Oh, there is a more specific rumor that the team they are very specifcally guaging interest in with is us. And while it seems reckless to the poiint of insanity to acquire Zach Randolph of all people to share a frontcourt with DeMarcus Cousins, you squint a little and you see where our front office's little hampster brains might be churning. Offense is king remember? More and more and more at all times. Defense is never a consideration. And we do have a rebounding problem. And if you can get Randolph for the following package, which is not out of the question if Memphis is seriously blowing their 22-10 team up here because of money concerns, well all of a sudden you have the best (offensive at least) frontcourt in basketball:

Randolph $16.5mil

for

Thornton $7.6mil
Robinson $3.4mil
Garcia $6.1mil

-- they get back a lot of their scoring
-- a Top 5 pick to sell as the heir apparent at PF
-- and our ender (Cisco) to solve their end of season salary woes

We get a Cousins/Randolph/Thompson all offense/rebounding no defense frontcourt, then Reke and the fleet of Petrie special mini chuckers as a backcourt. It also gives a third serious talent. Maybe they are hopinh for the reformed in prison sort of angle with Randolph. that instead of still being a scum, he's the old reformed scum who can understand Cousins and try to guide him away from problems. They can share notes about that tiime they sucker punched their own teammates. On the other hand Zbo hangs out with felons and runs marijuana rings from his house, so ther is a slight chance things might not quite go as planned.

Would you do JT + Thornton for Zbo? Out defense probs will go down just a little our offensive rebouding will go through the roof but im not sure how Cuz + ZBo will go, im sure Cuz can adjust and play a style to suit ZBo. ZBo is also a very good mid range shooter but yeah Im sure Zbo would be good and he could teach a lot of good stuff to Cuz but I think theres bigger needs to address and our frontline of JT/Cuz is solid.

I wonder if Indiana would do a straight up swap for DJ Augustine (who has struggled for them) for Aaron Brooks, im sure DJ as a full time starter for us could regain some of his form and is a better playmaker than IT/Brooks/Jimmer if you combined all 3.

They would lose a lot of balance with Tony Allen being moved to the bench (for Thornton). Basically they become us, just better. But hey if you can con someone into believing that TRob can be a replacement for a guy who led them to the playoffs and to a 7 game series ... why not?

Thornton would presumably still come off the bench.

Basically if Memphis does this it has two models to follow -- the one when Gay was injured and they were still pretty good. Or the one where Zach was injuresd, and they were still pretty good, with Thornton being the new Mayo.

Oh right, I forgot that other teams don't have stupid coaches who don't know how to manage rotations. My bad.

How about the Kings doubling down.

Z-bo, Conley, Ellington for Thornton, Evans, Garcia, Robinson and Brooks.

That's just a trade checker trade. We aren't swapping teams here. ;) Memphis hasn't been proven to have any interest in moving Conley. They just may be too scared to luxury tax it and so want to shed an expensive contract, not the whole team.

I disagree. Sure we haven't heard Conley in any rumors, but that doesn't mean he's not available. This would give the Griz some cap flexibility and some young talent they can either keep or move. If the Kings aren't sure about Evans and his value then getting Conley with a long term deal makes sense. Better than letting him walk in the summer.

In a (mostly failing) attempt to come here as a distraction, I saw this as a place to find some ideas that could bring optimism. And I was right- I like the idea of JT+MT for ZBo. I like MT and JT, but neither inspires the greatest of hope in me and I don't think either will ever be a starter on a competitive team. ZBo is, and that's what we want to be. MEM needs depth and scoring for the bench, and a practical PF (at a lower wage) to spell some of their taxes. How about Garcia, MT, and JT for Randolph and Haddadi? MEM gets expiring money to bring them under luxury tax threshold, and they ditch a huge deal to get two more serviceable contracts going forward. I would then make a deal for a PG to move IT to the bench and make Jimmer the backup SG. Of course, the worry is you have to resign Evans in the offseason. We still have holes at PG and SF and less cap room, but much more talent.

I would be P*SSED if i were a Grizzlie fan and ownership was trying to dismantle a contender over financial reasons. Guess it could be worse, they could be trying to sell the team to new ownership who wants to move the team.
