what was the last movie you watched?

I also happened to catch Lucky Number Slevin over the weekend on the tube. I was expecting pure crap so I was surprised to find out there was actually a pretty decent story here, presented non-linearly in a mostly effective fashion. But still plenty of hitman antics like I was expecting.
Oh yes. That's one of my standbys. I really like that movie. Revenge, snarkiness, Ben Kingsley ... what more can you ask for?

Went to see The Adjustment Bureau. Meh. Not horrible, well-acted, just couldn't immerse myself in it.

After I saw this, went home and watched Inception. That's how it's done.

Saw "Battle:Los Angeles" last night. Not to bad for an action flick. Bad acting though.

One movie I really liked was "Unthinkable" with Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie-Anne Moss. WOW. It really blows your mind because its about a terrorist planting 3 nukes in major cities around the country and how far we are willing to go to find those nukes. I don't remember seeing it out in theaters, probably because some of the content is extremely brutal. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Watched MacGruber over the weekend. Better than expected though obviously not high art. Enough to make me LOL a handful of times. As far as SNL based comedies go this is better than usual.

Recently got done watching Unstoppable. Pretty lame movie. Last night watched My Soul to Take, even lamer. Horror movies these days are absolutely pathetic to watch, they are sooooo boring and have no creativity anymore.

Watched a triple header tonight with a couple friends:

Fanboys - funny little film, as a Star Wars fan I really enjoyed it. Fun watching the Star Trek jabs, too.
Skyline - Didn't know what to expect and left a bit underwhelmed. With no explanation of how or why, it just "is" - and that has to be enough for you.
The Tourist - very slow and deliberate movie. Predictable ending. Meh.

Unstoppable: Really liked this one, hard to explain why but it had this vintage Tony Scott (Top Gun/Days of Thunder) feel to the train yards where he makes you feel like you're in the "in-crowd" of the railroad set. And its only a shade over 90 minutes, so you're feeling like this train expert all the sudden, watching this runaway train event unfold, basically in real time as far as I can tell and it just works.

Get Him to the Greek: This one had me cracking up quite a bit at times but at other times it just seemed plain mean and at almost 2 hours it went on just a bit too long for a low-brow comedy. Great soundtrack both in the licensed and fake music departments though. I think if you can tolerate large doses of Russell Brand and Jonah Hill you'll like this but boy did it drag in spots.

An Education: More of nice little showcase for the lead actors then a great movie. It follows a high school aged English girl who is consumed, partly at the behest of her parents, with getting into Oxford. Shes looking for a release from the constant work and pressure of her education when she meets a older man. The developing relationship between the two of them is the focal point of the film. I had problems with the pacing and you can see where the movie is going long before it gets there. With that said I still enjoyed it due to the great performances. Carey Mulligan nailed her role and as always Peter Sarsgaard was outstanding. Hell even the supporting cast is great, just a all around well acted film. Its one of those good movies with a great aspect that makes it worth watching.

Let Me In: A remake of the foreign film Let the Right One In. Like the original the movie focuses on the relationship of a lonely boy and twelve year old vampire girl. Puppy love aside, this is not Twilight. Let Me In doesn't back down from what made its predecessor effective, simply put its the most brutal and depressing vampire movie I have ever seen. Being a vampire isn't portrayed as sexy or even really sadistic, instead this vampire is more of a sad drug addict. Forced into a horrible existence to survive. Its been a couple years since I have seen the original but it seems like a pretty faithful remake. The ending has been altered a bit, but not for the worse in my opinion, and the question about the sex of vampire character and her relationship with a older man with whom she moves to town with are left more ambiguous in this version. I don't think it hurts the movie much, and frankly I was kind of happy to see one scene omitted in this version. Like Let the Right One In its a very good but hard to watch movie, I'm just not sure why a remake was necessary considering its so similar to the original. I would highly recommend it, or the original, if you have the stomach for it.

Watched a few good movies lately.

Limitless, with Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro was an entertaining thriller centered around a down and out writer who finds a miracle drug that taps into your fullest potential. This movie had a few plot holes, and didn't follow through with all of the mini stories with the characters, but it was well paced, well acted, and kept me guessing and above all, entertained. This movie was fun to watch, and made me feel like writing a few to do lists when I got home...

