Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 4:04 PM PDT on October 10, 2009
... Heavy rains and strong winds possible Tuesday into Wednesday...
Moisture from the remnants of Super Typhoon Melor continues to
move across the northern Pacific Ocean and is forecast to reach
the West Coast early next week. Computer models combine this
moisture with a powerful jet stream and develop a strong storm
that moves through the area. This storm has the potential to
produce a significant amount of precipitation and wind for the
interior of northern California Tuesday and Wednesday along with
strong winds.
Currently... precipitation looks to begin in the coastal range as
early as Monday afternoon and will spread inland across the
interior of northern California Monday night and Tuesday. Periods
of heavy precipitation are possible Tuesday and Tuesday night with
more showery weather likely Wednesday. Precipitation amounts in
the Central Valley are expected to be 0.5 to 2 inches with 3 to 6
inches possible in the foothills and mountains. Snow levels are
expected to remain high through the event. Initially snow levels
will be between 7000 and 8000 ft but are expected to rise to
around 9000 feet.
Strong winds could accompany this storm late Monday night into Tuesday
night. At this time it appears winds in portions of the Central
Valley could reach sustained speeds in the 25 to 35 mph range with
higher gusts. Wind in the foothills and mountains could be
stronger with gusts to 60 mph or more. Winds of these speeds may
cause property damage and down branches or trees.
Rivers and streams are running low from the Summer but will
potentially see some significant rises next week as heavy
precipitation develops. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall could
present a greater potential for flooding issues along smaller
streams and tributaries... and in urban areas. In addition... heavy
precipitation falling on burn scar areas from past fires could
lead to debris flows.
Look for more detailed statements to be issued as the storm gets
closer. Continuous weather information is available from the
