Wells excused from Rockets Practice for personal reasons...

Rockets guard Bonzi Wells was excused from attending Friday's practice "for personal reasons," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Van Gundy did not describe the reasons and said he did not know when Wells would be back.

Wells' agent Bill Duffy also would not elaborate, saying, "We're going to have to leave it as 'personal.' "

Guard Luther Head also missed Friday's practice because of a death in the family. The Rockets did not know when he would return.

Wells, 30, has not played in the preseason, and has been able to practice in only four workouts because of soreness in the groin muscle he tore last season and then a series of root canal procedures this week. He did attend Wednesday's home game and was expected to be past his health issues enough to begin practicing Friday.

"I don't want to put a timetable on him or make him feel he has to rush back," Van Gundy said. "I know everybody has a first-game mentality with every player. I'm not in that mentality. He has to deal with his personal stuff first. When he gets back, we'll get him ready to go then."

Even before he spoke with Van Gundy about needing to take time off, he was not considered close to playing, and Van Gundy said Wells would not be ready to play "for a while."

"He has to be able to get on the practice floor for a considerable amount of time to get himself in shape enough even," Van Gundy said this week. "Right now, it's been a wasted (18) days, other than picking up some learning parts of it because his time has been so intermittent. It's been unfortunate for him, unfortunate for us."

Ah, quite interesting, indeed. Very little clarity there. Hopefully things can get going for Bonzi.

hmmm wonder what it is?

death of a family member?
something wierd...? (going crazy again?)

what ever it is, hope it gets better for him...

i know he's signed with the rockets, and i know he's all in the past but im still frustrated at him because he gave us soo much in the playoffs last yr, and he's greediness (and also his agent) got ahead of him....

Call it greed if you like... might even be a valid observation. I, for one, think he deserved the money he was asking for, however, and I put in more on the Maloofs for not paying than I put it on him for asking.

Yup, this is really bad news for us. The guy hasn't been able to do anything whether its his groin, root canals, and now some personal issues he needs to deal with.

But thankfully, Kirk Snyder has been phenomenal in preseason. He's probably getting the job to start which is good considering for the past two years our shooting guard has been a 6-1 david wesley. Nice to actually have a shooting guard who's bigger than the other team's guy.

Hopefully Bonzi gets everything to work out for him. But yes, this really sucks.

Def. agree about Snyder....

I've been a supporter of his since August 2004 or so.

I think Snyder has finally found the right situation, and is still young so the potential to be the future starting SG is there. I love his potential as a good athletic two-way player, and seperately as a quality defender.

Yes and the best part is we got him for free. We gave them a trade exception and a conditional second rounder (along with Shinn's favorite, an undisclosed sum of cash) for Kirk Snyder. I think we had the choice between Snyder and JR Smith and initially I wanted Smith but I'm liking our choice more and more. JR Smith camps on the 3 point line too much and doesn't play defense.

So the whole Bonzi thing isn't hurting us so bad now, I'm glad Kirk is really fitting in. All we need him to do his hit wide open jumpers when they double team Yao and T-Mac and to play some decent defense.

It's not hurting from the team to Bonzi stand-point, because the Rockets (if healthy) would be damn good without him. However, it is from the Bonzi to team situation, as referenced to in the article.
