Vlade to stay with Lakers? (merged)

If the report is not true, I wonder what Vlade meant by this quote: “It is enough,” Divac told the Blic daily. “No, I won’t play the next season. I’ll work for the Lakers as an assistant coach and an international scout.”
Maybe he was misquoted.

There is a lot of reason to suspect that while he may not exactly have been misquoted per se, he could easily have been quoted out of contest. There is no indication when they supposedly talked to Vlade, who just finished driving trucks full of donated items to the relief centers in Houston.

I think the announcement is premature, to say the least, and considering the source, it's not reliable.

If you're kidding, you might want to use the ;) emoticon. Sorry, but it didn't look like kidding to me... :o

I do not know if the report is true or not. Of course, I would rather Vlade work for us, but that is just because I loved it when he was a King. In my mind (aka chelle's world), he always will be a KING. That did not change when he returned to the Lakers last season and will not change if he ever enters the Hall as a Laker. You'll not find me hatin' on Vlade. He has always been more than we could have asked for in a player. I wish him and his family well, even in Lakerland.

What's strange (assuming the report is true) is that Vlade is not only choosing the Lakers over the Kings, but he is also choosing Phil Jackson (who he never played for) and Mitch Kupchak over Rick Adelman and Geoff Petrie.

Maybe LA offered him a job, and we did not. But I wonder if Vlade called the Maloofs and said, "Hey guys, the Lakers offered me a coaching spot, but my heart is up in Sacramento. Can I help you guys out?" I would find it hard to believe that the Maloofs wouldn't immediately make a spot for Vlade.

I guess, as Randy Newman sings, he loves LA.

I don't see how this can be a debate over Vlade choosing L.A. over Sacramento.

Perhaps because some people will debate about anything?

;)

It has been announced BY THE LAKERS that they have hired Kareem Abdul-Jabbar "...to teach a few tricks of the post game to an intriguing collection of talent that can use a lot of polish."

Much further down in the article is this little tidbit:

And what about Vlade Divac? After returning to the Lakers in the 2004-05 season after seven stellar years in Sacramento, Divac spent most of his time off the court and in the training room.

Divac might return to the Lakers but reportedly not as a player but a coach. A Serbian newspaper reported Friday that Divac plans to retire and become an assistant coach and scout for the Lakers.

There's a pretty big difference between the Lakers announcement and a throwaway comment based on something a Serbian newspaper reported which was based on the alleged quote by Vlade on blic.com.

I'm not saying it's not true; it may well be. But until it's actually announced by the Lakers, I wouldn't take it as gospel.

Sorry. I'm really not trying to turn it into a debate. I was just making some observations.

Coach - No problem. :D

hoopsfan - Well, geez. Now how would anyone but a Laker fan know...or care?

;)

I wish he'd do it for the Kings instead of the Lakers. Good luck Vlade.

While Vlade probably had his most productive years in Sacramento, he has always had his eyes in L.A. with the Lakers. I always knew he'd go back and end his career there. Vlade is a welcome addition to the Lakers' coaching staff.

Im sure glad you have the ear of Vlade and know his true inner intentions.

I dont know if anyone other then Vlade and his family and closest friends really can make the statement you just made.

Lamar_Odom ...

So you've heard something OTHER than the stuff based on the report that orginated on blic.com?

Sorry, but while it might end up being true, that website has about a 50% accuracy rating...

I think I'll wait and see what Vlade and/or the Lakers have to say in the American media.

Nothing you or any other Laker fan (and I'm not directly this at hoopsfan) has to say is going to change my feelings, etc. about Vlade. I find it humorous that a lot of you are jumping back on his bandwagon after the years of badmouthing him because his uniform was different.

I'm not trying to change anyone's feelings about Vlade. You guys can keep your memories. And you're right - the Lakers have not made an announcement regarding him joining the coaching staff. Based on that released though, it appears that Vlade wants to join the Lakers from a coaching standpoint.

Whatever...

As far as I'm concerned, what you're doing right now is tantamount to trolling.

"Nanner, nanner, nanner... Vlade likes LA best."

Give it a rest.

Vlade's salary may be part of an impending trade. It's fishy that he's announced retirement, but hasn't filed the papers with the league office. Teams now know that if he's traded prior to 9/30 and he retires, they don't have to pay his salary. Maybe the Lakers have a deal worked out with them that if he does this, they'll give him a job.

Lamar, check your PMs, homelincolntowncar.

From today's Sacramento Bee State Final, Sports section, page C3 (I couldn't find it on the website):

NBA NOTES

Still no Divac decision - Center Vlade Divac remains an unknown in Laker plans, although a decision on his status could be extended beyond a Friday deadline, Divac's agent said.

Divac, 37, recently was quoted by a Serbian newspaper as saying he would retire, but agent Marc Fleisher said Divac had been vacillating almost daily. The Lakers have until Friday to exercise a one-year, $5.4 million option on Divac or buy h im out for $2 million. The Lakers also could buy out Divac and then try to re-sign him for about $1.1 million, if he wants to play.

"My guess at this time is he's going to see how his health is and then make his decision," Fleisher said.

Training camp begins Tuesday in Honolulu.

Vlade is waiting on what the Lakers wants to do, it appears. I wouldn't mind him playing one more season, I think he can still play if healthy.

It's not like he could get much slower...

;)

Any news on whether he's in Hawaii with the team?

No, but Scottie Pippen is there wearing purple and gold (or is it yellow?). Things surreal as normal in Lakerville.

You may get jumped around here if you call it yellow instead of gold. Watch out.
