Breaking news...Adelman era over (merged)

Someone (sorry) asked if Avery Johnson had been an assistant in SA. No, but as you can see from Dallas' performance this season, he played there long enough to pick up Popovich's defensive preferences and tendencies.

Mark Cuban/Nellie brought AJ in as a FA player/coach, the next season he was strictly an assistant, and later that year Cuban elevated AJ to head when Nellie was retired.

Cleveland has ex-Spur Danny Ferry in the front office as GM, Lance Blanks as AGM, and former assistant (pre Indiana days) Mike Brown as coach. Ferry was in the Spurs front office as director of player personnel or something like that after finishing his playing career; Blanks was just in the front office.

Given RA's contract status all season speculation has been that he'll retire and return to the Portland area. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see him coaching the Blazers if not next year then perhaps the year after that given the potential ownership change happening there.
Rick will not have a problem finding another job. He has proven he knows how to win.

I will scream if Doug Collins comes to the Kings. He is a horrible coach and it is exemplified in his horrid announcing. The only reason he got his last job is because he was Jordan's puppet and he would allow Jordan to try to relive his glory days at the expense of the Wizards franchise.

As I've stated a number of times this season, I think this is the right call. Not that there isn't potential for it to backfire, but I believe a change needed to be made.

Adleman's strength is his ability to relate to players, which was a much needed skill with the cast of characters they have had over the years. In fact it's still needed. The problem is that what the Kings need more than that is not what Adelman brings to the table.

1. The Kings offense existed becuase they had the players to run the Princeton offense. There isn't a lot of in-game coaching with that offense so Rick's X's and O's deficiencies weren't exposed. This team is not built for that kind of game and it shows. It's not simply an issue of not having played together as there is no real offensive scheme on the court. And Rick has never been great at subsitution patterns or taking advantage of mismatches. I don't know how many times in the past 8 years that I've screamed at the tv when Adelman adjusts based on what other coaches do. The other team goes small and Adelman won't pound the ball outside but instead goes small as well. The other team is killing you on a pick and roll and he leaves Vlade in to stumble around the court. Very frustrating.

2. This is a defensive minded team and they would benefit from a defensive minded coach. People can say all they want about the Kings teams in the past that put up better defensive team stats, but I think its fairly common knowledge that this has never been a defensive team and Rick has never been a defensive coach. It's not a criticism as most coaches in the league sway in one direction or the other. But when you have a team that isn't really suited to a coaches style on either end of the court, there's going to be problems.

3. Finally, they need a coach with a killer mentality. I believe Adelman is a nice guy and while that helps in the locker room it can hurt on the court. If you don't believe that, look at how frequently the Kings lose close games, don't show up for big games, let go of large leads, and generally operate as though they are trying to avoid losing rather than going for the jugular. They've got the players (mostly), I think it's worth trying to find the coach.

Jeebus. I'm not liking this. It sounds like a funeral. Petrie looks miserable and is mumbling the whole way through, I sure hope he's not next.

....wow...petrie is stumbling through this...he looks nervous or something...i dont like how this is panning out
I'm guessing it's the big red target on his back that is making him nervous. ALL HIS people are gone who do you THINK is next?

Sounds like Adelman talked to Petrie and the Maloofs talked to Petrie, but they never met. Reading into Petrie's comments, Adelman didn't want to come back and the Maloofs didn't want him back.

They want a coach sooner rather than later because of summer league, the draft, trades, etc.

I have a feeling that not only have they(Maloofs) decided on a coach, they also have decided on NOT re-signing Bonzi, too. I think that they are taking the 'cheap' route and handing over the SG position to Martin, but THAT will play out in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned for a VERY interesting offseason...
One thing, anytime ther were approached with an Adelman question they were ALWAYS evasive. In regards to Bonzi they have already talked to his agent about bringing him back.
