Tyreke is going to get a rest

Obviously we don't know. If the team was involved in the decision, and this is just a leak, I have no problem with it.

But I'm concerned about the wording: "Were bout to shut @thetyrekeevans down! It's 4 ya own good!"

"WE" are about to shut Tyreke Evans down?

Followed by: "Just got done having a talk wit my brother @thetyrekeevans. It's done! He's out for a while."

The implication is that Team Tyreke made the decision, and called down the order to Tyreke. Now that may not be what Doc Evans wanted to convey, but it seems to be the easiest reading. Anyway, the main concern on my end isn't that the news came from Team Tyreke, it's that the decision may have come from Team Tyreke without the consent of the team and team doctors. I don't know that. I'm just concerned that that may be what happened.

according to Jason Jones blog they dont.

The Kings say they don't know what the case is because Tyreke hasn't told them he's not going.

Here's what Kings president Geoff Petrie said:

"Whatever needs to be done needs to be done in the best fashion possible. We'll see what (Monday) morning brings. It really comes down to if the player says he can't go."

Well, that's kind of what I was afraid of.

Well, that's kind of what I was afraid of.

Do any of these guys actually speak for themselves? Or is it always through an agent, manager, or family/friend.

Something's been wrong with Tyreke pretty much all year. It's not all physical, but it's possible the majority of his struggles are. I hope Boogie focuses on staying on the court. Winning is a lot less important than getting the *right* experience out on the court. Greene, JT, and Casspi also have a great opportunity to make a statement here.

Question: How did Tyreke come to believe that he had a stress fracture - as he told Jason Jones last week?
Apparently this was communicated to Jason as fact and not as speculation (as in "the doctor said that a stress fracture would explain why the treatments haven't been successful"). So what was said by what medical professional that led him to believe this? And who helped him interpret the information he was given?
When I was Tyreke's age, I badly sprained my ankle. Somehow I got confused from everything the doctor told me that I came to believe my ankle was broken. It's embarrassing now to think of how confused I was, but, really, at 20 years of age, I probably still thought I could be the President of the United States if I wanted to be.
Anyway, my point is that Tyreke is still a boy in many ways. A boy in a man's body. For him to believe that he had a stress fracture tells me that a) he was confused, and b) Team Tyreke let him down (or was equally confused).

I think this is part of the case of asking those you trust for their opinion. It has been well documented that "team Tyreke" is a very big part of Tyreke's life, he probably told them what is going on and they probably told him well maybe you should rest. He probably thought well maybe you are right. Team Tyreke being team Tyreke probably think oh well we made this decision! I do believe reading in the bee or some blog Sunday morning that the kings are waiting for tyreke to tell them he can't play, so he probably made the decision.

People aren't making anywhere near a big enough deal of this now. When relatives of players announce player status (on Twitter, no less) and the GM really has no idea, that is the sign of a full-on crisis. The player and the GM are no longer talking to each other.

I can think of only one thing the Kings could do to hurt ticket sales more than this: Announcing this is their last season here.

The lack of comments on this on sacbee can only indicate one of two things: Either people don't care, or sacbee's commenting system is broken. At this point, I'm tending to think it's the latter.

I have no reason to attend another Kings game this year. Was thinking about it, but not any more. They can keep their worthless scrap of paper.

There is now only one reason left to go to a Kings game, and that is to root for the opponent. Why bother?

It does seem a little alarming and doesn't say much about Tyreke's relationship with his employer. I'm not familiar with how things work in the NBA but it seems to me that this is the type of thing that would generally be (or at least should be) discussed with coaches and the GM before making any announcements.

I don't get some of the comments on this board. Does anyone really think that the first person that Tyreke is going to discuss the matter with is Petrie? Of course he's going to discuss it with his family and friends before he discusses it with his employer. If you have an injury that is going to prevent you from doing your job, are you going to talk to your employer first, or your wife and family first? Of course, the latter. And then when you're straight about whether you really want to take a break, then you discuss it with your employer.

