USing our MLE

How do the MLE rules work... Can we sign bonzi without using the MLE because he is on our team? and it would just be a contract extension? or would we have to sign bonzi with the MLE... I hope we dont have to use MLE... because we need a back up PG but I dont want to loose BOnzi

Joel isn't signing for the MLE. He said he wants to stay in PDX. If he doesn't want to stay in Portland than there will be teams with cap room that need a center begging him to play for them like Toronto, Chicago, Atlanta...

I don't know. I don't see Toronto getting him. They need a PG first and foremost, and are preparing to give a max deal to Bosh. Paying big money to a Joel might not be in their best interest. Don't forget they have a smart GM now.

Atlanta, maybe, but I don't know. It sounds like to me they are going to pay big $$$ to Al Harrington. Blowing the rest of their capspace may be a bad idea.

Chicago, they already have Tyson Chandler who is basically is the same type of player, and they are paying him over 60 million dollars over the next 6 years. I see them needing to address the post offensively to fill the major void left in the Eddy Curry trade. I think Nene ends up here.

Sure he could end up in one of those places, but I don't think it would be sound for these particular teams to drop dough on the guy.

As for Portland, they are apparently in financial peril, don't have his Bird rights, and he has basically said that he wants to go to a place where the focus is on winning. That isn't Portland. I expect a number of teams to offer him the full MLE, we could be one of them.

Plus doesn't it always seem like we pick up players that seem to destroy us everytime we play against them?

Atlanta's going to let Harrington walk, book it. The guy is a tweener, bad on D, and they have players that already play his position(Williams, Smith). They don't have a starting center and Joel would start for them+be another shotblocker. They also have other expiring contracts anyways so even if they did re-sign Harrington they'd still have room.

NOK will need a center next year and in the future because PJ brown is getting old. They're under the cap too right? I bet they try to grab Joel.

What is MLE? Do we get $5M to use in the offseason? Do other teams get more or less then us? Why do we get the MLE? Is this $ over the salary cap of roughly $60M to use on obtaining free agents and/or paying your guys to stay that are free agents? Sorry for the questions, I've seen this term used before and have no idea what it means, why we get it, etc.

MLE is Mid LEvel Exeption. Its for teams who are over the cap (and cant sign big free agents) but they can make a small exception (5-6mil) to spend on 1 or a couple of players

Aren't we under the cap this season, but will be over it next season? Thanks for explaining this to me. I really think we need to resign Bonzi 1st and go the trading route with KT, Miller, and Corliss. It will be hard to unload KT with his big contract, but Corliss's expiring contract is tempting to teams. I'd really like to see if we can get Camby and Edwardo N., and Francisco Elson from Denver for that group. Nene would also be very nice depending on whether Denver would give him up, they'd probably want our KMart and/or Cisco to do it though trading young talent for young talent, it would be very hard to do because I like our 2 guys a lot and think they have bright futures and Nene is coming of major knee surgery.

We need big guys in a huge way as many teams have 3-5 7' or near 7 footers and we have 1 that plays smaller than his size. We need at least 1 starting and 1 off the bench. Both of these guys are very athletic and can play either PF or C.

Well no we are still over the cap. It was 49mil this year and is gonna go up this yr, but i dont know to wat. Most teams are over the cap actually. lol. So it defeats the purpose. only a few teams are actually free agent seekers.

The best part is, I just learned that since Bonzi is on our team, we can sign him. This is great... we will still have our MLE to go after other players i.e. Joel Pryz :)... If we dont resign bonzi i will be mad.... ROn and Bonzi are great back quart defenders....

I absolutely love Bonzi. I know that he isn't a great shooter at the SG position, but man is he a warrior and give you 200% or more. He and Artest are absolutely lethal to creating mismatches in our favor. I love to see them together, but we do need some better shooters at the very least off the bench. Brad does this for us and I love SAR, but I think all we need is a good big C playing goalie and some more shooting off the bench (look at what the Spurs hit you with off the bench) and we will be good. I'm all for keeping this new group together and letting them know that they are the future and will just need to work on jelling as the Kings are doing now, although they don't have all the pieces yet.

I'm kind of excited to see how Monia works out considering Petrie had him in his radar and missed out on drafting him outright, you know that Monia was the main part of the Skinner trade seeing how Vitaly gets little playing time other than garbage time. It will be interesting to see how Kmart, Cisco, and now Monia play together next year. I do however, think that we could trade one of them away in with a Miller, KT, Corliss trade if needed to land KG or option B a Denver Camby, Elson/Nene, Edwardo, other player trade.

I'd like to see the Kings get Anthony Johnson with the MLE. He's got some history with us (we drafted him) and he'd be a great pg off the bench. Its much easier to grab a pg with the MLE than it is a big man.

He's not a free agent though right?

If the Kings use the MLE, here's the order in which I'd go after people. I didn't bother with people who will obviously be out of the MLE price range, although the names at the top of my list are definitely a stretch.

1. Mike James
2. Nene
3. Nazr Mohammed
4. Chris Wilcox
5. Speedy Claxton
6. Joel Pryzbilla
7. Marcus Banks
8. DJ Mbenga
9. Francisco Elson
10. Mario Kasun

Subject to change.

I agree but he wont want to be a back up... He wants alot of $$
That'd be a problem because everyone knows that Bibby is our PG, also Kmart is our future and we have a very good tough guy in Bonzi at the SG position with Cisco backing up these positions and Ron at SF, so this new guy would have to be bench, but he would give Bibby some well deserved rest on the bench when he comes in. I'm much rather use that $ on Joel Prizbilla if we can get him or Nene. A decent PG isn't as rare as you might think. A lot of 6 footers are out there that have good ball skills and a decent shot, when you are talking about athletic 7' footers is where they become few and far between and very valuable. We have Hart this year, so we are happy with little. I would have loved to have kept House and don't know why we didn't but it's over.

We didn't keep House because he wasn't a playmaker or defender, Hart was supposed to be that along with some scoring, but has only shown some of that on the year. Defense has been his best attribute so far.

Hey don't laugh but what about Raul Lopez. Last I heard got cut from the Grizzlies in 05/06. The guy can shoot the three and set up the offense. Nothing spectacular...but wouldn't hurt. I also wouldn't mind having BJax come back.
