What do you guys think?

Edited to add text...VF21

1 NO/Okla City (17) 4-0 The Hornets could remain unbeaten another day or two, but this perfect run should come to an end at the Clippers or Pistons this week.
2 San Antonio (2) 4-1 Any loss at the AT&T Center is a sure way for this team to slip in the rankings, but not as much as if it had lost either of the following roadies at Toronto and New York.
3 Utah (15) 4-1 Surprised? So is the rest of the league that's watching the Jazz shoot a blistering 48.3 percent, while limiting its opponents to a second-best 41.2.
4 L.A. Clippers (8) 4-1 Brand acknowledged his numbers are bad for fantasy GMs right now. The team's balanced offense, however, has been good for the Clips in the early going.
5 L.A. Lakers (13) 4-2 Kobe who? Tinseltown is fast becoming Bynum Country. Even NBA.com Blogger -- and rockstar -- Flea loves this kid.
TEAM (LAST WK) REC. BREAKDOWN
6 New Jersey (9) 2-1 The Nets got it done with O vs. Toronto, but turned on the D to down previously undefeated Utah, which was held to less than 100 for the first time this season.
7 Cleveland (6) 2-2 Wins vs. Wiz and Spurs are very, very nice. Losses to Bobcats and Hawks, not so much … missed free throws or not.
8 Atlanta (29) 3-1 Sure it's early, but first place is still first place -- even if it is only in-division. And if JJ keeps dropping 30 a night, this team will stay there a little longer.
9 Portland (30) 3-2 Raise your hand if you thought Portland would be better than all four of last year's conference finalists. Not even Eric Millegan could have predicted this.
10 Philadelphia (22) 3-2 For the fourth time in five games, A.I. scored 30-plus, but the Sixers have dropped two straight after opening with three Ws.
11 Chicago (7) 2-2 A let down was understandable after the opening night blowout of the Heat. The recovery was important, as are the next two games against Central Division foes.
12 Washington (14) 2-2 The Wizards are 2-0 when Arenas scores 40 or more. He's the only player to eclipse the mark in the first week of the season.
13 Phoenix (5) 1-4 His minutes stayed the same, but when Amare got them -- and what he did with them -- was a step in the right direction. He pumped in 16 points in 15 minutes vs. the Spurs.
14 Indiana (18) 3-2 An ankle injury kept Jermaine O'Neal out of Wednesday's game at Washington. The Pacers have two -- vs. Magic, at Bulls -- this weekend before a three-day layoff.
15 Houston (12) 3-2 You knew it was only a matter of time until McGrady found his shot and looked like the T-Mac of old.
16 Orlando (16) 3-2 That 3-2 record will go south fast if the team can't cut down on it's league-high 22.0 turnovers per game.
17 Sacramento (11) 3-2 Brad Miller could be out for a considerable spell with a foot injury, but that might not slow the Kings if Big Nasty keeps playing like he did Wednesday in a win over the Pistons.
18 Detroit (4) 2-3 A 2-3 record at this point isn't much cause to panic, but when things aren't going well on the road, like last night, try getting Maxiell some more burn.
19 Milwaukee (19) 2-3 Win big, lose big. At least, in their search for consistency, the Bucks were in a game at the end for a change.
20 Toronto (24) 2-2 Bosh, three-point specialist? Well, maybe not, but after going 0-for-13 from downtown last season, Bosh is 2-of-3 this year, including the game-winner last night vs. Philly.
21 Miami (1) 2-2 Rough start, eh? First, a ring-night whipping. Now Shaq's on the bench with a knee bruise. Then again, last year's team started the season 2-2, too.
22 Golden State (20) 2-3 The Warriors get a mulligan on that ill-advised Monta Ellis pass when the team matches up with the Hornets again tonight.
23 Minnesota (23) 2-3 The Wolves haven't held a lead since, well, they finished giving back the 16 points they were ahead by vs. Portland Saturday night.
24 New York (26) 2-3 A road win at Denver surely is a confidence builder for the Knicks, but it might not matter much with games at Houston and San Antonio on this weekend's schedule.
25 Memphis (25) 1-3 Pau's absence is making a lot of minutes available to the team's youngsters, but it doesn't make the losses any easier to swallow.
26 Charlotte (27) 1-3 Limiting LeBron to 16 and holding off the Cavs is enough to keep the Bobcats out of the basement.
27 Seattle (28) 1-4 Initiative 91 may have been shot down by a wide margin, but Sonics games have been closer affairs. Seattle has dropped four games this season by a total of 14 points.
28 Denver (10) 0-3 The road won't get any easier for the 0-3, Kenyon-less Nuggets; games at the Sixers, Bobcats, Heat and Magic await this week.
29 Dallas (3) 0-4 The only other Finalist to start the next season with four Ls was the 2001-02 Sixers, who got bounced in the first round of the playoffs. But it's still early for the Mavs.
30 Boston (21) 1-3 The skid may be over, but games vs. Jazz, Cavs, Magic and Pacers could keep Boston in the cellar come this time next week.

