What about our 2 picks in the 2nd round

Entity

Hall of Famer
alot of talk about the 1st pick but for the first time in 3 years we got not one but two 2nd round picks. We are currently in the Lester Hudson PG range and Joey Dorsey PF/C. Would be nice if Jason Thompson fell a bit. Then you have project player 7'2 John Rike. Alot of second level big men in the 2nd round could be available.

Reik isn't worth the time and attention, don't know much about whether he still plans on entering the draft, but he really shouldn't.

I like DJ White and Nikola Pekovic (he sounds kind of like David Lee to me).

what about Demarcus Nelson? He's had a sub-par college career and is expected to go 2nd round...it'd be nice to draft a local kid. just putting it out there.

i don't mind a local player but the things is i don't think we need more 2guards, but if we were to get one what about courtney lee? doubt he'll be there after what he did in the tourny.

The possible 2nd rounders I like are;

DeMarcus Nelson combo guard/SG - If you seen him he is possibly the best 2nd rounder out there. Nelson is one of those players that when his shot is on he cannot miss. He plays decent defense also. If we are going off of talent he is a definite 1st round pick. He is a poor mans Bobby Jackson with the potential of being a Bobby Jackson.

Chris Douglas-Roberts SG/SF - quite possibly the best tweener in the draft. And he could slide to the 2nd round!? Either all the mock sites (except nbamock, and draftexpress) are idiots or they haven't seen the kid play.. Has great size to play the SG/SF, and plays defense. He can hit the open shot, or drive to the basket and score. Reminds me a lot of Brandon Roy.

Shan Foster SG/SF - Relies on the 3pt shot too much but with his accuracy he has no reason NOT to. Over 45% from 3pt. Another one of those tweeners that can play SG/SF and has the height/size to do it. Is a good defender, and a decent ball handler though not great. Has issues when it comes to driving to the basket so you will never mistake Foster for K-Mart, Corey Magette, or Richard Jefferson.

Sean Singletary PG - He is a pass first PG that can shoot. If we take a chance on any under 6'0 PG he would be high on my list. Plus he would only cost us a 2nd rounder. Singletary is a pure PG, and makes spectacular plays. But that's his drawback too. He turns the ball over a lot, and against good teams that defend he seems to get caught up in the turnover game. Has a ton of potential though, and I am sure his turnover problem can be fixed.

Taj Gibson PF - Excellent athleticism, and wingspan. Plays bigger than his size. Stats have dropped off a bit, but effectiveness has not. Gibson does not force the issue, which makes him more of a complimentary player rather than a leader. He could find a niche as an energy type bench player, or at best a spot starter.

I do not know about 2nd round ... but at least I think we should try Sasha Kaun ... I still think that this guy can be a nice and cheap big for 5-8 minutes.

I like Nathan Jawai as a second round pick...If he falls...Although I think a late first round team with no pressing need will take a flyer on him. He seems intriguing.

I do not think Coach K did Mr. Nelson any favors. I never liked Paulus, and thought that Nelson should have been given the PG duties long ago. I think that Coach K has a distinct bias towards players who remind him of himself (Hurley, Paulus, Wojo, Collins, Redick, Williams, Langdon); guys that are "scrappy", cerebral players who have a 0% chance of making it in the NBA.

That said, I don't watch college basketball anymore, and Duke is a big reason why. That team was poorly recruited, woefully unbalanced, and the beneficiary of far too many calls that kept them in the Top 10 all year. If that team can stay near the top of their field for most of the year, then college basketball no longer warrants my interest.

I want us to grab 2 of the following with our 2nd rounders:

Joey Dorsey
Taj Gibson
James Gist
Jason Thompson
JJ Hickson
Derrick Caracter
Earl Clark(if he declares, but if he does he probably won't be here anyway)

as far as guards in the 2nd round:
Lester Hudson
DeMarcus Nelson
Sean Singletary

Not another shooting guard! Other than that, I don't care too much. Undersized PFs seem to be a good value pick early in the second round. Joey Dorsey would be awesome but I doubt he lasts that long. Taj Gibson would be awesome, but I have a feeling he's staying another year since Davon Jefferson has already committed to staying and Demar DeRozan is coming next year. That Nathan Jawai guy sounds intriguing.

A few players that I like:

DeMarcus Nelson. I think he's very underrated. He was a pt in highschool, and was held back by injuries for most of his college career. He's very quick and I think Gary's analogy of Bobby Jackson fits.

Derrick Caracter. A big body and mostly low post player. Listed at 6'9" and 265. Has the body that could have problems with weight. Decent to good rebounder.

