Bernard James or Cole Aldrich?

There was some Aldrich news yesterday.
Is there a more intentionally obnoxious type of post which can be made aside from what you posted here, then not follow up on it?

Can't think of a single poster who's been here as long as you and doesn't understand how to link or explain whatever info it is they're trying to pass on.

Cut it out guys.

I am clearly the most obnoxious poster on this site, and I won't have that title challenged just because you two want to hurl veiled insults. :p

The Sacramento Kings, looking to fill the 15th roster spot with a backup center, could bring back a player who finished last season with the team. According to Jonathan Santiago and James Ham of Cowbell Kingdom, the team put Cole Aldrich through a workout on Monday. Aldrich was not in their plans this offseason, but late in the game the team still needs to find a backup center behind DeMarcus Cousins and that's why they turned to him. The New York Knicks also have interest in Alrdich.

Hasn't been mentioned around here. What did he say? Are you Sacto local now to have heard it?

I did move back (might be time to update the profile here) but missed the show. Only really listening to radio on the car these days, and after the bar exam I'm enjoying not having anywhere to go for a couple weeks ;).

Did check it out this morning, though. Some rough notes:

When asked about front office's checkbook: says ownership is "committed" but you have to be careful. Acknowledges competing in the league is about talent, since there are only 5 guys on the court at at time, etc.

Vision for summer: strong run at really great player early, but knew there was limit as to how far could go. Want to get "guys other teams don't want to play against."

On keeping DMC: we're in talks, excited about the talks, leave it at that as negotiations are going on.

What can fans expect: would love to say would make playoffs, etc, but will promise hardest working team in NBA. He's in a competition with Malone to be first in office every day. Hard work ethic starting from top down.

Wouldn't comment on specifics of Iguodala deal. Was never situation where it was "weird" like hypothesized in media. Can't clarify details.

Wanted to know why there's Warriors tab/link on the 1140 website.

On Mullin: emphasized their existing friendship, no formal announcement, but seemed to hint that there is a relationship [pretty clear there is one].

Where going to watch games: not like Petrie in the tunnel (because he's too short!). Hasn't decided yet (suggested on Dave's shoulders).

We had plenty of opportunity to pick up a shot-blocker in the draft. The Jazz got Rudy Gobert for a song. Assuming he stays healthy, that kid is going to be a steal. Whithey has looked pretty good too. Hindsight, and all that.

Absent some other option for a rim protector, I would go with Aldrich. He played hard with us last year in limited minutes. I view him as an Ostertag-lite, with all of the good and bad that comes with that. In the right system, he can be a useful piece to play off the bench with guys like Landry or Patterson.

Like Bajaden said above, there just aren't many excellent rim protectors out there. You get past Howard/Ibaka/Sanders/Chandler, and there is a steep drop off to the Deandre Jordans and Javale McGees of the league who block shots, but suck at defense and rebounding, and the guys like Cousins who rebound well, but don't block shots or defend. Aldrich is as close as the team has come to a rebounding rim protector since Dalembert.

The media annoyed Vivek with that at Malone's press conference too. They don't seem to get that the players come first before the checks. There has to be players to spend the money on in the first place. You don't walk into a summer and say I'm spending xyz, the players who you have and/are able to get dictate what is spent (in relation to how much more you can win/market per what is spent). I know they are bugging the new regime with that question out of reflex due to the Magoofs but let them acquaint themselves with the city and running the franchise.

I was reminded by a friend today of a quote by Keith Smart when interviewed on Cowbell Kingdom. He was asked about the roles of individual players, and he responded by saying something like, I don't know what a role player is. I won't belabor you with the rest of his explanation. When you look at last years team, you had players like James Johnson, who should have been nothing more than a role player, playing as though he was the 2nd or 3rd option on the team. You had other players that probably would have been willing role players, that were never given a role.

I know there hasn't been anything, that most would consider major moves, made to improve the roster. But what they have done, is bring in players that know their role. That alone should help improve the overall play of the team. In that regard, I think Aldrich would be a decent addition. However, I doubt that Aldrich, or anyone else will be signed until training camp, barring a major gift falling into their laps. Its my guess that the Kings will invite players from summer league that got their attention. And I'm not just talking about the players on the Kings summer league team. Whereas I spent a lot of time watching 4 to 5 games a day, I saw Kings officials at many of those same games. Personally, I'd like to use that 15th roster spot on a young player that I could sign, and then develop for a year in the D-League. I would prefer a big man that can block some shots. If there are any out there.

I like a lot of the stuff he said and you can see the culture is changing, which can only be a very positive thing. The only bummer, and its the biggest one to me, was the statement around understanding you only have 5 guys on the court and the need for talent. I feel like we took a Petrie-esque approach and added more redundant depth while letting the second best talent walk. Also, with the notable exception of Luc we got worse on d and it would be nice to hear PDA mention that side of the ball more.