I think the Lakers being at 5 is ridiculous... They've played garbage teams... Won 4 games all at home and lost the other 2 on the road... But right now the Power Rankings are gonna look out of wack... Because well... The whole NBA is out of wack... The only team that we expected to be up there is San Antonio...

i love power rankings, it's something i search for every weekk.. hopefully the kings will start going up :)

rankings about how the teams are playing now.
not how they are going to play

Sometimes writers seem to rank on the basis of what they think rather than what is evident; that is, I THINK the Dallas Mavericks are the best team, regardless of their record. Some guys go on who's hot at the moment. This writer seems to do a little bit of both: The Hornets are 4-0, so they're No. 1, but the Suns are 1-3 and they're up at No. 13, above a few teams with better records? Seems to me that you can't have it both ways.

BTW, does anyone really believe the Hornets are the best team in the long run? Seems to me that they're one injury (Paul) away from the lottery.

How come the King's never get any recognition.

Phoenix is ranked higher then us?

ESPN made it look like Detroit played a super pee poor game, but I think the King's tenactiy and defense helped them win...

Phoenix is ranked highter thqan us because they are a better team and started higher.

Quite obviously these ranking will hcange a LOT in the next month or so. lakers at #5 is whatever, but its the Atlanta's and Portland's in the Top 10 that will go poof.

you have to see this: the ranking of a team depends both on its recent record and play, and its overall perceived strength, the former of which is weighing more heavily. that is why, a lousy team with a short winning period will not be placed around the same spot as a stronger team with a similar record. only after that record extends beyond a certain threshold (this is probably very, very subjective) will the team change its overall perception and be ranked appropriately.

You forgot the tea leaves, the ouija board and counting the number of leaves on the highest branch of the northernmost oak treee.

;)

As much as I hate the lakers, the non-partial part in me will come out now. They have one of the best young frontcourts with Andrew Bynum and Ronnie Turiaf. They STOLE Turiaf in the 2nd round. Watch for them in the next few years and beyond. Anytime you have Kobe on your team you have a chance to win. Also having Odem as well is a plus. At the moment they have a good reason to be up there. If the Kings are to be taken seriously, they have to score like they used to and play defense like they have been. Once we do that, then we can argue with the placement in the power rankings.

the kings are #2 right now in the pacific division. not bad. not bad at all. and the team thats #1 (clips) we already Own. with a capital "O". i would put the kings at #6 in power rankings. behind the pacers, jazz, spurs, heat, hornets

Er...

As an aside, no team we have played thus far currently has a .500 record. I think several of them will before its over, but we're strictly middle of the road statistically, record wise, and we haven't beaten (or lost to) a hot or strong team yet.

No other team had to start 3 games on the road, while consecutive home openers either.