I haven't seen anyone say he should have discussed it with Petrie first. What people are saying is that he should have discussed it wit Petrie before making announcements about it. It's not about who he discussed it with first, it's about announcing that you're taking time off before even discussing it with your employer. Apparently he didn't discuss it with anyone on The Kings' staff before making the announcement. That seems highly irregular to me.

This really.

People are again getting nutty. Tyreke's brother spoke out of turn. So what. Plantar fasciatis is a pain injury. The trainers might say no you can't go with something like a partially torn knee ligament because you might tear it the rest of the way. But with plantar fasciatis its up to the player, what can he endure. If the same thing had been announced today rather than leaked by his brother nobody would have said a peep. And you know what? 10 years ago it would have been. Heck even 5 years ago it would have been. Its the rise of the social media age, accompanied by everyone wanting to update you every time they pick their nose or fart, that is to explain for this "crisis". Guy talked it over with his family, decided to shut it down. Not such a crisis. We as fans just get inserted earlier in the decisionmaking timeline than we once would have. Today Tyreke will go in, tell the coach and GM that he can't go, they'll makie the official announcement, and everything will proceed as it always has. The only difference is Tyreke's family members having an instant gratification media outlet in Twitter to leak the news first.

I have to disagree. A player is planning to sit out games, meanwhile his employers are completely in the dark about it. Seems unacceptable to me. We're not talking about a cashier planning to take the weekend off because they have a cold without telling their employer. There's lots of money at stake here as well as the team's ever plummeting reputation. The guy is paid millions to do one thing, play basketball. Given that, I think it's reasonable to expect that if he's planning to take time off (paid time off, BTW) from playing basketball that the least you could expect is that he would the people playing him millions know ASAP.

Although the situations are pretty different, I can't help thinking about the Kings of Old and how well they clicked during the time Webber was out rehabbing his knee. In fact, they were doing so well that it really messed things up when Adleman eventually forced C-Webb back into the lineup. So what do you think? Without a "big dog," is it likely that this team might start playing more like a "pack"?

If Tyreke tells them today, that's ASAP for me. What is ASAP for you? Ten seconds after he discusses it with his family? Or would a day suffice? Do you ever mull things over after discussing a big issue with the family? A lot of people go back and forth several times before they come to any conclusion. Maybe Tyreke's brother spoke out of turn. Who knows?

Seems like you're really searching for an argument here when there is none.

Westphal was asked about Tyreke after the Heat game and his response was "Well, how did he look?" implying (and later directly stating) that he's not looking like himself out on the court because of the foot and that something needed to be done to get him playing like himself. Tyreke isn't taking vacation days here. He's resting an injury. And the team already KNOWS that he was likely going to need to rest that injury. No one is being caught completely off guard.

And in a league where guys are "game time decisions" on a regular basis due to injuries it isn't as if Westphal and Petrie are being thrown for a loop. They change the lineup, roll the ball out and try and get a win.

And MizzouKing, I DO think this will help the team. Tyreke Evans absolutely CAN be a franchise player for the Kings but the injury is not letting him impose his will the way he did last year. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's hurting the team more than helping at this point, but Tyreke is trying to play his game (which is ball dominant) when the plantar fasciitis isn't letting him. I don't know if it will lead to more team basketball, but I believe guys will step up to fill the void left by Evans.

It means more shots and more touches for everyone else. We'll see how they use them

Reading this makes me wonder why you don't just leave 'Arena' off your byline. Come on, cheer up.

Pretty much right when he made the decision, or was considering it serioulsy. That would be the time to let them know that you're thinking about taking some time off to rest/heal, not the day after they already find out about via your brother's twitter announcement.

Clearly, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s something you should be in constant communication with your coach/GM on.

And the team already KNOWS that he was likely going to need to rest that injury.

They obviously didn’t know that. If they had, they would have made the call to rest him by now.

