2010 Vancouver Olympics

Fantastic hockey win by Team USA. Best empty net goal I have ever seen. Gotta grab me one of those 60s Squaw Valley retro sweaters. Miller's mask is awesome too.

Took in curling tonight. It appears there is some bitterness towards the US hockey win going round as the Canadian crowd began largely chanting for China as they were about to wrap up the match.

Hockey last night was great - the Fins and Swedes really tried to one up each other in the crowd, I think I have the Canada-Germany game tomorrow. Will be interesting to see how the Canadian team responds. Today's news they were debating Canada's chances as fiercely as American's debate politics on a Sunday morning.

Just want to say that NBC is the biggest garbage of the TV in the world and it is the only TV station on this planet which doesn't show anything live and even tapedelay is ruined because of commercial breaks that are longer than the tape itself. Even North Korea shows things live. Thank god for the internet and foreign TV stations.

Well, part of the problem here is that all national TV networks, except for one very small network (PBS) are all private, big corporation-owned networks in the business to make money and maximize profit.

Unfortunately, with more and more media in the US being owned and controlled by mega corporations, freedom of the press means less and less. Were more or less going to get the information we get filtered by big business.

On the other hand, I'm at work and can't watch most of the events live, even though I'm in the same time zone. So an evening broadcast mostly works for me, even though I'd like to see more of the competitors performances and definitely less commercials. Still I'm watching way more TV hours than usual and missing out on some sleep.

I have no problems with tape delay as long as you have an option to watch it live which you don't

I tried to watch ski jumping tape delayed and they would skip 5-6 jumpers because of commercials which is pathetically rude.

Last night after I got home from Curling someone had it on NBC, they were showing some human interest piece that was 20 mins +. I flipped to the Canadian channels, they had an ice dancing replay, aerial skiing replay, ski jumping replay and the two women's hockey games replayed. All of these events were shown live on these channels too. The difference is ridiculous, I don't know much about Canadian TV but surely some of these stations are for profit. NBC provides lousy coverage because they have no reason not to. They say "we got the ratings" and leave it at that. Since there's no other options and they've even somehow managed to get the internet feeds blocked out, of course anybody who wants to watch watches their coverage. Doesn't mean we like it.

Canada had a great rebound game today. Awesome being in that crowd, we took the baby and he was on the jumbotron. Tomorrow we have US and Canada (2 games). Trying to get a US Hockey sweater but they are all sold out! I'm guessing it's just because they didn't have many to begin with, but still. I feel a bit bad asking Canadians about it since they are all still a bit bitter, we are seeing it every where we go.

Potential for a US-Canada gold exists so they can always have the last laugh.

I'm not bitter about it. We got our butts handed to us. I just hope that loss lit a fire underneath all of them. But Rafalski is a great offensive defenseman.

I think we need to keep Luongo in net like we did today against Germany. I never saw the game today, but if they don't start playing better than they did against the U.S. or Switzerland, they're not making it past Russia who they play next, let alone the U.S. in the final (potentially)

Luongo didn't really get tested today, let in two, but Germany was rather sloppy passing and didn't really get good shots on their opportunities. However, Canada's attack was sharp. But hard to gauge vs. Germany how effective it would be against stiffer competition and they failed to convert some gimme's, but can't complain about 8 goals.

I think they are back on the right track.

Back from USA-Switzerland. NBC is tape delaying so I won't spoil, but we were seated behind Captain America and I got on the jumbotron a few times if you're watching at home and see the guy in the mask next to another guy with a red and white wig.

I was pretty disappointed that the bitterness has spilled over to where the majority of the crowd was rooting against us. I think Canadians and American all prefer the hard hitting yet still skilled North American brand of hockey to the Euro finesse game and we should all be united in wanting to see a Gold-Silver finish even if we don't agree on who gets which. That and having a 6 or 7 year old screaming in my ear about how much the US sucks kinda bummed me out.

Next up is Canada vs. Russia in about 90 mins. Probably the best matchup I will see between the two gold medal favorites entering the tourney. One will be walking away without a medal.

Gooooooo canada!!!

Canada cleanin up shop in hockey tonight!!!!!!! 15 medals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wanna see a jamaican bobsled team win the gold in honor of the movie "cool runnings"

I'm rooting for you guys Friday but I will still chuckle if you lose because Canada fans are running around acting like they've already clinched the gold medal now.

I was treated to more resentment at the Canada - Russia game tonight, fans behind me couldn't enjoy a 7-3 thrashing and the fact that we were seated a few rows in front of Wayne Gretzy's box and near the Ice Dancing gold medalists, they had to talk about US hockey ALL NIGHT.

I love Canadian hockey and would be thrilled with a silver if Canada wins gold, they have more of my favorite players than Team USA, it just seems so silly to me. 8 years ago Canada wasn't playing on away ice the whole tournament.

I too don't mind Canada gold USA silver, hoping its the other way around. But after listening to the Rise Guys and here them chanting EF USA...I hope they choked.

