Accord reached!!!

Why are people excited?

Perhaps because - for the first time - we've seen something tangible and positive come out of this whole arena issue.

I was excited about the Kings coming to Sacramento before they ever got on a plane, too. It's kind of the same.

It's the people who are excited right now that will do the most to make sure this proposal passes.
Believe me, I'm not knocking the people that are excited, I just don't understand. And I'm "glad" the Arena will be on the ballot. However, like I mentioned before its great to see them reach an agreement after they worked their tails off and I might add having us fans go through an emotional roller coaster of yea, it looks good...then..no it doesn't look good. I'm going to be the first one to vote come election day, however, I just don't want to get excited then come to find out it doesn't pass. I guess you could say I'm going at this news "cautiously".

I mean look at the KCRA poll, its just way too close to where it can go one way or another.

Just wondering if anyone knows if there are plans to build a new practice facility on the railyard site? It would make sense to have them next door to each other, but then again, it wouldn't make sense to blow up a relatively new practice facility on the soon to be old Arco grounds. Just looking ahead... and being optimistic. :p

I was thinking about that, too. I would assume that, since the Maloofs already own it and it is so new, that they would use it and not build a new one anytime soon.

Then again, maybe they's reap enough benefit from the land sale that they could afford a new one and the buyers could use the existing one for a community center with nice workout space and indoor courts?

A former resident of Grand Forks, North Dakota (UND, baby!), I wish people could forsee how great this could be. An alumni named Englestead put forth a huge amount of money to build a $140 million hockey arena for the college, and a regional bank built an $80 million sports dome, and both have done wonders for the town. High profile concerts, sold-out sporting events, new hotels, new restaurants, and most importantly, NEW JOBS. If it makes a difference in Grand Forks ND (a.k.a. middle of nowhere), think of what it could do here!

Hopefully people will look toward the long-run. Yes, it's funded by tax, but is .0025% really going to pinch people's pockets?

The fact the poll is so close is, in and of itself, extremely encouraging considering how negative public perception was before the actual proposal was set forth.

I'm excited about the possibility. It's a lot better than hearing today that time had run out and that a proposal wouldn't be on the ballot, meaning nothing could go before the voters until 2008 at the earliest.

This is huge. The points of agreement show a willingness to work together that I can't EVER remember seeing in Sacramento politics before.

I just wanted to point out with everyone so concerned that the Maloofs are getting a freebie handout, that somebody else is cashing in on this deal. Yes your favorite city is going to be free to sell the 100 acres of land adjacent to Arco Arena. This land is commonly referred to as the hole in the ground that was supposed to host the Raiders or some MLB team. Well that land went though a variety of owners and banks before it's final owners, the late Fred Anderson and Buzz Oates, DONATED the 100 acres to the city of Sacramento. And now the city is going to sell that for approx $500,000 an acre. I suck at math, but I see about 50 million dollars of pure profit for the city.

I'm encouraged to see that the rail yard developers have some space zoned for hotel use right by where a new arena would go. I think having that sort of thing is really huge in terms of bringing in out of towners for potential multi-day events.

Indeed. The whole chance to effectively double the size of downtown is really incredible and should not be wasted. This project, with the arena at the center, can really do wonders for Sacramento.

Cost of the arena itself, according to Rob Fong on 1140 at 8 pm, is estimated to be about $377 million. Rest of the costs are infrastructure (utilities, roads, parking structure, etc).

Watch, when it does not pass we will lose the Kings, than some of the people that voted no will wonder where the Kings went.

If we go out into the public we have to let people know that the Kings will be out of here if they don't get a new arena.

You would be suprised how many people don't know this. My mom, and sister did not know this. Good thing I educated them into yes votes..

That KCRA poll is too close for comfort. I think a lot of Kings fans voted which kind of distorted it a bit.

That's not the city's only freebie. The city does not own the railyards. When the arena is finished and open for business, the money the Maloofs contributed become instant equity in the property for the city. That's money the Maloofs give to the city. (I'm not naive, they are giving it to buy a future revenue stream, of course. Out of which they still have to pay the city rent.)

You might want to check out the "Education Points" thread. There are a lot of other ways to convince people this is the right move for the county and the entire region.

It's a mistake to use the "the Kings will be out of here if they don't get a new arena" as your only selling point IMHO.

I dont want to get TOO worked up over this...but I just watched the press conferences from both the Maloofs and City/County, and I must say, my heart has renewed energy seeing this...and to the anti voters, i.e.: People United...I DARE you to overlook ANYTHING in this deal!! This agreement is incredible! The Maloofs make money...they city/county make money, the Kings/Monarchs stay here for 30 years to come, and the Maloofs become even MORE involved and rooted in our ever-changing, expanding city, that they will help make even more remarkable and beautiful in being here. Today was a remarkable day for our city...first this agreement...then a few hours ago the groundbreaking of The Towers on Capitol Mall! SOMEBODY PINCH ME DAMMIT!!:):)
