I'll agree that at the lower weights, you can still find good technical professional boxing... but I tend to be personally biased against the little guys.
Is that because you want to see a one punch knockout, or because you don't like little guys?

The former is why I suspect most in the US are fixated with heavyweights, I think that could be solved somewhat by a little tinkering with the weight classes, especially on the top end.

I am too, I've just come to accept that we don't make very compelling fights most of the time. :)

eta: Because this has gone off on a non-Olympic tangent, you know what would be compelling? Big guys doing the pole vault.

Heh - when I was in high school I was on the track team as a shot/discus guy for a couple years. I was't that good, but we had fun.

At most of the competitions at the end of the day they would have the shot/discus guys do a short relay race if there was time - just for fun. They called it the "fat man" relay. ;)

I guess I just don't consider 0700 to be early in the morning anymore... :p

:D No, it was not early for me.....well maybe 30 minutes before I usually get up on a Sunday morning. Which is why I was up to watch it. If you guys were watching it live on the east coast, I would have loved to have been watching at the same time, not 3 hours later when we already knew the outcome. As someone said, you couldn't go to the website without the results shouting at you on the main page.

I have been enjoying what I have seen so far. The games are going extremely well, and as a supporter of team USA (via the US Olympic Commitee), I like seeing how we have supported our athletes to compete in Bejiing. They all make me proud. :)

So there's finally something good about dial-up? I stay away from the website because it's so graphic intensive it takes forever to load.

Yes, the worst is that even if you manage to somehow get to the part where you can watch a replay online without finding out the results (which are posted at every click), if you happen to accidentally drag your mouse over the window of the replay it posts the event result in an overlay over the video.

Somebody had to program it to do that and think that it was a good idea.

I'm watching the women's gymnastics and I hear in the background that sounds like kids talking/yelling/screaming (take your pick)....its kind of annoying.

Have you ever watched the US championships, world championships, or previous Olympics women's gymnastics competition? The assorted yelling is cheering and happens all the time - every time. The "kids" making noise are mostly team members cheering on whoever is out on the floor. And they are "kids," since US team is made up of a slew of 16 year old gymnasts. The Chinese "women" acrobats are just as noisy, but made up a slew of listed 15-16 year olds, even though a bunch could be 14, 13 or even as young as 12 - ILLEGAL since 15 years of age is the minimum. Coach Bela Karolyi flat out says the Chinese are using underage gymnasts at these games in Beijing.

Wow. One of the women competing for Germany is in her 30s!!! And competed formerly for Russia. Incredible athlete - and a touching personal story.

I love the Olympics.

:)

I love the Olympics, but hate the way they're broadcast. It would be nice if NBC let me decide what was boring, rather than just not covering half of the races/events.

On a completely different note, though... broad shoulders, strong backs, and long arms... male swimmers have the most perfectest bodies in the world.

O. M. G.!

That's all I can say....
That's about it for me, too.
That has to rank up there with one of the most amazing Olympic performances I've ever seen! To smash the world record by 4 seconds is incredible and unheard of in swimming, a sport measured in 100ths of a second. The 5th place Swiss even beat the former world record!

To beat the trash-talking, heavily-favored French made it that much sweeter.:D

That was incredible!!!!! I could watch that about a hundred times. :)

I got up at 5 a.m. instead of at 6 a.m. so I could watch Kara Lawson and our US team play China. Yippee!! They are showing it live on USA channel. What a way for this old lady to start her birthday.

I'm sorry but you are wrong, the guy that overcame childhood asthma to become the world's greatest archer is just not as exciting to watch as the French swimmer who dated an Italian swimmer, got dumped for a different Italian swimmer and now has to race against her, even though neither was predicted to medal. C'mon, this is Desperate Housewive's timeslot

On a positive note, the cable channels do seem to cater to those that do want a more serious sports only presentation, and if you don't mind having the results spoiled the replays available on the interwebs are even presented sans commentary (at least what I saw was).

Well, excuse me. No, I hardly watch any gynmastics or even the olympics and the rare few times that I had watch gynmastics, I don't remember any scream/yellings/cheering in the background.

If you want to see a lot of sports, don't watch the primetime version. Watch the cable broadcasts (like MSNBC or USA). Also, if you have a DVR, use it! (If you don't, then consider selling your left arm for one... they're fabulous.) I'm not a fan of the backstories, and I haven't watched any this weekend. I've seen badminton, handball, basketball, archery, weightlifting, fencing, etc. Some were exciting depsite being low profile sports or having non-American competitors. Maybe they didn't show them on the main NBC broadcast, but if you get those other channels I'd watch them and fast forward to the good parts of the NBC shows.

Probably a big reason you are hearing for the first time more so-called yelling at these Olympic gymnastics events is that they have WAY more sophisticated audio and cameras set up - and MUCH closer to the athletes.

The cheering at gymnastics competitions is always there because of the rotation system -- all of the events are going on at the same time. I used to always be annoyed by hearing the floor exercise music going while watching uneven bars when I was a kid.

So true, but I've been looking for a backend for my generic childhood asthma story for years. :p
And making jokes about the childhood near drowning experience of the African American swimmer on last night's 4x100 relay team (he's been all over TV this morning and, wouldn't you know it, his name left me) would be too insensitive.

Cullen Jones. Actually seems like a very nice young man.

Does anyone know where I can watch highlights of basketball games? Unfortunately I haven't seen any of Spains games yet and none of my channels are showing the USA game which is on right now .

Just looking at the schedule now, and they're not even showing USA vs. Spain on Thursday
This is unbelievably disappointing.
