The trade does nothing for Sacramento but shed salary in the short term.. We already know this. How does this help the kings in the LONG TERM? I am still searching for this answer.

you guys are scaring me. You guys are making believe that you actually thought GP was going to get some great deal done at the deadline! I mean c'mon look at the history of players he got at the deadline. Only one name stands out for me right now; even though he was an expiring but c'mon POT?????

Hmm i really don't know what to say about Petrie; why is it that we couldnt get at least a PICK in a deal of this magnitude! With the artest trade we got a pick and a prospect. And if u ask me, Bmiller+Salmons>>>>> Artest filler.

Our only hopes are (according to my sources) something is bruing about Douby Beno and Mikki going to Minny. I'm not sure who the players we'd be getting for sure, but I heard him mention the names Telfair and McCants. Stay tuned......

This has been rumored for the past few days, it's nothing ground breaking that hasn't been leaked all over hoopshype, realgm, or probably even sacbee...

We've been shopping Brad for at least two years. From all the rumors the Kings were actively seeking deals. My bet is there wasn't better offers for Brad. It could well be argued that we should have stood pat then. I'll guarantee that if no moves had been made, everybody here would be just as upset about that.

It's easy to jump all over the Maloofs for cost-cutting, but losing $25 million plus this season isn't chump change. As Voisons' article the other day pointed out, they've been cutting operations costs as much as they can. I'd bet it isn't the only money-losing business for the Maloofs right now.

Add to that the fact that the salary cap and luxury tax caps will go down next year and an economic albatross named Arco Arena and it's at least understandable why the ownership is financially hunkering down, trying to get through the current economic disaster.

Am I excited or happy about this trade? No. Am I shocked they may be settling for cost-cutting? No. They always had to deal with a small market, practically no corporate base and a crappy arena. Now they have a very hard-hit housing market, furloughed and probably laid off workers, and worst attendance in the league. You can ask for a better product on the floor, but how does it get paid for?

All I'm really hoping for right now is some hope for an arena and keeping the Kings in Sacramento (not a concern for many of you, I know). Then I'll worry about major improvement to the team, when the economy starts to turn around. The NBA needs to make a "market adjustment," too. The CBA makes that almost impossible right now. I'm not holding my breathe to see if players will voluntarily help out by giving up money already guaranteed by their contracts.
Well put.

I don't know why people are so guted by the trade. Im just excited now that are youngins are gonna get alot more playng time now. I know we didn't get any draft picks in return, but at least we didn't get any long contracts in return. And we do also save money.

Thompson and Hawes starting permenantly now... I think that's awesome!!! Im hoping Gooden comes of the bench anyways.

Ok we might not win, but at least it gives them exerience. I wonder who will start at the 3, Cisco or Nocioni?

What a bad deal, this all boils down to the Maloofs trying to make up for the hundreds of millions they lost from Bernie. The Kings are about to become the Clippers of the NBA with the new Donald "cheapskate" Sterling running things.

We can only hope that's what happens... But what should happen doesn't always happen here :)

Bleh.

And now we get to waive 2 guys, because Chicago wanted to do like Atlanta did last year and clear all the junk off their roster, and we never seem willing to decline junk.

But hey, our chances of a top-3 lottery pick in 2010 just got even brighter. And top-5 picks for 2011 and 2012? It could happen.

why nobody wanted Miller or Salmons here to make time for Greene and Hawes and Thompson. Now Green may still be on the bench but Miller is gone. Everybody we got is expiring and makes us players in the FA market this summer. That is essitially what most of us wanted any way. Don't worry about time being taken away from Thompson and Hawes. If anything this trade showed us that they are the future. We will get a good look at several big men that are expiring that will auditioning for a contract as big man off the bench.

That's cool then sorry if I came off rude
ahhh its cool, I understand how you feel though, you know as kings fans (and me being a kings fan when i'm from the bahamas) we're really not use to this under achieving stuff.

The kings are officially tanking this season....

And we just saved vinny's job and pax by giving them alot of talent to make a run for the playoffs... what did we get in return??? A thankyou and have a nice day

Good points.

Not the best trade but the people who think we could have done much better are wrong in my opinion. I was starting to think over the last few weeks that something like this trade was what we were going to get anyway. Play the kids, get rid of vets, still going to have a high draft pick. Sounds good to me.

Wow, I can't believe how fast these things move. Page 12 already and I just found out about it. Which makes me think my comments will soon be gone and forgotten, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

My first reaction is disappointment. I feel like there were deals there for expirings if we wanted them. Nocioni negatively impacts our future salary situation even worse than Salmons does. Yes his contract is frontloaded, but it's not much lower than Salmons salary and it extends one year longer. That extra year is everything. It's potentially the difference between being the highest bidder and one of the also-ran's. Is Nocioni really that great of a player that you want to handcuff yourself like that? Did Paxon steal your lunch money and refuse to give it back unless you took on his least favorite contract or something? And we still have Udrih and Garcia's contracts on the books so nothing much was accomplished here salary-wise. Shedding Brad's salary a year earlier is a small accomplishment when you don't have enough to work with to sign anyone significant anyway.

