Once I heard Burkle yesterday, I was wondering the same thing...and looks like it's being confirmed now. What I'm wondering is...if the Maloofs don't want to sell, will Burkle have any dealings after that point in this whole thing? Will it be ICON or bust...or is Burkle/C-Webb involved in JUST getting a new arena/complex if the Maloofs are still owners? How will THAT work? I know they pretty much gave Ron the finger today, but might there be the chance of a partnership/co-ownership group with the 2 sides? Especially if the Maloofs are deemed to be losing money at a rapid rate?

This is part that a few here dont understand. Burkle would be part of the ownership group. He would not be the person in charge. That would be someone else either Darius Anderson or maybe C-Webb. They have already confirmed Bob Cook is on board if a new team is brought in I bet the rest of the sacramento minority owners would be in as well.

THIS WOULD BE A LOCAL OWNERSHIP GROUP !!!!

While I mostly agree there is an important distinction between owning a franchise and owning a unique business enterprise. And it can be argued that the Maloofs aren't operating in the best interest of the parent entity. Either way I don't think the NBA can force them to do anything but they can make it very uncomfortable to be loose cannons and move the team out of personal interests rather than those in the interest of the league.

But the real question is if Burkle is coming in guaranteeing the money to get the arena done? Public funding will be required, but if he says he will cover any shortfall and we'll break ground in August before the start of the season then BOOM. Kings stay.

Let me preface this by saying that I understand both sides of the argument. I really do....

But the Maloofs are handling this like spoiled children. I appreciate their motives, but there is a better way to handle yourselves, and some of the things that have come out of their mouths over the last few days have been completely out of line. That is not how professional businessmen should act. I understand them being passionate, however, they are the face of a business and need to act accordingly.

Did the Maloofs think we were just going to bend over and take it without a fight? Could they have been that stupid? Is this the lack of an ability to forecast and strategically plan that has run their other businesses into the ground?

I love seeing them rattled. LOVE IT. Made my day. Absolutely made my day.

I'll repost this from Burkle's group because there is no mention that they want to buy the team. It's a general, "we can help" kind of message.

I am saying that other news people and fans are misrepresenting this. Of course it pissed off the Maloofs to hear that a billionaire wanted to waltz in and buy their team. Too bad it wasn't true.

Also, the irony of a Maloof getting upset over someone dropping a bombshell at the last minute is too much. I guess they don't like the taste of their own medicine. Hypocrites.

Correct. If they Maloofs are willing to sell then Burkle will be part of the local ownership group.

Why the Maloofs seem so upset about the introduction of Burkle into the fray is because the attention has been turned from the rest of the league voting to help a fellow owner make money into a vote of whether or not the Maloofs are competent owners in the present NBA.

While it has been documented that 22 of the 30 teams are losing money, you don't see 22 owners loking to sell their teams to get out of a losing investment. In the big picture most of these owners who are losing money see this as a bad time that will pass, and that the value of the franchise will continue to appreciate making owning a team a good investment in the long run even if it is costing money now and for the next few years. Most owners in the league have other income sources or at least a nest egg that will help them absorb the costs right now in search of future growth. The Maloofs are on the bubble as whether they are in that same situation financially.

With the reported loss of the Palms and the sale of the beer distrubution, the Kings are the Maloofs main remaining source of revenue. With that being the case, the other owners are going to have to decide if they are looking to move to Anaheim to become Donald Sterling part two, basically not spending money on the product and reaping the benefits of a large market. If this were to happen, I'm sure the majority of owners would view this as bad for the league overall, much like Sterling is viewed.

Prior to the announcement of the new buyer waiting in the wings, owners may have been in fear of the Kings turning into another New Orleans like situation, where the league was forced to buy a team to protect the league as a whole. With this uncertanty in there minds, many of the owners may have voted yes on relocation. Now these same owners have a different decision to make. Now a no vote may be looked at as effectively forcing the Maloofs to sell out to an owner with considerably more financial resources, which in the long run will benefit the league as a whole.

Basically the way I see it is the KJ's presentation changed the argument completely, and the owners are now inthe position to make a huge point here, saying that they aren't going to comprimise the integrity of the league as a whole because of one of the owners questionable business decisions on things unrelated to the NBA, and if the Maloofs can't make it work in a small market, instead of giving up on small markets as a whole and settign the precedent for them to move into the larger markets territories, that they now have another guy out there who is willing to make it work.

Stern seems to be still hung up on the arena deal, but it is becoming more and more apparent that public financing for arenas is becoming a thing of the past. It didn't happen for Seattle and most likely won't happen for Sacramento, so hopefully a majority of the owners are realizing that the best thing for the league as a whole is to put in owners who have the financial ability to make it happen on their own.

I can't back read all the events going on.. too much, but from the start I read that Maloofs won't sell still and are upset at the idea, They really weren't prepared for it

The league's best route would be to force the maloofs to sell, if they do move to anaheim its only on borrowed time till the maloofs financial woes continue. The league should realize that HERE is an owner (according to forbes) that has even deeper pockets than local billionaire Mark Cuban. and it will bring in more money than than giving out to the maloofs. didnt the league some time this year give them a relief loan or something?
 
I believe public ownership outside of a minority partner is not allowed in the NBA charter.
 
what Crandell just proposed is completely unrelated to burkle, ICon, and everything KJ talked about....its off the wall and has nothing to do with anything thats been happening...wtf.

Oh, well that would probably work. And with the Maloofs showing their hand with the Anaheim deal that they are willing to be tenants and not hold the full operations contract with their new arena it might even be a sound investment.

Wow, even Shinn didn't stoop that low. When he left Charlotte for New Orleans, he wound up on the expansion committee and vouched for Charlotte getting a new team. He acknowledged that he was no longer a good fit for the community but that a new ownership group could make things work.

Now the other shoe has come within inches of dropping, and only a stellar move by a maligned mayor has stopped it. Everybody is suddenly awake and fighting, which is great news, but so long overdue. But if you can't look in the mirror and realize how you got here, and realize that it can and will happen again if the city conducts itself the same way it has for the last dozen years, then you will lose them anyway. Look in the damn mirror. Beat this effort by the Maloofs back, but then look in the damn mirror. This is a great save, but after its done Sac is going to have to shape up and go to work to consolidate it.

Sacramento seriously needs to become more proactive instead of reactive. They wouldn't be in this mess if they would change their ways.

Yup, and this is what put me into "what have you done for me now" mode. I was a Maloof sympathizer. I have changed my tune.