I have no disrespect for any of the teams involved in the tournament, and I think there's a decent chance that Canada doesn't win gold. But you guys gotta realize that hockey in Canada is like basketball to Americans a few years ago. You guys always had gold in basketball before the tournament even started. But other countries have slowly caught up to you, and are at least making the games interesting. That's the way us Canadians think. Personally I don't expect them to win gold every time, but we usually have the best team on paper. That means nothing, which has been proved again and again, but it's hard for some people to realize that we don't always win. Again, not me personally. I'm not even that big a hockey fan.

Isn't Russia and Sweden pretty hardcore at hockey too?

/shrug I'm not a hockey fan but I'm just rooting for team USA the underdog.

(Gold Medal)
After looking it up...Canada dominate the game until 1950s when Russia start to win.

They dominate it until the USA, woohoo, did a miracle on them in 1980. Since then Russia won 2 more, Sweden won two and Czech, Canada and Unified Team won one each.

The Soviet Union used to be a ginormous power but they were basically sending a pro team that played together year round against amateurs with limited time as a unit until 1998. Russian pros didn't even hit the NHL until the early 90s.

The "real" tournament before the NHL began suspending its season to allow everyone to compete was the Canada Cup (now the World Cup). In the Canada Cup it was a lot more evenly matched.

I understand what hockey means to Canada, I just don't get the F USA stuff that I am getting here from some fans. It isn't in the olympic spirit at all and I thought our rivalry was a "friendly" one. I've bought as much Canada gear as US gear while here.

I took in the Sweden/Finland Women's Bronze match just now. As someone who is not an admirer of women's hockey this was a great game, a lot more physical than what I thought was allowed, though there were a few penalties for routine checking in a men's game. Unfortunately the crowd wasn't quite at the same level. The President of Finland was in attendance which was very cool.

Canada actually hadn't had a gold medal in 50 years before Salt Lake. The US won one at Squaw Valley in 1960 as well. Its kind of hard to imagine the Olympics at Squaw Valley where I spent so much time skiing as a youngster.

By the way from Wiki:

The Unified Team was the name used for the sports team of the former Soviet Union.

I was wondering what country was the Unified Team from.

I believe the Russian federation officially recognizes the Unified Team's medal as theirs. I may be mistaken but the only other former Soviet Republic I see around here is the Ukraine.

They have these really sweet jackets and gear with this scripting on them and all the Russians are decked to the nines in them. I went to the store to buy some US stuff (also got a sweet Squaw Valley sweatshirt) and the Russian stuff was front and center. It was also about 10 times the cost of anything else with lightweight hoodies starting around $300.

I don't know if they are always this present at the games or if its because they are hosting 2014 but aside from Canadians (and Dutch at the speed skating) Russians are the most abundant group here.

Yeah I don't really get that either. And yes I understand that Canada hasn't really dominated hockey like the US has dominated basketball, I just pointed out that in my lifetime at least, they've always seemed to have the best team on paper. Hockey is more of a "team" sport than basketball though..as in, 1 player has more of an impact on a basketball team than a hockey team, excluding goalies.

Anyway, I myself was surprised how well we played against Russia yesterday. Truthfully, they were my pick for the gold. Hard to believe a team with Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk, Gonchar and Nabokov aren't even getting bronze.

I had speedskating tickets so I haven't seen the game yet, of course they spoiled the score, but when its that one sided you don't mind.

Headed home in the morning. Will miss Vancouver a lot, its a really great city and they are great hosts. Hopefully I can sneak in some shopping in the morning before heading out, but also want to take in some nightlife tonight. Maybe my wife will be kind enough to drive a bit after we cross the border.

Oh yeah, at the speedskating event we sat next to Canadians. We rooted for them, they rooted for us. Then we went head to head and US came out on top. My faith in friendly neighbors is restored.

Also we beat the Dutch in the men's semi-final race to set up a showdown with Canada tomorrow and watching Sven pout was awesome. Unfortunately my camera ran out of juice so I didn't capture it.

Back home. Looks like it was another banner day for Canada, 3 golds? Hopefully we can get the gold they really want tomorrow.

Last night was crazy, I went to do some last minute shopping and try to catch things I had missed, I was coming up the subway and had some USA gear and the whole subway started chanting F* USA. Lots of crazies stirring it up with me and some good back and forth, my favorite was a guy who kept yelling "Don't even show up on Sunday" to which my response was "Why, are you afraid we'll [beat you] again?" Got real quiet after that. Amongst all the chaos I had some great hockey chat with some locals and got them to admit that no matter what we were glad to be rid of the Euros and have a good hard hitting physical match ahead.

In any event, the streets were like what you see after a city wins a championship in the states without any looting or turning over of cars. Kind of funny since there is one game left, but it was Friday night. And despite the taunting I never really felt like anyone was going to cheap shot me from behind or anything. As one Canadian told me "You don't have anything to worry about, we prefer weed to guns." That was comforting.

I think I will miss that place a lot. Now daydreaming about Sochi in 2014.

lol oh how true it is. its pretty much legal here.

HERE WE GO CANADA VS USA!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CANADA!!!

Im not really into hockey but this is hugely exciting.

That last second goal was almost surreal as it's so damn hard to score in a 20 minute period, let alone the last 30 seconds of the gold medal game!

USA! USA! USA!