127 Hours was a tour de force! Wow, this movie was awesome. I love the fervent pacing of this movie, the ingenious camera shots, and the vivid color choices composed brilliantly by director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later). James Franco was worthy of his best actor oscar nomination for his role as Aron Ralston, the experienced outdoorsman who made an innocent mistake, and lost his hand and nearly his life because of it. Based on actual events this movie is a must see for any outdoor enthusiast and/or lover of epic filmmaking!

Watched The Other Guys and Alice in Wonderland this weekend.

The Other Guys was a wonderful surprise. Best Will Ferrell movie since Anchorman, at least. Lots of familiar faces show up throughout and Sam Jackson and the Rock are hilarious as kind of a live action Team America style cop duo. For something I just watched because I had bought it for super cheap right around new years and it seemed like decent Saturday night popcorn faire I was delighted.

Alice I just watched because TJ picked it out. I didn't think it was as bad as some of the reviews but it was pretty much all about the visuals anyways.

Thor - actually not a bad superhero movie at all. EXCEPT IT WAS REALLY, REALLY LOUD. I mean, really, the speakers were starting to distort in the louder scenes loud. this is the first movie I can ever recall going to and thinking that they should turn it down a bit.

The movie was very clean for the kids, no bad language, nudity, or drug use other than a scene in a bar with some beers. Comic book action/violence is why it was rated PG-13, but I would let my 8 year old watch it. At home. At a more normal volume. ;-)

The story was typical not bad. Somewhat predictable. Of course you have to check your brain at the door for some of it, but that is to be expected for one of these. Just a good, clean, enjoyable Marvel superhero movie you could take anyone to.

And stay to the end of the credits.

Just came back from a late viewing of Thor. I must have liked it since it felt too short and can't wait for Captain America. Also small spoiler:
Hawkeye!

I suppose someone has written about Kick A$$ but this turned out to be far more entertaining then I expected. If violence and young kids swearing goes against your morals, forget it. The extreme shifts of language, hilarity, and violence has you bouncing around emotionally in a nice way. I even saw a couple stunts I had never seen before just when I thought everything had been done. This was the kind of movie that could have been a disaster but wasn't. I intended it to be background noise but I actually watched it. I don't think my wife liked it as much but maybe you just need to be in the right mood. It comes streaming on Netflix and unfortunately it isn't HD but in the end, who cares? Far more violence than even the worst but done in a way that usually was comic bookish so it didn't gross you out as perhaps it might have. I am amazed that such a story could be told coherently.

Picture John Woo directing kids.

Bridesmaids with my wife. Surprisingly she loved it - didn't think she would like the "Hangoverish" parts I heard were in there. Still a chick flick, but much better than most. Pretty funny in many parts.

My new projector came in this week, coupled with the end of the network TV season, a holiday weekend and lots of rain I predict that I will get lots of work done on my movie queue this weekend.

My wife and I are looking forward to more Michael Nyqvist movies, the newspaperman in the trilogy starting with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." I get them on Netflix. I am not sure if he's everybody's cup of tea but he's mine, partially because of my Scandinavian background. The fact these are Swedish movies shouldn't put you off as the lead characters speak English. I just watched "As it Is in Heaven" and loved it. A different Nyqvist than I expected given the afor mentioned trilogy where he was a bit the stoic.

My Asian wife loves him also so ..... make of it what you wish. Maybe he and the movies are just good.

He's also in "Arn: the Knght Templar" in a supporting role. The movie sounds like it should be magnificent but it unfortunately is two long movies edited to become one 2 hour movie. Doesn't work well unless you don't mind large plot jumps and some things seem nonsensical. It's in English.

4 of the 5 movies I have seen with him have enough action to keep most people happy but none of the chaotic action for actions sake that seems to be the rage in American movies.

Watch Crank if you want just action and no plot.

These movies are hilarious. I was torn an ultimately didn't pick up Statham's Mechanic remake. Probably will at some point when the bluray dips under $10 which is the price point I have picked up all his other movies at.

I don't know what I'm in the mood for tonight, I would actually like to see Hangover 2 but can probably wait til that one comes home.
