Our 6 year-old son is watching Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope, you know, the one from 1977) for the first time. Kinda funny (and sad, in a way) he knows a lot of the movie parts before they happen because he has been playing the Lego Star Wars game on the Wii and DS. Oh, yes, we are watching the original theatrical version (not the more recent "digitally enhanced" version). Han shoots first! :D

Took a trip up to the high country yesterday, it was snowing something fierce for a while, but thankfully it cleared up just as I got to the bottom of the pass. Snapped a few pictures, of which I think this turned out the best. It's actually a composite image of 6 or so pictures, stitched together to form a panorama. I actually did very little editing to the picture itself, it was really that beautiful up there yesterday. 10 points to anyone who can guess where it was taken.

The only reason I keep my laserdisc player. Yeah, I know he finally released it on DVD but it was not even an anamorphic transfer so none of my money for you George. He better release it properly on Blu-Ray.

why is it when babies need more then a five minute nap all they will take is a 5 min nap?
Sleepless nights is, by far, the worst aspect of being a new parent. Sometimes my daughter (who turns four this month) wakes up in the middle of the night, especially when she's not feeling well, and it's incredibly frustrating. I don't know how I dealt with that when she was a baby. Every two or three hours, up changing, feeding, burping a baby? Wow. Parents are awesome.

Widowmaker2K: I don't recognize the place, but that's a beautiful picture! :)
Hey thanks! I actually took it up on Monitor Pass, at about 7,500 feet, looking West towards California. The other side of the pass looks in the Pine Nut Mountains and Nevada (pictured in the following attachment). Most people don't even realize that kind of stuff is up there (in the Sierras), but all you have to do is get off the beaten path a little bit.

Unfortunately, this one didn't come out so well. I forgot to set the camera to manual, so the lighting settings changed, and I didn't allow enough overlap (hence the gaps). Still, you can see that the area is very beautiful indeed!

There is such wonderful beauty in the Sierras. California is the most populous state in the US. Some times I wonder if people who've never been here realize how empty and serenely peaceful so much of California is, especially in the north. I know that's one of the reasons I love Northern California.

Time to batten down the hatches (summer is finally over)

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 4:04 PM PDT on October 10, 2009

... Heavy rains and strong winds possible Tuesday into Wednesday...

Moisture from the remnants of Super Typhoon Melor continues to
move across the northern Pacific Ocean and is forecast to reach
the West Coast early next week. Computer models combine this
moisture with a powerful jet stream and develop a strong storm
that moves through the area. This storm has the potential to
produce a significant amount of precipitation and wind for the
interior of northern California Tuesday and Wednesday along with
strong winds.

Currently... precipitation looks to begin in the coastal range as
early as Monday afternoon and will spread inland across the
interior of northern California Monday night and Tuesday. Periods
of heavy precipitation are possible Tuesday and Tuesday night with
more showery weather likely Wednesday. Precipitation amounts in
the Central Valley are expected to be 0.5 to 2 inches with 3 to 6
inches possible in the foothills and mountains. Snow levels are
expected to remain high through the event. Initially snow levels
will be between 7000 and 8000 ft but are expected to rise to
around 9000 feet.

Strong winds could accompany this storm late Monday night into Tuesday
night. At this time it appears winds in portions of the Central
Valley could reach sustained speeds in the 25 to 35 mph range with
higher gusts. Wind in the foothills and mountains could be
stronger with gusts to 60 mph or more. Winds of these speeds may
cause property damage and down branches or trees.

Rivers and streams are running low from the Summer but will
potentially see some significant rises next week as heavy
precipitation develops. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall could
present a greater potential for flooding issues along smaller
streams and tributaries... and in urban areas. In addition... heavy
precipitation falling on burn scar areas from past fires could
lead to debris flows.

Look for more detailed statements to be issued as the storm gets
closer. Continuous weather information is available from the
National Weather Service on NOAA Weather Radio or from the
internet at: http://weather.Gov/Sacramento.

I'm definitely looking forward to this.

I am ready for cooler weather and rain too, however I have a couple drill rigs scheduled for an investigation for a new bridge in Stockton early next week. Hopefully any heavy rain can bypass where we will be working.......

That is sick. How the heck do they do the arms? Tape/glue empty boxes?

How come in artsy Portland I have never seen this kind of display? Well besides that I do the Costco and ice cream runs and wifey handles the real shopping.

Hmmmm! It is almost 3:55 a.m. and I am not asleep yet. Not good. Well, alarm goes off in 1 hour. So, no sleep for me tonight. I think I'm too old for this. :(