I do agree however that it's just too early in the season to judge anything. Carlos Boozer is the MVP right now, the Suns will get the number 1 pick (via the Suns) and the number 30 pick in the draft (via the Hawks!!!) at this point, and Ron Artest is pulling down 9 boards a game!

We have entered into the twighlight zone! Things will normalize sooner or later. With the exception of Ron's rebounding hopefully. ;)

How's that again?

EITHER HES GOT THE WRONG TEAM OR HES STATING THAT THE SUNS WILL GET THE WORST RECORD ALONG WITH THE FIRST PICK BECAUSE THEY SUCK SO BAD THAT THEY WILL DELIVER THE FIRST PICK TO THEMSELVES BY PLAYING SO POORLY;)

Exactly. Basically everything is flipped upside down in the league right now is what I am saying.

ESPN's rankings are up but are all screwed up. I think they were posted before being done or formated wrong. Only top three and bottom rung have actual numbered listings.

This is the Kings blurb:

Bibby's playing hurt, Miller's out and Muss has to coach under a microscope. But Kings are a healthy 3-0 at home, amid all the questions about their future home.

ESPN Power Rankings

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/powerranking?season=2007&week=2

1 (1) Spurs 5-1 November normally doesn't mean much to Spurs, but Oberto and Elson already have Duncan feeling good about the frontcourt help he's going to be getting.
2 (8) Clippers 5-1 I'm eager to see Clips' testing trip Tuesday to Utah, just their second roadie all season, because their home games -- no joke -- have been too easy lately.
3 (3) Jazz 6-1 Normally, we'd make a big fuss about Kirilenko's latest injury, but AK-47 has been only the seventh-leading scorer (8.4 ppg) so far for scorching Utah.
4 (14) Rockets 5-2 JVG has been saying T-Mac's greatest strength is his decision-making. Judging by T-Mac's 6.4 apg and Yao's early dominance, perhaps they're all in agreement.
5 (4) Cavaliers 4-2 No one in the East has a better record, but Cavs' losses to Bobcats and Hawks were a major letdown after their San Antonio breakthrough. They should be 6-0 or 5-1.
6 (7) Heat 3-3 Second half vs. Sonics. Second half in New Jersey. So make that two glimpses of Miami's ''on'' switch to go with two ugly home losses (Chicago and now Houston).
7 (6) Mavericks 2-4 After a four-game losing streak to end last season and another to start this season, Mavs have actually won two in a row. But they still don't look quite right.
8 (9) Lakers 5-3 Lakers have to capitalize on that favorable early schedule, but there's a catch: Kobe says it'll be ''January or February'' before he's at full strength.
9 (11) Nets 3-2 The only team out there to beat Utah can't exactly celebrate. Not after dropping to 0-2 against Miami just two nights later and losing Jefferson indefinitely.
10 (12) Bulls 3-3 Offensively challenged Bulls need more consistency from Ben ... Ben Gordon, that is. Gordon's wacky scoring totals in the first six games: 6, 24, 5, 37, 2, 3.
11 (22) Kings 4-2 Bibby's playing hurt, Miller's out and Muss has to coach under a microscope. But Kings are a healthy 3-0 at home amid all the questions about their future home.
12 (2) Hornets 4-3 The first 4-0 start in the club's 18-season history and being the last team to lose this season, just like that, are memories. Blowing a 27-point lead at Portland will do that.
13 (5) Pistons 3-4 Life without Big Ben is off to a rocky start: Rip's hurt, Sheed has more Ts (four) than Pistons have wins and you're even starting to hear Etroit jokes. As in no D.
14 (20) Warriors 4-3 Beating two of last season's 60-win teams (Dallas and Detroit) in the same week is nice, but Warriors can't stop there with nine of their next 10 games in Oakland.
15 (11) Suns 2-5 If Saturday night's 25-point, 14-board Amare sticks around for a while, I'm guessing Suns will say a 1-5 start was a worthy sacrifice.
16 (21) Magic 4-3 D-Howard has had some quiet nights offensively, true, but he also just went for 21 points and 22 boards against Kevin Garnett. In other words, he's doing fine.
17 (17) Pacers 4-3 Something to talk about besides that mohawk: Harrington has averaged 24 ppg the past five games after totaling just 12 points in his first two games back in Indy.
18 (15) Wizards 3-3 It's been just a so-so start for Wiz, but our first check of Arenas' rebound from the free-throw line is promising. He's shooting a tidy 92.5 percent, 49 for 53.
19 (23) Hawks 4-2 Joe Johnson scoffed when his coach called him an MVP candidate, but it's no exaggeration to say J.J. will get some votes if Hawks win four of every six.
20 (25) Trail Blazers 4-3 Dallas brought 'em back to Earth and Roy (for ROY) got hurt in his fourth NBA game. But tip your cap to Zach's Blazers anyway, with their twice as many wins as Mavs and Suns.
21 (27) SuperSonics 3-4 Sonics had to have that one-point OT win in Atlanta. A tense locker room couldn't take another heartbreaker after losing every close game in a 1-4 start.
22 (19) Nuggets 2-3 Nugs are in a quick hole to Utah already after becoming just the second team in history to open with three straight L's by three or fewer points, then losing K-Mart.
23 (16) 76ers 3-3 With the For Sale sign removed and the team yanked off the market, it's only natural to ask: Does this mean Iverson is going back on the market?
24 (13) Bucks 2-5 When you lose five of six after an opening night W at Detroit -- and when 57 points from my favorite lefty don't add up to a win -- you deserve a steep drop.
25 (18) Timberwolves 2-4 Of all the coaches feeling pressure already -- Rivers, Stotts and, of course, Isiah -- Casey's seat could well be the toastiest with Wolves quickly slipping under .500.
26 (26) Raptors 2-4 This November is already better than last November, when Raps went 1-15, but Friday's home L to Hawks was hardly an uplifting prelude to a five-game trip out West.
27 (29) Knicks 2-5 On top of every other crisis that keeps Knicks in the news, now Frye is backsliding further than the naysayers ever predicted, at 3.4 ppg on 22.2 percent shooting.
28 (28) Grizzlies 1-5 The good news: Pau insists he'll be back on the busted foot before January. The reality: Whenever he returns, it'll be way too late for outmanned Grizz.
29 (30) Celtics 1-5 It hasn't lessened the serious heat Doc's facing, but Pierce wasn't kidding on that NBA TV fantasy commercial when he promised 10 boards a night. He's at 11.7 rpg.
30 (24) Bobcats 1-5 We'll get into Morrison's postgame tobacco chewing later. First, we must lament Bobcats' inability to do more with resurgent Okafor's 18.2 ppg, 12.2 rpg and 3.5 bpg.

