Malone fired

Have to be quite tone deaf to do this less than 48 hours before Peja's retirement ceremony.

Risking having fans booing and yelling at Vivek, with a generally pissed off fanbase, on Peja's night?

I'll actually be pissed at the fans if they DON'T. Because that's precisely how you time a move like this -- you put it somewhere hoping that your fans are easily distracted and none too intelligent short attention spanned sheep, so you can throw something else in front of them that they will feel compelled to clap for like sticking a *Clap!* sign in front of them, and then by the time they would next have a chance to make any noise, they will have just shrugged and moved on.

Sac fans might be too nice to go full lacob getting "we want monta chants"n boos thrown at him but who knows, going to be interesting indeed.

I hate this. For Malone's supposed faults he was at least someone to keep the positionless gobbly goo in check with his focus on d.
And the team seemed to embrace the focus on d.
Seriously this team got better through Cuz and d. Now we may have neither.

This is hard to determine who is behind this, but the factors are there:

1. All the blown lead that we have had this season, we lost at least 5-6 games when we had double digits lead.
2. Brick has mentioned in a thread that we would need to be 37-21 or something like that for the rest of the season if we we have a chance to make the playoff. Obviously, they feel a change must be made in order to keep that chance.

I am surprised by this move just like everybody, but I will wait what they do afterward before I make a judgement.

To me this is most mysterious Kings head coach firing since Reggie Theus was abruptly terminated. After Adelman not extended new contract (let go out of exhaustion more than anything else) Maloofs went gaga over power point guru Eric Musselman who because of DUI became fait accompli damaged, disgraced goods. He absolutely had to go. Then Theus was brought in as somewhat surprising choice having measure of Kings success (not unlike Malone) but eventually ran afoul of Maloofs meddling (who can forget defensive assistant coach Chuck "The Rifleman" Person high noon standoff). Then it was interim coach Kenny Natt and horrible debacle that followed (hopefully Ty Corbin doesn't do repeat). With air finally cleared after so much turmoil at the top Paul Westphal was again another relatively surprising choice but he soon ran into personality conflict with players, notably newly arrived DeMarcus Cousins. His departure led to "we are a family" Keith Smart era of continued Kings down in the dumps poor play. Then finally new beginning under new management with Kings fans genuine enthusiasm as Michael Malone hired as Kings head coach. Unfortunately it now seems, more things change, more things stay the same. May you live in interesting times...

In this Woj piece you find various details:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/sources--kings-fire-coach-michael-malone-061241211.html

-- management tried to interfere with Malone's hiring of a lead assistant. So back before summer league even. Corbin was Malone's choice, not theirs. So Corbin will be short for this world too of course. Yes men only need apply. That's of course the way it always works in organizations who's owners claim they only hire people smarter than themselves.

-- Malone is the guy who put the nix on the Josh Smith deal. PDA and Vivek wanted it and were negotiating withe Detroit over it. Hence Smith for more open court dunks and bricked threes as a smallball PF, because you do have to feel some sympathy for poor Vivek. He's still wearing basketball diapers and dunks on Sportscenter = good basketball. Also means of course Malone likely was JT's only protection from the smallballers. If Corbin cowtows, probably see DWill out there at PF against OKC.

So missing the playoffs in the west is a fire able offense. Especially when you are ranked 10 in talent level in the west.

This is quite the surprise. Even I didn't think it would happen so quickly. I think it was premature I would have at least given him half the season and some more time with Cousins before giving him the boot out the door. One wonders what's really going on behind the scenes. The real question now is what happens with Cousins? Did he give his approval? The only coach he liked in the NBA gone..

I go to sleep after writing a long post and even stating that Vivek won't tolerate losing much longer, but I never saw this coming. I feel pretty terrible for Malone.

This has got to be less about our record and more about the relationships between PDA, Vivek, and Malone. Perhaps PDA and Vivek expected a coach that jumped when told to jump and sat when told to sit, but didn't get that with Malone so they fired him.

PDA does not have the balls to do this especially this early in the season. This has got Vivek written all over it. The man behind the scenes. It confirms all our suspicions about who actually makes the decisions.

It's bad...
As israeli I was not happy with Malone for not playing Casspi (don't know now if it was his idea), as many other people here I thought it's time to use McCallum instead of Sessions... I never fully understand his rotations and situations when Reggie Evans is some 8 or 9 games benched and then playing big minutes...But still to fire him is awfully wrong decision. It can hurt team in many ways - as it will cause unstability, feelings that season is failure and overall lost direction.
Even if some of Malone's decisions were actually bad and wrong (and not only seemed wrong for fans who, let's face it - have limited information and knoweledge) - I can't see how the season could be viewed as failure and certainly as failure so complete that it requires firing coach after 1/4 of the season.
You can't say that 11:13 is failure as it's much better than last year results and no stars were brought here after Gay trade. Also it was achieved against very tough schedule... and if team does not suceed without Cousins... so it's mostly just situation for now: Kings are not very talented team if Cousins is out...
You also can't say that players are not developing: first, Cousing becames superstar level player and it's not right not to give credit to the coach... McLemore is certainly improved.
Malone is not very experienced coach and he probably made mistakes... but firing him seems to be much bigger error.

not that sacramento is a big nba destination or anything but i wonder how this effects the mindset of any future canidates given the quick trigger of our ownership/front office.

we get off to our best start in a decade with the players really buying in while playing hard and what do the guys in charge do? fire the HC.

Smart thing they tricked Rudy into signing here before this occurred. I actually wonder how Rudy actually feels about this (could it have a negitive impact on him?), Cousins at least over 5 years has been lied to to the point where he might be numb to it he's at least got some serious experience in this regard.

For JT it's just another day in the office. lol, poor JT finally a coach that requires his abilities and got great stuff out of him defending and he's probably well on the way out of here.

what the ****.......................... he was given a broken product last year and barely got to test out the new toy this year. i thought the FO was looking to build something long term? sheesh

Yahoo sports says Malone had a 3 year guaranteed contract at $9.4 million so he might not be feeling too bad. He can relax on the beach in retirement, become an ESPN analyst and make more $$, or go to some team that values his philosophy as an assistant or potential head coach someday.

No, but I think as a coach, part of your job is to manage the game. We can all agree Malone can really teach defense, but his management of the game is just not very good.
11-13 with cousins out and the roster around him is a success whether he managed games or not. And being a bad game manager isn't something to fire someone over when you have a bad roster. You give that coach a chance to get his star back and atleast get him a decent bench. Malone turned this team around this is our best record this late in what 8-10 years he's doing something right. How do you fire a coach 1 year into his contract who's missing his star player. There not 1 franchise in sports who is good that does that. You don't fire a coach this late unless you are putrid bad or the players quite on him. If you gonna fire malone for the record than trade Collison if tgat fool hits 30% of his ft we beat LA. If he doesn't play like crap vs det we beat them too

Also it's evident no matter who we hire josh smith will be here. People can think Karl will be the savior but he will endorse an uptempo team. Resulting in cousins defense going back to average as he tried to keep pace and smith getting 4 turnovers per game as we saw Saturday.

Now I belive the report Buchar made that we are willing to trade Ben/JT. Those are malone guys right there watch these fools trade them for faried or something.
