Turns out that Whiteside has Attention Deficit problems and thats the reason he dropped. It explains his slow learning curve, but its something that can certainly be overcome. So even with this revelation, I'm still shocked he fell as far as he did. But happy!
I read that article and it's just shocking, not because Whiteside dropped this far but teams didn't do their homework on something as simple as ADD. Not only is ADD not an issue, it's a plus! A big, big plus! I still get the feeling that people react to ADD like it is autism. They are two completely different conditions. I'm not a doctor but I've done many research on it.
I just want to say a few things that apply to persons with ADD; first, they are ultra competitive. These are the guys who can't stand losing and do whatever it takes to win. They tend to go all out on the court, tend to do too much, and the trick is to get them to calm down and play within themselves. But I'll say it again, these guys are super, super competitive.
They are very intelligent and learn things quickly. I've often heard ADD persons said, "Wow, my IQ is at a genius level but I have ADD, it's ironic isn't it?" Well, no, that statement describes 80% of the ADD persons. The reason they have ADD to begin with is because their brains works too fast, jumping from one thing to the next. The issue is their focus, not their intelligence. It's not that they can't focus, but it takes the right activity for them to do so. They've been known to hyper-focus on something they enjoy doing. An ADD person is someone who put off doing the laundry while rebuilding a car engine for over twelve hours straight, skipping lunch and dinner. Once that person zeroed in on a particular task, nothing can distract that person. A firefighter once found an ADD person typing away a term paper on her desk, unaware of the smoke alarm that had gone off, the fire engine and siren out the window, and smoke all around her.
Lastly, a director who likes to hire ADD persons once told me: a normal person has an easy time with the easy tasks and a tough time with the difficult tasks; an ADD person is the opposite. An ADD'er is someone who can single handedly rebuild the company's entire network system but can't seem to properly fill out a timesheet.
How does all that relates to basketball? I always thought that an ADD persons, because of their nature, would have advantage in a very competitive, dog-eat-dog, high pressure environment. Michael Phelps has ADD. And I'd say he succeeded because of it, not in spite of it. I suspect a lot of professional athletes have ADD, they just dont know it. I hope Whiteside succeed in the NBA but I know that if he fails, its not because of a lack of desire, work ethic, or competitiveness. If he loves basketball, he will work at it. It's in his nature.
And stay away from the ADD drugs. It turns someone from an ADD infected competitive SOB into a normal person. Whiteside has gotten this far with his condition, no reason to change it now. Although I'd like to add that there is varying degree of ADDness. Some are worse than others, imo, the smarter you are, the faster your brain goes, and the worse your condition. It's is one of ADD's biggest irony, but quite simple to overcome.