I completely agree. Very little rhyme and reason found here. He seems to be giving certain teams the nod because of their play this year and disregarding their seasons a year ago (Jazz, Rockets, etc.) but then Stein turns around and gives the Heat and Mavs a heavy benefit of the doubt in spite of their awful starts.

It should be one way or the other, dummy. This reminds me of the BCS...*not a good thing*

1. Utah Jazz (6-1) – The Jazz are off to a great start, but can they stay healthy? Andrei Kirilenko is already down with a sprained ankle.

2. San Antonio Spurs (5-1) – As topsy-turvy as the league seems right now, the Spurs are the one constant. Duncan and Tony Parker have been dominant.

3. Los Angeles Clippers (5-1) – Sam Cassell just might be the best post-up point guard in the NBA. And is there anyone else you'd prefer to shoot a clutch shot?

4. Houston Rockets (5-2) – Yao Ming is on fire, but its the "grit" guys that have Jeff Van Gundy excited. Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes have given the Rockets some substance.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers (4-2) – The Cavaliers are up and down, but as long as they have LeBron James, they'll be mostly up.

6. Sacramento Kings (4-2) – Kevin Martin is off to a ridiculously hot start. He's averaging 24 points per game and shooting 55 percent. No wonder the Kings let Bonzi Wells go.

