Im going to try and go to that game for sure...

I Went that area for the first time tonight, had some GREAT tickets 5 rows behind the basket for the Sweet 16 games... When UCLA scored that last bucket, i have to say it was 5x louder then Arco, and ive been to alot of Kings games. Sucks though, i was going for Gonzaga (Im a huge Adam Morrisson fan.) Got the same seats for the Memphis vs UCLA game on saturday as well... GO MEMPHIS!

California's nickname is "The Golden State", so that's where the moniker comes from. As to why they use it? Er...

The franchise used to be based in Philadelphia in the beginning, then moved and were called the San Franciso Warriors, and then moved again just across the San Francisco Bay to the less posh sister city of Oakland. I'm guessing that they chose "Golden State" just so they could claim to be representing more than just Oakland -- the whole Bay Area actually. Not sure why not just call yourself the Bay Area Warriors or whatnot as they certainly could claim to represent only one little portion of the "Golden State". But maybe they thought by generalizing they could also claim to represent Sacramento, the south bay cities etc., none of whom had any professonal sports teams at the time (circa 1970 or so).

ahh ok.. thanks for the heads up brick...

so oakland is a different city to san francisco? or is it part of san francisco?

You see the same thing in other sports (California Angels, etc) - the team name doesn't necessarily include the name of the city, but most do. As for the Golden State nickname, probably was inspired by the Gold Rush (and hence the name for the San Francisco 49ers) and possibly from this:

The state name is thought to have derived from the mythical paradise of Calafia portrayed in Amadis de Gaula, a 16th century Spanish romance by Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo, which in the book was a difficult to reach land with gold in plenty, free-loving amazons living in caves, strange beasts.

I think you're a bit off on that one.... I don't think amazons go around toting guns.
You're right..their weapon of choice was the bow and arrow. They'd cut of their left breast to keep it out of the way of the string. Ah, the utterly worthless information I carry around in my head. It interferes with remambering where I left my car keys.;)

http://www.pantheon.org/articles/a/amazons.html

The name Amazon is believed to descend from the word amazoi which in Greek means "breast less", deriving from the legend that says they removed their young girls right breast, as to facilitate the drawing of the bow, as the bow and arrows were their main weapon. They also used sword, double sided axe and carried a distinctive crescent shaped shield. Most of their fighting was done from horseback. Some say the breast was removed by cutting, others that it was burnt off while the child was young, and one legend says they removed the breast themselves.

i live in the bay area. maybe just 20-30 mins drive or 30 mins through BART train. i want to go! who has the tickets, seating and for how much? would love to go with fellow Kings fans.

They are big cities across the bay from each other, very VERY different from each other and each has a major pro football team and a major pro baseball team. But only one pro basketball team that used to be in San Francisco but now is in Oakland but called the "Golden State Warriors". BTW, Golden State likely has to do with the discovery of gold in America in 1848.
