Here’s the scenario…
You find yourself stranded on a beautiful tropical island, filled with lush forests, abundant foods, free of venomous snakes, tigers, and all manner of unpleasantness. You have shelter, sustenance, and perhaps even some female companionship if you have joined some of the other drafts and planned accordingly. What you are lacking is some entertainment (besides the female companionship of course). To ease this burden you have decided to raid a shipment of supplies bound for a neighboring island rich with bountiful media bliss, Kingstown. Unfortunately, you are out of range of their television network, but you do have a solar powered multipurpose video projector that can play VHS tapes, DVDs, and Blue-Ray Disks and a large comfortable cave with which to sit and sip fermented passion fruit beverages and soak in your favorite films. What you need now is a selection of films with which to properly stock your man-cave.
Unfortunately, the shipment of media holds only one copy of each movie, and there is competition from 15 other islanders for these supplies. Furthermore, you have limited room in your pack and can only carry about 20 films back with you to your island. Collaboration is futile, as these savage cretins would rather tear you limb from limb than share their wine, women, and entertainment. Once raided, the citizens of Kingstown will adapt to this piracy and future shipments will be impervious to further raids. In an attempt at diplomacy, one of the members decides to form a draft to enable each member to get at least a few of the movies they would want. Straws are drawn to determine order, and the selection begins…
There are of course rules:
1) Only movies in the imdb.com database are eligible. This is how the citizens of Kingstown ordered their media, and that’s all that was available on the boat. This rule is in place for several reasons. First, to give a limit (however small) to the amount of content actually draftable helps qualify it for easier list compiling. Furthermore, in the event of confusion or utter obscurity, it is fairly easy to determine the eligibility of a selection by its inclusion and info on imdb.com. This site was extremely helpful for the TV Show draft, and we’ll make good use of it here as well. Lastly, it actually works as a great reference as to what the film is about, and adds some richness to the draft as well. Wikipedia may also be wise to link to, as well as youtube embedded links and so forth. No copyright violating or other breaking of standard forum rules will be acceptable however.
2) Also, no porn…Your female companions may not approve, and it goes against the pleasant family nature of this board. Only movies rated G-R are eligible. Unrated versions must be handled on a case-by-case basis with the draft commissioner via PMs. If there is conflict, a non-drafting arbiter may determine eligibility and appropriateness of a selection.
3) Movies are only eligible to draft if they have been released as of their date of drafting. Unfortunately, our island does not have the capacity for prerelease screenings. Therefore future projects, which may even be found on imdb.com are ineligible until their day of release.
4) There will be 16 drafting members with a winner determined by playoff voting at kingsfans.com. That island will be considered the island with the best movie selection, and will get huge bragging rights and a bright, shiny trophy next to their avatar.
5) Seeding will be determined by rankings given by each drafting member. Drafting order will be determined at random by a non-drafting arbiter and will occur in a serpentine format where the first pick chooses last in round 2 and first in round 3 and so on. There will be 20 total rounds, and thus 20 total movies in each collection. Each member will have a 24-hour window with which to make their selection before they “time-out”. Timed-out picks may be made up at any time but the sooner the better. If a member has a timed-out pick on the board and it is their turn again, they will be skipped until their make-up selections are in. After 3 timed-out picks, a draft pick will be forfeited for each subsequent time-out.
6) Movies may not be selected in sets, therefore movies in a trilogy must be selected individually. The exception here is for extremely long movies that were released as a single film but require multiple disks/tapes to play (these are legal unless each was released as a separate film).
7) No repeat picks will be allowed, even for slightly different versions. Members may choose to identify which cut of the film they select, and all further versions of that work are ineligible for the remainder of the draft. Remade films with entirely different casts and crews are acceptable as they are unique versions of that work. For example, both the 1979 and 2005 versions of the Amityville Horror would be eligible because they contain entirely different casts/crews/directors/etc.
8) Bartering is outlawed for this draft. The raid will be brief, and there just won’t be time. Plus, it isn’t very sporting for those members who planned ahead and drafted strategically. Therefore, no trading picks, you’re stuck with what you pick.
9) You are selecting films that you would happily be stuck watching for the rest of your days. Don’t select movies for your girlfriend, kids, pets, other drafters etc. These choices reflect your personal tastes and what you would like to return to over and over again for your entertainment. Pick accordingly and please back up your selections with write-ups when possible, and time permits. This adds to the richness of the draft, and who knows, maybe we may even learn a thing or two about some new, interesting movies and about each other as Kings fans. Have fun, and happy drafting!
10) The all powerful island overlord (a Mr. Bricklayer) has decreed a final rule for this draft/raid, the BRICKLAYER DOCTRINE. Back in his day, he successfully completed a similar tactical assault on a media surplus and created a video collection of his own. He has decreed that members participating in this raid for a second time may only select 5 films that were previously chosen for their lists during the original Tropical Island Movie Draft. This rule was invoked to spice things up a bit, and add a bit more originality. Plus, 9 rules is a bit weird, and 10 is a good, round number, so there it is.