I’m not trying to make this out to be the end of the world or anything, but I do think it’s a little concerning when you have a player who’s considering sitting out multiple games and his coach and GM are clueless about it.

And my argument is that they weren't clueless about it. They know what's ailing him, they know that rest is the only way to really help alleviate it, the coach hinted at him needing to rest and my guess is the team even told him that only he could decide whether or not to rest it.

So Tyreke assessed his play, talked it over with his family/advisors and decided that yes, he should rest. What's the big deal? That his brother (not Tyreke mind you, his brother) "tweeted" the news online before Kings management had been told? Is that really such a big deal?

With injuries like this it is ALWAYS the player's call because only they can say how much pain or discomfort they are in and whether they can play through it. If anything, I'm surprised it took Tyreke this long to take some time off and rest his foot.

Do you seriously think this hasn't been discussed, ad nauseum, in and around the Kings for weeks?

People are again getting nutty. Tyreke's brother spoke out of turn. So what.

In what I truly believe to be my least nutty frame of mind, it's not about Tyreke's brother speaking out of turn. It's about whether Tyreke's brother is unilaterally making decisions for Tyreke on team-related issues.

Here is my ideal flow chart of how this sort of thing should ideally go down, with the ultimate decision being made at the top:

--- Tyreke + Coaching Staff + Medical Staff + Front Office ---

--- Tyreke + Team Tyreke + Other Personal Counselors ---

Here's the (perhaps inaccurate) impression of how it seems to have gone down from Twitter accounts:

That's what I'm worried about, not whether Doc spoke out of turn.

Since I don't work for The Kings, I can't awnser that question. All I can go on is Petrie's reaction, which seemed to indicate that they weren't aware he was planning to sit out games.

The real reason is he's scared Kevin Martin is going to put up 40+ on him.

I wish we still had Kmart. Landry has turned out to be nearly useless when he isn't scoring, and he isn't scoring very often these days. I used to think Martin was a ballhog but Landry is more of a ballhog than Martin ever was. To watch Landry play you'd think that every assist he makes takes a week off his life.

Yes and its because Landry is used to being the 6th man who comes in and all he is asked to do is score. Also its his contract year so it has to be in his head to put up numbers.

The thing with Martin is that on hindsight the management should've gave it the rest of the season to see if they can gel. That came in conflict with giving the team to Reke so he can win ROY. Another part that is probably underrated is that the Maloofs have been trying to unload salary like their life depended on it. Getting out of Kmart's contract and taking over Landry's small contract and expirings was the big motivation.

Tyreke Evans will travel with the Kings to Houston and is listed as day-to-day (plantar fasciitis).

Even if I bought into the hypothetical, under your scenario who gave Tyreke's brother unilateral decision making authority?....Could it be Tyreke himself? Or does his brother have some power of attorney over his decisions that I'm not aware of.

To me, it seems like a fairly simple issue that is centered around one thing - pain threshold. So who is going to determine Tyreke's pain threshold under your diagram? His brother? So then his brother and Team Tyreke are going to tell Tyreke how much pain he has and how much he can withstand? Seems like an preposterous scenario to me.

No, Kevin had quit, COULD NOT WORK (see my 1000 posts on the history of 20pt/20pt backcourts in the NBA, let alone if the guy without the ball is in fact worthless when not shoting) anyway, was throwing a pile of bad cess over a young team a mile wide, and was chewing through his trade value at record pace. If anything we traded him 3 months, or maybe even 6 months, too late, not too early.

The rest is just revisionism. Landry turning out to be less than we thought is not the same as Kevin being more than we thought. Its just an argument for Landry not being the trade target, which was a minority line of thought even at the time.

The same could be said for Landry btw -- trade him this summer and you get back much more than you do trading him now.

I can see it now:

Kings win the next 4-5 games as Cousins dominates -> Reke is ready to play and starts and they lose a game or two -> the anti-Rekers come out and blast him -> Kings trade Reke for someone suitable to play with Cousins

KM/Reke version 2.0
