Coach. Alot depends on the players you have.

I'm just wondering when Petrie is actually going to start taking some heat for this abysmall roster he has put together and these horrible trades he has made in the last few years. Can't keep blaming the Coach when the GM still thinks the NBA is played below the rim and has an aversion to drafting/signing or trading for actual athletes.

Is it just me, or is the Kings ongoing coaching situation beginning to resemble the Raiders.....

Nothing is bad as the Raiders. I just don't understand why the hell they didn't resign Adelman. We had everything you could want in a coach in Rick and they let him go and hired Eric Mussleman?? Eric freaking Mussleman.

Crazy.

If I were an NBA coach, I would never consider applying for this position at this time. As I have pointed out all year, the expectations of winning and developing young players are mutually exclusive. I thought Reggie was on the right track by developing the youth at the expense of wins. I was OK with that. What probably got him canned was the way they lost at times. Good luck Coach Natt.

No, just a standard bad team searching for direction. People are acting like this is some amazing unprecedented move, but I'm assuming that's just people who only pay attention to Sacto. I'd say somewhere around 10-20% of the coaches in the league get fired every year, many of them in midseason in exactly the sorts of circumstances we find ourselves. Nothing revolutionary about it -- far less surprising than it is for teams with coaches who had them in the playoffs last year and looked moderately secure (Mitchell, Jordan, Cheeks). Or our own Adelman move.

So we tossed the long time coach -- still stupid -- and now have burned two throwaways through the world's longest and slowest descent into rebuild. That's semi-par for the course. But it really is about time to make a move for the one that sticks. Call this year, or maybe next, the nadir. Add another lotteyr pick or two, one or more FAs, and get a coach who can guide them back on the upswing and survive long enoguh for them to at least reach the playoffs again.

Rick Barry anyone? I heard he's dying for a shot at a coaching gig.

If nothing else, we could laugh at all of our players shooting granny style free throws as they all mysteriously make it in the basket.

Now that Reggie and Chuck are out of the way, maybe the Maloofs will open up the assistant coaching chair to Whisenant. I'm sure Natt won't put up a fight.:p

I haven't been around here in a long time, but I've been watching the games.

The team I watched play the Lakers last week and win was an entirely different team. It's frustrating when you see they can play like that when they want to, and then come out against crappy teams and just stand around watching.

It drives me INSANE!

So Reggie is gone. I'm hoping that he's somewhat responsible for that "we don't care" attitude, but I doubt it.

As for someone hoping that the Maloofs want the Kings to lose more... seriously. I can't see that at all. The Maloofs go crazy happy when we win and just crazy when we lose. They're not about a draft pick.

ha! that is what i was thinking. I mean what did they expect from this team. if you compare our guys to elite teams in the league, we might have one guy that would even be in the rotation. I mean how many people had even heard of mikki moore before he came here. then he is starting for us! Maybe we should take a look at whoever assembled this team. or just wait to see how our young talent works out. I dont think that a change of systems is going to help these guys mature.

Mo Cheeks was fired Saturday and today Reggie Theus making it 6 NBA head coaches fired so far this season - barely a quarter the way into it. Philadelphia was plunging horribly in attendance, near the bottom (just like the Kings) and THAT may be as much to do with the coaching turmoil as personnel, performance, personality, losing games.

Next to get the ax? Terry Porter? Don Nelson (or just shuffled upstairs)? Mike Dunleavy, Sr., (firing himself but remaining GM)? Scott Brooks (must win a game or two so not to start looking like 1962 NY Mets)?

I liked him at first but he's a rookie coach and made a lot of rookie mistakes during his stretch with us. So no more rookie coaches here please Maloofs!
I wonder how good Larry Brown would have been with us...

Larry Brown would have "retired" by now....And don't the Kings have 30 assistant coaches on staff already, why on earth would they need Whiz? He can't fix the deficiencies on this roster and won't get the job next year when they hire for a full-time coach.

I think the reason for letting him go has more to do with behind the scenes issues. Having Natt coach will keep some consistency with the players in terms of style, but we are not going to be a good team this year regardless of who is coaching. However, Theus has always struck me as very stubborn and has even called out the management to the press in the past (regarding having his types of players). My guess is that he was butting heads with management, wasn't playing the players he should have been, etc. As long as Natt spends more time developing the young players and doesn't stop the linning this move should work out just fine.

Of much bigger concern is what coach do we pick up in the offseason.

Napear said on the radio that one of the biggest problems was that Reggie gave too much control and responsibility to Chuck Person and that Chuck Person is not the kind of guy who is known for being a responsible, follow thru kind of guy. He said the players liked Reggie but he also said that to a man the players had real problems with Chuck Person.

Ah...so now its all Chuck's fault? Wonder how he ever got a rep as a guy who might one day be a head coach?

Got to love Napear -- always finds somebody to slime on the way out the door once they can't fight back.

The thought of Mikki Moore getting the tight look of concentration as he prepares for the granny, then the flex as it goes in. omg hilarious!

What the hell? I am being very serious about Petrie wanting to leave. I don't trust Petrie as far as I can throw him was my earlier point. Honestly, I endorse Isiah Thomas today, and I want to know who is with me!

Now thats funny! Isiah Thomas! Dude your are a funny guy. :D:D:D

The firing of Reggie is not complicated. The Kings were, what? 6 and 18? There was no rhyme or reason to his rotations. The team was attaining no idenity under his rule. But more than anything else. If you can step outside the box and look from afar. Everything was about him. Reggie was the star, win or lose. It was him in the spotlight and now in the limelight.

The truth is, he just wasn't a very good coach, and unless Reggie can step outside the shadow of his own ego, he never will be. Look around the league and you'll see that most of the coaches are ex-players. If you look closely, you'll notice that almost none of them were stars in the NBA. Most of them were journeymen players like Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. Players that had to work hard to acheive. That understand work ethic and dedication is important.

My point is, that it didn't come easy for them, and they know how to communicate that to young players. I don't think Reggie knew how to do that, because it came easy for him. In a strange way, his blessing as a player, is his curse as a coach.
