[Belated] Doug Christie Named Head Coach

I remain among those who are not among Christie's biggest boosters. I don't love how "in-house" it all feels, especially since the Kings' house has been so disordered for so long. However, under the circumstances, it's a fine enough hire. We don't even know what the team will look like once next season starts, and Christie appears to have earned some goodwill with whatever players will remain on the roster. I imagine Perry is thinking of it as a "prove it" deal of sorts, and hopefully Doug gets an opportunity to fill out his staff in a complementary manner.

I am not one who believes that the interim tag on Christie's job was what was holding the team back.

The big question for me is how many of Brown's assistants stay on; and I wonder if Doug has the influence it takes to hire capable assistants.

Too funny. So Mike Brown’s practices were too hard and Doug Christie didn’t practice enough? Sounds like DC was just trying to appease his players based on what Domas was saying about Brown. Really need a roster reset.
Sounds a bit crazy on paper but it can be tough to judge these things without full context. For example, maybe Domas thought more practice was needed in this particular case because of all the new players we had who had to learn the system.

I'm going to be the first to come back after The KF Blip and state that I don't know if DC was the best coach available or if he will be successful. I do think his general success during a very difficult stint last year earned him the right to be considered for the job, in any case.

There were some long discussions about the process and how it would play out. Do I wish that they had a more formal coaching search? Yes. Am I disappointed that DC got it? No, at least not at this point. I have no idea what the team will look like next year and DC had a winning record last year despite the odds stacked against him in numerous ways.

Like others, I do hope he has some veteran coaches on his staff. One thing you can never doubt is his devotion to the team and the City. I think if there is any way that he can be successful, this ownership group and management will support that effort. They have primed him for this position (as frequently discussed). I don't see them not providing him with the players and staff to succeed.

Sean C-Ham said Bobby Jackson is likely joining the staff and it’s possible Mike Woodson (he said this one was more of a maybe) as well. He speculated Barbosa would be returning but didn’t seem think many others would be back.

this is all speculation so here goes, the removal of the interim tag was all Vivek, Perry went along with it because he has no choice. I think Perry would of gone in another direction but since its official, will he get the same time frame as the other coaches? 3 years is about the max you will get out of a head coach, unless proven otherwise. I have no reason to believe as of now that Christie is head coach material, he seems more of a players coach that can build and bring a team together but when you need tough plays run, well that's where the assistant coaches can help. Will be interesting to see who gets brought along. Some quality assistants out there, Scotty Brooks, McMillan, Stotts.

It does seem like Vivek Ranadive influenced too much by Sacramento Kings era nostalgia. He routinely schmoozes former Kings players inviting them to sit next to him at games and so apparently star struck ends up hiring plenty of them. Way to often with bad results to put it mildly. In the end having to dismiss several former Kings players when proven made the mistake. Not that Christie will be yet another one. But one has to wonder if fate, call it misguided meddling by Ranadive not a pattern to be sadly repeated over and over again.

Interim coaches becoming the head coaches are the "in thing" right now. Vivek is ahead of the curve. ;)
It's an interesting point.

In this century the Kings have had five interim coaches. But prior to Doug, the other four were basically not guys we even were considering for the lead position. Kenny Natt and Alvin Gentry didn't even get consideration in the next coaching search to my recollection. Tyrone Corbin was replaced midseason with non-interim Karl. And Keith Smart...well, he did get a second year, but that second year was the one where the Maloofs were trying to sell the team out of Sacramento, so effectively he was the interim coach for the bulk of two seasons. It's not like he won the job, the Maloofs just didn't want to bother to hire anybody else, and they weren't opening their wallets up for it.

But this year, the Kings and Grizz obviously fired their coach and went after their man (Doug and Iisalo). The interim move for Mitch Johnson seems a bit different, as the circumstances of Pop's departure obviously had no resemblance to the Sac/Memphis cases. I have no idea whether they were looking at Johnson as a successor, but he'd been an assistant coach in the org for 10 years so it's possible they were.

I guess we'll see what happens with David Adelman to see if this is a real trend.

Chiming in from Nuggets-land:

It depends. If Adelman wins this series and the next, I would say he's 100% the next coach. If he loses today, meh, maybe not. If he wins today and loses the next series, I'd put it at 50/50. Kroenke is weird with his money. Jokic is the kind of player that you would want to go all in on, but he seems more than content to plug the holes with youth and potential, probably stemming from the MPJ, and to a lesser extent (even though it's more money) Murray contract. They should have kept KCP.

Well, there were 2 young assistant coaches that we know Vivek actively sought and chose, Michael Malone and Doug Christie. Vivek may not always pick the right GM, but he seems to recognize good young coaches when he sees them.

I think Doug will do well with a full off season and a full staff. DC is very cerebral and loyal, I think he will be a good coach for our Kings.

It was widely reported at the time that Jerry West told Vivek to hire Mike Malone. And Doug has is a company man which is not a knock on Doug as head couch, but it is on what Vivek wants under him. ….From ESPN’s Ramona Shellborne on Mike Malone’s hiring… A source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that legendary player and general manager Jerry West, now a consultant with the Warriors, has been counseling Ranadive through the hiring process. Ranadive is in the process of interviewing GM candidates, including Chris Wallace and Travis Schlenk.”
