The Kings/Griz trade ideas seem to be ever so popular these days so I thought I'd take a stab at it...
Sac Trades:
Kevin Martin
Donte Green
#4 Pick
Memphis Trades
Rudy Gay
Marco Jaric
#2 Pick
Why Sac does it:
First off, I'll admit that I'm a big Rudy Gay fan. I think we can definitely say improved defense there over Martin. And while he's not quite the scorer Martin is, he still averaged 18.9 ppg last season and hit 35% of his 3's. Of course with the number 2 pick we get Rubio who I'm also pretty big on. There were a few nights I happily stayed up till 4-5am to watch the Spanish team play in the Olympics. There are plenty of arguments for and against already so I'm not gonna rehash all that. So that hopefully sets us at the 1,3,4 and 5 for years to come, with a hole we need to fill at the 2. If we can figure out where Curry is going to fall to in the draft maybe we can talk someone into giving up their pick for our #23 and #31 and some cash or something. If nothing else I'd be ok seeing Cisco fill that hole next season and hopefully we can either pick someone up in 2010 draft or use the KT expiring to snag someone. I know in Jaric we're taking on another contract of Kenny Thomas-esque wtfness but without it Memphis points and laughs and walks away. And probably say something mean about Geoff's mom while they're at it.
Why Memphis does it:
Mayo has said he would like to play point guard. (See link below) So sliding him over to the 1 and having Martin at the 2 would make for a pretty deadly backcourt on the offensive end. Memphis has the potential for about $14 mil in capspace this offseason, assuming they keep Warrick around, which should allow them to take a shot at signing Hedo. (Sorry folks, he's not coming back.) With him able to do the point forward thing, this gives Mayo a chance to learn to play pg without all the pressure being dumped on him from day one. So this gives them a pretty solid starting five of Mayo, Martin, Hedo, Warrick and Gasol. With Mayo filling the pg position, the number two pick (aka Rubio) becomes a little less valuable to them. Hence the willingness to trade down. Greene is just a little added filler... Hedo is quite a bit older than the rest of the starting five, so maybe by the time Hedo is ready to call it a day hopefully Donte will be ready to fill his shoes. With Gay around, and Noc backing him up, I don't see Donte doing anything but rotting on the bench here and I'd like to see the kid get a chance to play even if it's not here.
Here's the link to the SI article with Mayo saying he'd like to play point guard... although if you do a search on it you'll find it's a somewhat popular theme.