Even worse though is that we stand to get better this season through this deal which is just ridiculous considering our current record and the rest of the league. It's probably not enough to matter. Maybe the Maloofs are still convinced that they need to win enough games to get a mid-lotto pick. Maybe they think that's something worth striving for. But half the reason for trading Salmons was the logjam at SF and bringing in Nocioni doesn't help that at all. Greene needs to start on a last place team. Oklahoma stuck with Jeff Green all last season and he was mostly terrible and look how much better he is this year? What do we really have to lose here? Nocioni is a decent complimentary piece, but he's just a waste on a team that needs to rebuild just like Salmons was. I'd love to see Diogu get minutes, he was one of my favorites from that draft, but do you see that happening with Gooden, Thompson, and Moore in front of him? So from a basketball standpoint, the only position this really opens up is the C position for Hawes. Other than that, our depth chart is a mess.

I don't think Petrie is a bad GM, I just think he's an inherently conservative one. Conservative moves are fine if you've lucked your way into a Richmond for Webber trade. But that kind of trade comes around once in a lifetime. If you already have a superstar in place you can re-arrange the pieces around them until you find the right fit, but failing that all the mid-level maneuvering in the world isn't going to transform a midling franchise into a contender. That takes more of a longterm vision which I haven't seen from this front office in a long long time. Throwing everyone else's outcasts against the wall and seeing what sticks is hardly the best, most direct route to rebuild a winning team.

My other observation has to do with the economy. A smart owner would realize that this is a perfect opportunity to bite the bullet on salary in order to place yourself in a good position for the future. If the team starts winning, the fans will come. That's guaranteed. You can't just skyrocket ticket prices forever without expecting consequences, but for the most part people pay to come see winning teams. Even in a recession. It's something to cheer for, something to get excited about. So with all of these owners cutting salary to avoid the luxury tax, there's a golden opportunity for someone else to make their team a lot better by paying more now when nobody else will. Like Portland buying up all of Phoenix's draft picks the past few years. Now Phoenix is collapsing and Portland is poised to contend for the next 10 years. Surely people could see that one coming. I think 5-10 million in additional luxury tax one season or even two seasons is a smart investment if it's going to allow you to acquire more young players and draft picks which will help your team for years to come. It's disappointing that our team is one of the teams cutting salary, following the trend, instead of one of the teams taking advantage of the situation.

True it's not my money, but I think the smartest business decision is the one that gives you an advantage over your competitors. I think there was a real chance to come out ahead with the trade market this season and instead we went nowhere. It's mostly the missed opportunity that's so disappointing. At least we got a draft pick out of Houston for Artest. Everything else that we've done has been re-arranging deck chairs.

honestly I'm willing to give Nocioni a chance. If he can return to his old form like when he played for coach Skiles than I think we got ourselves something to work with. On the other hand if he plays poorly and steals minutes from our young guys than I will be disapointed because his contract is a little long and would be hard to trade (think KTv2).

what really sucks is that we could have gotten a first rounder from the bulls.. it could have been a protected top 10 since they will automatically be in playoff contention with that talent...

what really upsets me is that we could have gotten ryan anderson as some sources have pointed out... we get a young big to play back up.. oh well

would have wanted a bucks trade too...

This really isnt a bad trade. I would have preferred a draft pick instead of Nocioni, but basically this is the kind of deal you are going to get for Miller and Salmons. Look at what a young star player in Chandler New Orleans got. Nocioni also could be a nice salary to throw into a deal with Thomas and Moore next year at a big time player in a salary dump move for another team or ship to a contender next year if he is playing well. Immediate impact this trade has none, but for the future it could play out very nice.

wait.................

are we going to play the free agent lottery this year or next!? i dont want to get boozer

As far as I can tell this trade seems to steer us away from getting a big name player through the FA in 2010. Either we are planning a big draft day trade type scenario or we are going to attempt and build our team through minor signings like Tj Ford and Tayshaun Prince type players. Thats just what it looks like to me thoe, dont take my word for it.

I'm really excited for tonights game thoe. I actually hope we win...Without Salmons or Brad thats about 60 mins that is going to be distributed between Brown, Thompson, Hawes, and probably most importantly Greene. I hope we see our future come out with some fire. More than likely we will get stomped, but it will be interesting to watch.

This is my concern as well. They just traded bigger cap space in 2010 for more next year. This is definately a money move. Which means they will to be able to make more money in 2 years or hope the economy rebounds by then. The first is more likely and if the 27th cal expo report isnt favorable I can see them moving after 2010 season.

Oh really? Show me where these were offered by the other team.