C. Douglas Roberts. If this guy is there for you in the second round, you have to take him. Very talented player that can play, probably three positions. He should be in the first round.

Ryan Anderson. He's listed in the second round and I'll be shocked if he stays there. But, if he is there he would be a steal in the second round. 6'10" PF that can rebound, shoot from the outside, score from the inside and is a good passer. Another guy I think belongs in the first round.

DeVon Hardin. He is really sliding and would be a good pickup in the second round. I'm surprised he has dropped as far as he has. Great athlete who's speciality is defense and rebounding. Something the Kings have no need for.

I'd like to see us nab Dorsey (and C.D.R) but they'll almost definitely be gone where we pick in the 2nd.

Two guys I'd really like to take are Derrick Low and Richard Hendrix. Or if Hickson or Hardin are avilable put them in for Hendrix.

Low could be a sleeper. Good shooter and passer. Also, I'd like Gibson in the 2nd.

At this stage it's hard to say who you'd like because we don't know who'll declare.

This draft is certainly looking extremely, extremely deep if it stays this way. Guys like Lopez, Greene, Augustin, Hibbert etc. could drop to the 20s.

I know we dont need another shooting guard but I like Richard Roby from Colorado. Kid can flat out play, I think another player would be Sasha Kaun from Kansas. I think he has the potential to be a solid backup center in the league for 10 plus years.

i want to get joey dorsey. i think he has the defense/athleticsm needed and he plays above the rim. hopefully he would last to one of our picks.

One thing is for sure, if Petrie decides to keep our 2nd round picks he will likely go for a swingman. He would want to maximize the chances of getting a player capable of playing in the NBA and at that stage, most of the "safer" picks are swingmen.

Thompson has slipped and might be available in the 2nd which is nice. I think Dorsey might have risen to the 1st on all four draft sites listed below. The others look pretty good.

Don't take these rankings so seriously, there really is nothing going on right now. It's all really premature until the pre-draft camp.

Didn't Taj say last week he is going back to USC for another year?

Davon Jefferson did, I don't know if Taj Gibson has confirmed it already but I expect both him and OJ Mayo to come back next year as well. Nobody wants to lose in the first round of the tournament.

That'd be dumb for Mayo, he's already 20 and a lock for a top 10 pick. You don't throw away all that guarenteed money for school, especially when you have a stupid coach and you're game is made for the NBA and not college anyway. Gibson should come out as well considering he's already 22.

I'm not sure if Gibson should come out, but all indications seem to point out that he's pretty draft happy, as you said because of his age. This is a deep draft class, and unfortunately for him it really, really looks like he's a 2nd rounder. But I agree he is a sleeper--strong armed, long armed, plays with intensity and can be a nice hustle player in the NBA. In fact, it's his physical tools that lend the most intrigue--but you have to wonder, will his rebounding translate to the NBA, because he's too weak and quite undersized? Is he another tweener? I mean, he sure screams Hakim Warrick to me, but I have to ask--what's his bread and butter? But I'm being too negative here--for a 2nd round, he definitely is a bargain, with that sort of athleticism and defense, and if we can get him by all means go for it. He's not the shotblocker extraordinaire we need, but an athlete that doesn't focus on scoring and does the little things (replacement for Mikki?) might be necessary.

I think that the second round is where you should really take a flyer. Players that come from big name schools tend to be taken before players that come from small schools. Sometimes big name school players are overrated and small school players are underrated. Which means that if you do your homework, you can steal a very good player from a small school in the second round.

I'm not recommending anyone, but I would rather take a gamble on a 6'11" player that was the star of his team in a lower conference than a 6'8" player that comes from a big name conference.

He's not really undersized to be honest and he's a good shotblocker. He reminds me of Kenyon Martin actually.

I like Jaycee Carroll out of Utah State. WAC Player of the Year. Honorable Mention All-American selection. Can flat out shoot the ball. High basketball IQ. Would be a solid second round pick.

From wacsports.com:

Carroll, a 6-2 senior guard from Evanston, Wyo., was named the WAC's Player of the Year this past season as he finished first in the nation in three-point shooting at 49.8 percent, was second in free throw shooting at 91.9 percent, and 13th in scoring at 22.4 points per game.

For his career, Carroll ranks fourth all-time in NCAA history in three-point shooting at 46.5 percent, 12th in three-pointers made with 369, and 52nd in scoring with 2,522 points. He also holds 10 school records at Utah State, including being USU's all-time leading scorer.

Kyle Weaver would be nice if he slips a bit. He kind of reminds me of Christie

Also I hope Devon Hardin keeps slipping as he would be great too.

Its the second round so I just hope we can get someone who can play in the pros regardless of position.