7. Los Angeles Lakers (5-3) – Kobe has struggled in his return from knee surgery, but his teammates are picking up the slack. This is the most well-balanced Lakers team since Shaquille O'Neal left.

8. Atlanta Hawks (4-2) – With Speedy Claxton out, Tyronn Lue (12.2 points, 4.7 assists and 1.2 turnovers per game) has come through in a big way and helped the Hawks to their best start in years.

9. New Jersey Nets (3-2) – Jason Kidd's performance against Washington on Sunday night was sublime: 15 points, 11 rebounds, 18 assists and only three turnovers.

10. Indiana Pacers (4-3) – Darrell Armstrong has not only given the Pacers great backup point guard play, but also a needed dose of professionalism.

11. Orlando Magic (4-3) – Dwight Howard went through a four-game stretch last week in which he attempted a total of 25 shots. That's not enough.

12. Golden State Warriors (4-3) – Who is Monta Ellis, you ask? He's in his second season, straight out of high school, and he's cracked Don Nelson's lineup, averaging 16 points and shooting 52.6 percent from the field.

13. Chicago Bulls (3-3) – The circus is in town, which means the Bulls will play their next seven games on the road. The theme of the trip is "survival."

14. Washington Wizards (3-3) – The Wizards will be without Darius Songaila until at least January. Their big offseason addition is sidelined after back surgery.

15. Miami Heat (3-3) – Yao Ming took it to both Shaq and Alonzo Mourning on Sunday night, making the duo look a little old. How much will the Heat have in the tank this season?

16. Portland Trail Blazers (4-3) – Jarrett Jack is showing why Sebastian Telfair was expendable. Jack is scoring, dishing, and swiping – he's among the league leaders in steals.

17. New Orleans Hornets (4-3) – The Hornets blew a 27-point lead in Portland, and now they've lost three straight games.

18. Dallas Mavericks (2-4) – The Mavs broke out of their 0-4 start by scoring 119 points in Phoenix, and they followed that up with a win in Portland.

19. Seattle SuperSonics (3-4) – Win or lose, the Sonics play thrilling games. Five of their first seven games have been decided by six points or less.

20. Detroit Pistons (3-4) – Not quite the same start as last season when the Pistons raced out of the blocks and won eight straight games on their way to a 64-win season. Without Richard Hamilton last Saturday, Detroit was shellacked by 32 at Golden State.

21. Denver Nuggets (2-3) – J.R. Smith has made 12 of the Nuggets' 21 three-pointers. He's going to be a big addition on the perimeter for this club.

22. Philadelphia 76ers (3-3) – Threes are wild: After a 3-0 start, the Sixers lose three straight, and now they head west for three road games.

23. Phoenix Suns (2-5) – Amare Stoudemire's 25 points and 14 boards in a win over Memphis finally gave Suns fans something to be happy about.

24. Minnesota Timberwolves (2-4) – Four straight losses for the Wolves after a 2-0 start. They're getting pounded on the boards.

25. Milwaukee Bucks (2-5) – Tough week for the Bucks. They lose all four games and give up an average of 109 points.

26. Toronto Raptors (2-4) – Could be a rough week ahead. The Raptors are on the road for four games out west and will be hard-pressed to win one.

27. New York Knicks (2-5) – Quentin Richardson has been the Knicks' best player so far, scoring 19 a game on 54-percent shooting. (He's a 40-percent gunner for his career.)

28. Memphis Grizzlies (1-5) – No end in sight to this nightmare. This week the Grizz face Dallas twice, Sacramento and Orlando.

29. Boston Celtics (1-5) – The Celtics are waiting on all of that young talent to develop, but it's not happening yet. It looks like the Paul Pierce show again this season.

30. Charlotte Bobcats (1-5) – Emeka Okafor (18.2 points, 12.2 boards and 3.5 blocks per game) has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal start.

this seems about right...
