Petrie is looking for more help

When draft day came and went without more than the No. 10 pick for the Kings, team basketball president Geoff Petrie was asked where the selection of center Spencer Hawes fit into this offseason of hoped-for rebuilding.

"It's the beginning," Petrie said with a laugh. "We've got the whole summer ahead of us."

Had Petrie been able to move up in the draft (he tried) or make a big trade (also discussed), draft day could have been more than a beginning. Hawes, however, is the only remodel thus far, and the free-agency period that began Sunday marks the next step. Once again, the Kings are among the masses working solely with the midlevel exception -- an estimated $6 million per season -- to lure new talent.

But their best chance of attracting a bigger name is via sign-and-trade, the latest potential vehicle for Petrie to move point guard Mike Bibby, small forward Ron Artest or others. Petrie said he has contacted the representatives for the "top four or five" free agents on the market regarding the possibility of a sign-and-trade but did not specify names.

Among the big names available are Seattle small forward Rashard Lewis, Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups, and Charlotte forward and former King Gerald Wallace.

Petrie also confirmed a Salt Lake Tribune report that said former Toronto swingman Morris Peterson, a free agent, was among the players he called about. There is a moratorium on trades and the signing of most free agents until July 11.

"We're not in that game (for the big-name players) unless those situations ... are going to turn into sign-and-trade-type situations," Petrie said. "That doesn't usually happen for a while, and whether we could be involved in them is an open question at this point, too."

As is the likelihood that the Kings will use none, some or all of the midlevel exception.

"We want to keep an eye on our future salary cap and what types of players are available," Petrie said.

Again I feel like Petrie's "interest" in Mo Peterson has to be some sort of quid pro quo with Mark Bartelstein, who happens to represent Mo Williams. Because otherwise it seriously makes no sense.

If I wasn't lazy & unmotivated - I would search trough his quotes from exactly a year ago and I am pretty sure that I would find something very similar to this very meaningless statement. I am yet again not holding my breath.

If we start the season with Mike and Ron playing somewhere else, it would be a success. I am getting mentally ready for a 25 win season.

And just out of curiosity - how many more decades will KTs contract last ?

KT's contract expires the same year as Brad Miller's...and SAR's. The end of the 2009/2010 season.

Mo Pete?? Thats it?? If all we come out of this offseason with is Hawes and Pete, that sucks. Man, I cant wait till next offseason already, this year's free agent crop sucks.

To quote Mr.T in Rocky 3

"pain, lots of pain"

this is Kings 07/08

I personally hope that we don't use our MLE at all this year (at best a part of it, to pick some young talent that may have slipped through the draft, and Petrie might have been thinking about; like Price and Justin in recent years).

We have young players at virtually every position. We don't have much hopes for this year (making the playoffs is a possibility, but a very distant and likely undesirable one). Why add to the payroll and reduce time for the kids by signing some vet for the MLE?

The only way MLE would make sense is if we made some trades, that opened up some roster spots (like trading one or more of our vets for enders and picks).

No, I meant that I hope we don't sign Mo Pete and hope it's just a favour to his agent since we may be interested in Mo Williams. I feel completely the same way as you.

I think you have hit on something... Petrie has a "Mo Fetish"
Mo Evans
Mo Taylor
Now Mo Pete to get Mo Williams

If we could only get Kevin Garnet to change his name to Mo... or how about "Mo Duncan"... Hmmm

I like Mo Howard. :D :D

Do you mean "Mo" Howard as in this guy:

Or Moe Howard, as in this guy:

I'm afraid with our luck, if we didn't clarify which one we wanted, the great god Naismith would, once again, give us exactly what we asked for... bowl haircut and all.

;)

Can he rebond and block shots? :p

i am pretty sure if he had a ben wallace afro with the matching headband nba teams would call his agent off the hook, why not? now a days if you have a fro, 6'10" 240+ pounds and up and could rebound a tee bit your a potential defensive player of the year:p

Kind of off topic here, but even though the contracts last the same amount of time, SAR's is far different from the other two. His is reasonable for his production, and thus is movable (although I wouldn't move him unless it were for an ender). The other two's, well, they'll be in a Kings uniform for the next three years for sure.

I think the point is that 2009 represents the first real chance that the Kings can be flexible. Trading KT and Miller is unrealistic at this point. The only option might be to hang onto them for the three years, build young talent and draft picks, and then act. Whether we trade SAR or not, we are clear of him in 2009-2010.

By 2009, you have a lot of enders to trade to lure in the mising pieces, or you could let them all walk and have the cap room.

Isn't 2009/10 the year Lebron, Wade etc. are free agents? Worst case scenario, KT, Miller and SAR all come off the books and we shed over 20 mill and be big players in FA.....

Or am I missing something and just being hopeful.........

that's possible, but its also three long seasons away. And if that is our grand plan, those are going to be three LONG seasons shuffling back every year to watch Brad and Reef and KT creak louder and louder and louder. And at the end of that time no way Wade or LeBron would come -- why would they? We obviously won't be a good team, and guys like LeBron or Wade are going to be paid max no matter where they go, including staying home. Onyl teams wiht a chance to steal them would be a good team that somehow snuck down in cap room that offseason and had them targeted. Not what would by thta time be a perennial nobody out of a small city.

The mantra is:

Let's Wait and See.............

People forget it now since their future looks so bright, but this is exactly what Portland did. They've missed the playoffs four season running, waited patiently for Damon Stoudamire, Shareef, Dale Davis, Nick Van Exel and a bunch of other guys to expire, sucked a whole lot so they could get some good draft picks (some of which they completely whiffed on -- ie Martell Webster) and then finally made some good moves and got lucky with the #1 to get them going.

That's why it kills me that Pritchard gets so much credit for a "perfect" rebuild. Of course it's great, he came along when all the dirty work was pretty much finished!

It's going to be ugly for a while, and if we're poised to make a big splash in 2010 we'd just be on the same course as the Blazers. Patience is going to be in order.
