Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

Oops, completely missed that one. I even scanned over the list to see if a Denzel movie was gone before I posted that. Yeah, it doesn't quite scream Denzel. Either way, you can't go wrong :p

Strange how that happens, I had my mind set on a Denzel (who, by the way, is the man) movie at this slot. Luckily it's not Training Day, although I do like that one quite a bit.

This is probably my favourite Denzel movie. It's based on a true story, stars Russell Crowe as well as Denzel, and combines good acting with a very interesting storyline. Frank Lucas was one risk-taking mofo, and it paid off for him until he was eventually incarcerated for a good number of years.

OH, almost forgot - this movie has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. It's pretty much all old r'n'b and jazz type stuff. Definitely helps with the setting and atmosphere.

American Gangster

A movie with dialogue that's memorable and untouchable, with a serious role reversal by the main character, it stands out to me not as Denzel Washington's best role, but his most unique. And though the story might be trite and cliched, the dialogue just won't quit.

With the 180th pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:
Training Day (2001), directed by Antoine Fuqua

I run **** round here, you just live here! ... King Kong ain't got **** on me!

Good pick. Somehow i forgot about that one.

It's much slower on this end for some reason, I am always caught off guard thinking I'll have more time on the long end of my side of the snake. On the other hand I saw David Stern on the tele last night and it sure doesn't look like the season will be starting any time soon.

I guess my question would be, "why do you have those in the first place?" ;)

For some reason, I only saw this one a few months ago. Turns out that it stands up to it's reputation. Definitely re-watchable. Surprised it hasn't been taken as I think a lot of people have seen it.

Would have picked it very early if I wasn't going for a different vibe. I just finally upgraded my DVD (one of the very first I bought) to Blu so I am due for a rewatch, problem is I have a tough time watching movies over 2 hours these days.

Had just added that to my list a few days ago when I noticed it not taken. Will now take it back off. :)

Another one I would probably chalk up to the number of people not taking movies from the first draft. This one was stolen from me pretty early last time (don't remember by whom). I probably would have nabbed it if it were still available in the final rounds as it is a favorite of mine (and, pdx, make time for the BluRay version; the transfer is gorgeous), but I am also trying to show love to films were ignored last time.

I will for sure, problem is lately I am having a hard time staying awake in a dark room. Very frustrating to say the least and I am sure it has partly influenced my drive in/double feature inspired draft as I am finding myself checking runtimes more and more before I commit to a flick after getting TJ to sleep. Hoping some recent lifestyle adjustments will get things back in order.

I think the next few films on my list are safe for now. Time to add another sword play flick to my stash, a bit less fantastical than Willow perhaps, but every bit as entertaining. This film is terrible in the dubbed English version, so I'm going only with the French version with subtitles. Adding a bunch more action here, but the story is quite intriguing as well, and works as a good horror/suspense/action film to supplement my man card. With my 13th choice, I select:

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
(Le pacte des loups)

Based loosely on a true story (there actually was a beast that killed 113 people in France around 1764)...and yes, that is the guy from Iron Chef America kicking a$$ :).

With this pick, I’m taking Gone With the Wind. I’ve only seen it once but I loved it. The sheer scope and ambition of this film puts many modern epics to shame. It’s still a powerful and amazing film over 70 years later.

I’d put off rewatching it due to it’s nearly 4 hour running time, but that would hardly be a problem on a desert island. In fact, that makes it perfect desert island material.

I'm all out of bubblegum.

They Live - 1988
With all due respect to The Thing and that movie with the guy in the William Shatner mask stabbing people, this is John Carpenter's masterwork.
