what was the last movie you watched?

Finally got around to watching No Country For Old Men. It was good, as you might expect. Not as great as it was made out to be. Which at least for me is also about what I would expect. But good, dark, and grimey.

And then...I almost hesitate to say it, but I was forced to watch some 2001 'N Sync based romantic comedy called On the Line? That was just painful despite the presence of the very cute Emannuelle Chriqui (in the role which presumably killed her budding movie career). Leading man was none other than...Lance Bass. Who is gay. I find it both upsetting and wasteful that a gay boy band hack has gotten to kiss Ms. Chriqui and I have not.

I finally watched A History of Violence last night. I'm still not as impressed with Viggo Mortensen's acting chops as everyone else seems to be, but thought the film itself was quite good.

This afternoon I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall and 2046.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was genuinely amusing throughout, but I didn't have any laugh-out-loud moments. I didn't necessarily expect to find it as funny as everyone else has, but I was hoping for a bit more laughs. I'd recommend it for fans of the other Apatow films, though.

2046 was absolutely beautiful, but a little long.

Atonement -- as expected, very good. Gets a little muddled with all the literary time hopping and whatnot, but hits a number of powerful notes. Challenges an audience though -- not a casual watch, and there's a lot of subtle stuff you have to catch on your own.

Day Watch -- and then, somewhat later...do not ever watch trash after you have watched a high quality flick or it wil look even more pathetic. Had no intention of watching this one after I discovered how bad Nigt Watch was, but forgot this was still in my Netflix queue, and so in it came. Still almost didn't watch it, and other than one hot chick who spent the whole movie dressed like a stripper, I wouldn't have been missing anything. Just as stupid, loud, and muddled as the first one. With the same constant shaky cams and flashing strobes because our "hero" you see is an alcoholic, and the director wants to inspire all of us to drink too. Glad to finally see Moscow destroyed though -- get so tired of living in the only city that gets wiped out multiple times every summer blockbuster season.

I saw atonement entirely because of Keira Knightly, I think she is the single most attractive woman in the world right now .. but I agree I thought it was pretty good, you have to be in the mood for it though ..

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly -- Oscar worthy? Um...not so much. Gotta love those french -- the unquestioned masters of put you to sleep cinema. There is a remarkable real life story behind this one, but I think it works much much better as human interest story than it does as movie.

I watched "the Libertine" last night...

good enough to keep me watching all the way through... but not particularly great. I have a soft spot for irreverent period pieces like this (Amadeus was definately in my top 5 all time films)... but this one never really delivered overall. Some good spots, though.

I liked it, too. But it drove my wife nuts. a good thing was that NEITHER of us had any idea what it was or about (don't even know how it made it on our mailing list)... whis is a GREAT way to start a movie.

But I enjoyed watching it like some sort of like a comic book (overly sylized as a matter of choice) but she was watching it more straight up, and was never able to suspend disbelief.

but like i said, I liked it.

Children of Men, The Proposition, and Team America: World Police are all vastly different films, but I love, love, LOVE them. Especially The Proposition, because of Guy Pearce's performance. I think he's horribly underrated (and underutilized).

Blow was... the kind of movie that I was glad I watched, but knew as soon as it ended that I'd never be particularly compelled to watch it again. I always think Depp is worth watching in anything, but the film itself was pretty flawed.

I've never had much curiosity about the Harold and Kumar movies.

yes, there is a bit of a spread in styles there, I suppose. I am actually in a damn enviable position... I went for several years without watching ANY movies when I first had kids and first started working, so I have a nice stock of movies to choose from.

(let me tell ya... going from being in grad school without kids to three kids and a job and a commute and PTA and ...and...and.......... i wanna go back to grad school! )

2001 was on TV as I was flipping channels so I watched about 45 min to an hour and just got really bored, so I paused it (DVR). I am watching There Will Be Blood now, and will go back to 2001 after and skip closer to the end to see what happens.





Edit - OK so I finished There Will be Blood - well acted, but the movie seems to wander a bit and never really grabbed me.

And the DVR was left on pause for too long and ran out of time while I was watching the movie, so I will have to catch the end of 2001 later....

Ironman -- thumbs up,no comic book fanboy am I, but this one was as fun as everybody said it was.

Bridge to Terabithia -- thumbs sideways. children's book made into a movie. I'd never even heard of the book until I started seeing ads for the movie, but apparently it was quite famous, so decided what the hell I'd do my homework. Notable both for where the story did not go as well as where it did. Basically a celebration of childhood imagination. Of course being a children's book means having children actors/actresses, the vast majority as a rule who you end up hoping will not survive until adulthood. But these were not bad.

Hush -- thumbs down. Old Paltrow movie fom the late 90s that I only vaguely remembered. Notable for some shockingly hammy acting from Jessica Lange of all people, and some absolutely idiotic character "development" which is beyond impossible to believe.

My wife rented Rails and Ties - a depressing yet touching story about a railway engineer who is having marital problems and their life is changed when he kills a suicidal lady when she parks her car on the tracks in front of his train. A Kevin Bacon flick.

The Ten -- Huge cast of people who are generally funny come together to make a film that is generally not funny.

Bubble -- Saw this one purely out of curiosity and was very pleasantly surprised. It was Steven Soderbergh's first (and, to date, possibly only?) of the six films he's contracted to make with Mark Cuban's HDNet company, and was specifically made as an attempt to get back to indie roots after making one of the Ocean's movies (12, I think). Tiny budget, crew of only six people, no professional actors, improvised script, shot on digital with natural lighting... in short, just about as artsy fartsy as it gets. Really engrossing, though, and at just 73 minutes, doesn't push the story longer than it should for the sake of said fartsiness.

Sunshine -- for those who like their scifi smart, this was pretty good (and reasonably smart...as long as you did not think too hard ). Kind of a near miss on mind blowingness, but not feeling the last 1/3.

I had minor elective surgery on Friday afternoon and have been on strict orders to stay on the couch/reclined and resting position for at least 48 hours.

Being a good listener , I took advantage, and my wife took our little guy to her parents place for the weekend to keep him from jumping on me and wanting to play while I was following orders.

Having always wanted to, and not the time or "space" with my wife (not her kind of movie) or son (way too young to be seeing those films), I decided to watch the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy in order (special edition extended versions, mind you). Watched the first two yesterday and the last this morning (some friends came over to hang out yesterday evening, and we ended up eating pizza and playing Wii until late at night).

So that is something like 11 hours of awesome films (683 minutes according to wikipedia) I got to enjoy this weekend. Just awesome. And it was neat to be able to start seeing how more things tied together than I remembered due to watching them back-to-back.





And I still say I made the right choice in the movie thread taking TRotK over the other two.

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou

Watched it for an assignment for a music appreciation class. Not a musical but the characters or background characters are found in situations where they perform or at least play a tune on an instrument. All music is done this way even for the background music. It's integrated very well, people don't simply burst out into unmotivated musical scores.
