Ways to help Cousins keep weight down

jtt

G-League
I think the key to Cousins success is keeping the weight down. He can be a star if he chooses to and bust if not. He does not show signs of self discipline like some of the other great NBA players (Duncan, Robinson, MJ, Dwight Howard) so I worry but I propose that we give him lots of playing time. If he plays 35 mins a game in a 80 game season, he will be able to keep his weight down for sure.
Any other ideas?

Keeping him away from seafood might be a good a idea apparently. =p

Nope. Wrong. Losing weight and burning fat is a VERY simple thing. You DO NOT restrict fat intake or protein. What you do restrict are sugars and starches. It's all about controlling blood sugar levels and therefore insulin levels, and switching the body's fuel over to burning primarily fat as opposed to primarily glucose. It's really very, very simple. But you do need to eat fat. Just eat fat and protein DeMarcus, you will slim down very easily. Read the book "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes.

Wow I even included the smiley that time.

I know you were being funny. But it's quite a serious issue for some people, and there is a ton of bs out there. It's something I know a lot about, and therefore passionate about. I have no problem telling someone they are wrong even if they are trying to make a joke. This is something that is very easy to do if you have the right information. Calorie restriction is the wrong way to go.

No I understand, you're serious about it, but you still need to get a sense of humor.

I saw a clip of him in high school, he was pretty amazing with a lower weight.

That's the way it turned into eh? He may be gaining muscle if he changed his diet too IDK. He played 23 mins a game in college- he's gonna need to hunker down for an NBA schedule.

Yeah that does worry me. He needs to be able to play a whole 34-36 minutes, even if he doesn't play that many.

The reason I predict that he will be a star is because he has handles. The boy can dribble like a guard. That tells me he has good BB instincts and phenomenal hand eye coordination.

Err... Cos he's been playing in the league for 14 years and all the time hasn't lost a pound am I right?

Weight wont be an issue in my opinion. He will play with a huge chip on his shoulder, and having an NBA training staff around him definitely helps. And to everyone mentioning how many minutes he played in college:

Last time i checked, College games are shorter than NBA games regardless, so you have to factor that in.

To say the guy doesn't have self discipline when you don't know the guy is ridiculous. Give the kid a chance. I mean seriously?? We're already going here?

How about you let the Kings organization worry about his diet and workout regimen. On draft night Cousins said his diet will be better, because he'll be making some money.

Over analyze much? /smh

Keep him away from the State Fair. I swear you can gain weight just walking by all that fried food.

Seriously, tho, I know that the team makes a point of showing rookies how to eat. Nutrition is a part of a workout regimen. I'm sure they'll get him started right away.

I know they took some of the young guys to Dream Dinners, which has the fresh ingredients for you to assemble into meals. Its one option that is helpful for young guys that may not know how to cook or would rather grab something quick than cook. Nice for anyone that may be short on time, even once in a while.

It won't hurt to have access to the strength and conditioning coach and workout equipment. He'll be given a personalized workout regimen and he'll see temamtes working out.

He seems motivated to me. Only time will tell. But now he's going to get more personalized training than he probably ever has.

If he hires a personal chef who feeds him healthy stuff, no problem. Take him on the road too. I don't know why athletes who are serious about their sport don't do this. May I say, penny wise and pounds foolish...

Give the kid a chance? He has a good trainer to prepare him for the pre-draft combine. Everybody else came in in top shape except him. He ballooned up to 290lbs from his playing weight of 270. This is like showing up for a CEO job interview in shorts and sandles. That's why I worry about his weight. Remember Jerome James? You can have the best staff around but if no self discipline, you can eat your way to early retirement.

I just watched the ESPN report on DeMarcus Cousins from the combine this last weekend. You can find it on Youtube. He was "LISTED" at 280, and it was concerning to sum that he showed up at 290.

Let me say that again for the people in the cheap seats. He was "LISTED" at 280. Meaning on paper. Not factual. Coach Cal believes his playing weight SHOULD be at 275, doesn't mean it was. And I agree with Coach Cal's comment that you shouldn't just pay attention to his weight, pay attention to his body fat. right now it's around 14%-16%. It needs to be down in the 10%-12% range.

And yeah...give the kid a chance. Eating well is NOT cheap. I've been working out since I was 15, and the food it would take to fuel a 275lb-290lb body playing at an elite athletic level is very costly. The protein piece is what costs the most. A mix of a protein supplement, and meat. It also takes a lot of preparation ....aka prep and cooking on a weekly basis.

The kid is 19. He didnt' have an endless supply of money. He may have had a trainer, but he might have been eating big mac's because they were cheap.

No no no. That was all part of the plan. If he came in in top shape, he would have been taken higher. He wanted to come to the Kings, and the Kings only, so he had to find any way possible to make other teams pass. Brilliant move. Brilliant.

I care more about his endurance and ability take in 82. I think he should hit up some P90X and build up that endurance.

I'm sure the training staff are going to get him into weightlifting. One thing that seemed odd to me was that he reportedly had never lifted weights before (sorry I don't remember where I read this). He is only 19 years old, so it's not a big deal, but it was surprising to me because he is already so strong.

I don't think he needs to lift so much to gain strength, but weightlifting will be a crucial aspect of getting him into NBA playing shape.
