Don't Make Me Use The Bat
As an aside, Under the Bridge was a good choice -- had kind of forgotten about that song or it could have been a contender.

"Under the Bridge" is probably not the RHCP single I would have taken, but is a good choice.

And D-Mass gets kudos, both for the Beasties pick and the Bill Nye avatar.

I may have some RHCP coming up I think you'll like...

And Bill Nye is the man...I met him back in 1999 when he spoke at a science teachers conference I attended. As a speaker, he's much more serious than on his shows...and he is one smart dude.

Great pick D-Mass. How can anyone not like the Beastie Boys? sheesh

Time to venture back to the 60s for a song that has been in more movies and TV shows than almost any other song out there.

Happy Together - The Turtles - Happy Together

This song can actually just make you happier by listening to it. I mean seriously...just look how happy they are in this video.

My next pick:

[yt=Welcome To The Jungle]IYRC4H64EFk[/yt]

Welcome To The Jungle - Guns 'N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

This more than makes up for missing out on Sweet Child O' Mine

Are you serious? This is not a happy song.
Um, I have to disagree. It is a happy little tune, and was one people walked around humming and singing back in the day...

Happy Together
Imagine me and you I do
I think about you day and night
It's only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight
So happy together
If I should call you up invest a dime
And you say you belong to me
And ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be
So very fine
So happy together
I can see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together
I can see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together

It was pretty much recognized and accepted as a love song when it came out. Reading the lyrics now, I guess it could be interpreted as a song of unrequited love or prehaps even some kind of a stalker ballad ;), but that's not how it was received when it was released.

Okay, mainly I was referring to the retarded looks on the faces of the band in the video. The looks are funny (especially the guy that looks like Jonah Hill), which made me laugh, which makes me happy.

I never really listened to the lyrics that closely, but I guess it could be interpreted in a sad way. I'm not sure about his voice being full of despair, that's really just an opinion.

Perhaps desparation is better? Either way its clearly about unrequited love, and during the fadeout "How is the weather?" seems to me a clear reflection that there is no substance to this relationship whatsoever.

Oooooookay...

I actually can't remember what I originally wanted to take with this pick, so I will instead pick one of my all-time favorites. A song that I played so often during my junior and senior years of high school that, fifteen years later, my sister still has this "my" ringtone when I call her. With my tenth pick, I select:

Portrait - Here We Go (Again) - 1992

On Digital Underground's The Body Hat Syndrome LP, this was one of the songs featured during the Humpty Dance Awards. In fact, I'm almost tempted to do a themed draft, like I did in the album draft and the movie draft (and, depending on whom you ask, the babe draft as well ;)), where all the rest of my picks are songs that used the Humpty Drums in them.

Not quite tempted enough to go through with it, though...

Clearly about unrequited love? Nope, sorry. Gotta disagree. And I was around when the song first came out. NO ONE thought it was full of despair or desperation. It was a happy upbeat song. Listening to it with 21st century ears may change your interpretation but I think you have to put that aside. We've become much more cynical, especially in our music.

Okay, this feels like a calcualted risk to me, but I have reason to feel it may be under some level of threat, so...guess we'll see whether the risk pays off:

Slither - Velvet Revolver - Contraband (2004)

Dark, heavy, filthy and featuring a great guitar hook -- just like a good rock song should be. :) This was the supergroup concept actually done well, and one of my favorite modern rock songs. This video really captures the essence of this one too.

Good song, I like it. Was on the boundaries of my list.

Still ridiculous that its only available through download on GH3 when its the freaking commercial theme song.

I used the direct link and that's what it showed.

EDIT: It appears as though it would eventually load now, but I looked up the group and figured I most likely would never have heard of the song anyway.

:p

I Am The Walrus - The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

I am making this pick for two reasons:

1. I love the song.

2. In protest to the atrocity committed by Jonas Brothers in covering Hello Goodbye. I am the Walrus was b-side to Hello Goodbye and it was:
a. better song
b. Lennon was allegedly upset over it and according to wikipedia:

"John Lennon wasn't fond of the song, which he called "three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions." His distaste for the song grew further when it pushed "I Am the Walrus" to the B-side of the single. Though Lennon had anticipated "I Am the Walrus" being the A-side of the single, Paul McCartney and George Martin believed that "Hello Goodbye" was the more commercial tune. This dispute fed the series of debates over single releases between Lennon and McCartney which prompted Lennon to say after the Beatles' breakup, "I got sick and tired of being Paul's backup band"."

Now I can't watch my tv for 5 minutes without that annoying Target commercial blaring ******* Jonas Brother version that:

1. Makes me isntantly perk up as I recognize the tune, followed by
2. Making me want to vomit ...

There, I feel better now.
