Abdur-Rahim Becomes Kings Assistant Coach

So there's your big-man coach. Maybe not the right guy to teach defense, but he did know how to score. No doubt about that.

I would be interested to hear what people think about this choice?!

Generally I think its lazy and uninspired, having failed to acquire a real big man coach at any time over the summer. Reef doesn't act the part in the least, and his big qualification is that Geoff may have liked him as a fellow man without an apparent pulse.

Its also, however, somewhat standard practice in these situations (player being bought out/retiring), for reasons I have never understood.

In any case, the real test will be if this continues on past this season, or whether Shareef will "decide to explore other opportunities in life", in which we will of course offer him our best. That too would be fairly standard in these situations.

There was a quote from Thompson the other day where he said that SAR had been a lot of help to him and other young guys over the summer at the practice facility, so the team seeing that was probably a factor. On the surface, he might not be the type of player you immediately think of as a coaching candidate, but it's not like he's going to teach the big guys to play like a clone of him. Just having a guy who has been around the league focusing on a few of the young guys and helping their development stay on track could be an added value.

Now if all of the sudden next year the big guys are breaking out the whirly-gig spin moves on every play, we can rethink this. ;)

First, welcome to Kingsfans.com!

About the choice? I think it's an excellent idea. SAR is a class act, he's well liked by the entire team, and he has knowledge and skills that can be taught to our kids.

I do disagree with my respected colleague. I think this was possibly in the works for a while, since I'm sure the team has been following SAR's medical condition closely. It might have been something they actually discussed with Shareef as a possible option open to him should he choose to retire.

This is a good move for the team and I'm very glad to see it.

6 assistant coaches...almost reminds me of the Mavericks from a few years back that had like 9 I believe it was, when Don Nelson was in his first few years.

I'm glad to see Reef stay in the organization, but as an another assistant? It's questionable right now but I'll definitely let him prove himself before I judge this decision.

I'm surprised to see the Maloofs give him more $ than he's already scheduled to earn though

hey since we missed out on hiring or resigning corliss perhaps this is one of those moves eh?

the guy is a class act yes.. also he could be a locker room presence in a mentor kind of way people will tend to respect him IMO

so i like the signing and heres to hoping he gets the kids to flourish eh

i'm really liking this is shows we have a classy orginazation who dosn't turn its back on a player who's carrear was shorten with injury, also back in his prime he was very good in the post if he can help thompson and hawes get better then this could be considered anouther petrie good move

He seems like a good guy.
And he already complains to refs like a coach, anyway. :)
If he's a good teacher, I could care less what kind of player he was. I doubt they'd hire him to coach based on his playing days.
