Watkins & Williams: Can they help?

And this unfortunately has confused a whole generation of Kings fans. That was a very unique team, under a unique system -- why they are still talked about.
Exactly right, Brick. That team may be the best passing team in NBA history. That's one of the reasons they became the darlings of the NBA - the team concept was infectous, and so much fun to watch. But it was an anomoly. The perfect match of skills, systaem, and ijndividual sensibilities that may not be seen again for quite some time.

But being a good passer ranks somewhere just above has a wicked crossover as far as key traits for most bigs. A nice bonus, particularly if the guy is a post player so that he can pass out of doubleteams. But not a core trait at all. PGs have to pass to be valuable. Bigs have to rebound and block shots.

Your right, no other team has ever sought out big men that can pass as a core trait.

So whats with no PT for Williams?

Sure he's got his weaknesses, but he cant be THAT bad compared to the rest of our frontcourt...Dude can board and block

Someone should ask the coach why KT gets minutes over someone like Williams...curious to know the answer.

I think coach has made it clear that players need to earn their minutes, and for JW that means in practice. Obviously, he has not been pulling his own in practice.

Having said that, I agree with coach's plan in regards to all but Williams and Hawes. Please Theus, play JW more, he needs PT to develope.

Addressed to no one in particular:

when Dahntay Jones saw time tonight it concluded for me that Williams was not being kept out because of unfamiliarity with the offense or the fact that he is young. I suspect he just plain sucks and folks can hold onto their beliefs based on garbage minutes and minutes against the bench players of the other team but I think it is being stated loud and clear that Williams main value is that he allows our team to play 5 on 5 in practice with enough bigs to be at least a minimum challenge for the starters.

No need to speculate, we watched him get over 5.5 hours of PT last year, and got to see that, per minute, he was one of our most productive players. EASILY more productive than KT, and most of it wasn't garbage time.

That he's not getting minutes, while KT is, can only be considered a political decision of some sort, whether it's trade value, keeping peace on the team, or whatever.

Maybe he's just not that good. Maybe there is some truth that KT is playing to "showcase" that he can still play a little.....nah, it can't be that. About the only thing that Justin does is rebound the ball. He does not, and I repeat does NOT play good defense. At this point, I just think Theus is trying to win games and feels that the veteran Thomas gives him a beter chance to win. As the season goes and we fall farther and farther out of it, I suspect that we'll see a change in playing time for the young guys....just not yet.

As far as Dahntay Jones is concerned, who knows, maybe its a chance to see what he does before KMart or Bibby return when a move has to be made. Theus did state that that he was short a SG/SF type guy in situations. Could be the best option in Theus' mind to win at this point. Jones does bring a little bit of defense and energy....just not sure he can shoot from the outside which is important from his spot.

I have to agree with you. It makes you wonder what is going on. I am of the type and because of what I know of Theus and am learning about Theus that all he wants to do is win. He is a rookie and winning should be his focus. If he wants a future in the NBA he needs W's.

He should have no personal vendetta built up or any concern about trades but I don't know how much the owners and Petrie talk to him and tell him what to do. In a perfect world, he would make up his own mind with the help of his assistants.

We don't know what is going on and can only speculate. We DO know that Theus has told us who would get the minutes on the court and those are the people who hustle. Hustling may win over skill.
