The defensive effort was definitely there tonight, but can a bunch of aging vets keep that pace all season long? It’s encouraging, but i have a feeling it’s not going to go quite as well when they play legit teams.

I suspect what we currently call a "logjam" may be getting appreciatively renamed to "depth" as the season rolls on...

To be fair, the only other home opener they won at G1C was during COVID without anyone in the building so I’m not sure that really counts haha
I'm aware; they've been repeating that particular bit of trivia all night.

And I'd say it does, but mileage obviously varies.

Fans or no fans, did they play the game and get the win at Golden One Center or not? That’s the only factor that matters.

Records say they did.

Furthermore, if the records also say that the LA LeBron’s bubble title counts — despite the same fan issue and playing neutral site games and playing a fragmented season spaced several months apart and not allowing all 30 teams the chance to compete and a good share of the games biggest stars on IR when it occurred — then the KINGS home opener in 2020 definitely counts as well.

I’m all for this. Demar is an amazing talent but I would have a lot more fun watching this team without him.
I mean, on his good days, DDR can bail you out of some ugly possessions from the 10th second of the shot clock on.

But he's caught in the tweener position defensively that it's not likely that he can keep up with the rest of the team on that end.

I mean...If you ain't gonna count THAT, then nothing that ever happened during COVID as it relates to sports should count.

As Slim said they repeated the stat all night. I saw it this morning and posted it here. George has no excuse not to post it correctly other than he's a dingbat.

Utah actually seems a lot scarier than I thought they'd be. They held LAC to 47 points in the first half of their game and looks like they coasted to the finish. Still don't like only winning by one on our home floor. But it was a gritty win. Anyone figure out where Keon's flop was?

Yes it was shown at the end of the challenge that it was in the previous possession (and again wasn't so much of a flop, like it was written before we see that a dozen times in each match it always goes unpunished).
The lane violation was more obvious (he entered way too early) but it could have been called to Filipowski as well earlier in the game (he entered before Eubanks I think tried to shoot the first attempt even).
The refs were bad (for both sides) LaVine fouled Markkanen (Drapes called it "good defense") at crunch time.

Off topic but wow, imagine being a Dallas Maverick fan right now. They are seething on every forum I can find over how lazy AD is even in comparison to Luka, who we'll see on Sunday.

Hope we will have a great season (though i doubt that), I didn't like how the team performed in preseason and the first two matches, the "summer Kings" were a joy to watch.
Utah is trying to build a team with many 7 footers that can shoot the ball (Kessler started making threes) so to be a threat in defense and have many ways to hit a basket in offense. No idea if that project will work since according to rumors Kessler will leave and they will probably trade Lauri at some point.
Kings got lucky IMO with the 3s, it's not so common for us lately to hit that many with nice percentage and defended the 3 well in the first half, like it happened at Phoenix too. LaVine started hot (like at Phoenix) but was gone in Q3 and most of Q4 but finally made some shots in the final possessions.
Keon played a bit more (because Clifford was OUT I assume) and like I wrote before I expected Cardwell to play as well despite that weird "+16 +17" of Saric and Eubanks. I mean Eubanks is ok in defense but what the hell is he trying to do in offense? And Saric can shoot the ball but he is non existent as a defender.
Carter also DNP, Max as well (would be hard for him at the defensive part I guess), Westbrook had an impact but we will have several "Live by Westbrook, die by Westbrook" moments this season and it will be against weak teams, I don't see us being competitive at all.

Westbrook lit the beam (i wasn't sure we will carry on with that), and at least for now no "defensive player of the game" has been mentioned in the social media.

I do like that we are actually trying on defense. The rotations are completely random at this point, only to get worse once Clifford is back.
I'm really looking forward to having Nique and Keegan out there at the same time. Pair them with Sabonis and we suddenly have some very tough and smart players out there

The flop call was so dumb for many reasons. Listening to Katie’s confusion as to what was happening. Then claiming that it couldn’t have happened on an earlier play, even though the refs can call it after subsequent plays so they don’t stop the flow of play. Then having them showing the replay finally of the earlier play where the flop was called, where I think Katie wasn’t watching so she was still confused. After all that neither she nor Draper commented on how keons foot was stepped on which clearly made him fall (ie. Obviously not a flop). Then Katie finishing it off for good with a final statement of confusion as Utah missed the technical free throw.

Herr Schroeder was in the house.....I'm starting to like this frohlich band of defending.....it is coach Christie's team....I'm going to bite it with League Pass. Chrisite's only mistke is leaving out Carter and Cardwell - get those MFers in.

I thought basketball was like Monopoly: you are not allowed to call "Charge!" two turns (possessions) after it happened. No wonder Katie was confused. In any case, that whole long delay took the wind out of Sacramento's sails, and Utah quickly came back to tie the game, then take the lead.

Schröder and LaVine played well in crunch time. It was a welcome sight.

Certainly some tomfoolery was afoot. I'm glad Sabonis spoiled their party.

I missed the game because I decided a Sierra Foothill League football game was more worth my time.

Is Vivek finally paying for his mismanagement in attendance?

The defensive effort was there tonight, and against a legit team that had just beaten another legit team, and after a crushing loss where two key officiating mistakes went against them in the final two minutes of the previous game.

When our expectations are this low, its great to see some very real things worth celebrating.

I haven't regretted getting League Pass... it's frustrating and clunky at times, but without it I would rarely see a Kings game (and what would I do with all that low blood pressure??).

You're absolutely not going to see that reflected in attendance at the home opener, when there's still a good deal of "hope" and "vibes" in the air for the ticket-buying public. After Christmas, however, when the Kings are very likely in a massive hole and the play-in is already looking like a fantasy, I'd expect to see a pretty big drop-off.

It's better, but Doug WILLINGLY had a crunch time lineup with Russ/Eubanks/Saric playing together. Benched the dude who made 5 3's and had 20 points in 20 minutes.

It worked out, because we played UTA, who somehow might be a more dysfunctional franchise than we are with no future with a bunch of young guys while we have no future with a bunch of old guys that are all still decent at basketball. There's a lot of draft capital on that team that kinda just sucks.

Kings get a real test on Sunday with the Lakers coming up, there's got to be a better plan than whatever this was tonight.

W is a W, LIGHT THE BEAM, all that hoopla, but outside of LaVine/Monk looking incredible, I'm not encouraged by pretty much anything we saw tonight. We escaped with a W, because those 2 played incredible offensive games. We lose this if they're anywhere near their median-type performance

Yeah, my takeaway is similar. The Kings lost by four points to the Phoenix Suns, who are going to compete with the Jazz for worst-in-the-conference honors. And then the Kings beat that same Jazz team by a single point on a Sabonis paint bucket after he corralled an offensive rebound, and after Malik spent the game going thermonuclear from three. While it's nice to see the team walk away from their home opener with a win, it's awfully hard to be excited about a roster that can barely hang with the West's basement dwellers. I've predicted the Kings to go 7-18 in their first 25 games, and that was accounting for a 2-0 start! That they've begun the season 1-1 is not a cause for optimism in my view, especially when we have no idea how long Keegan is going to be out. It's going to be a tough season.
