Just curious because I do like both of the movies picked this round, but do you guys really watch Christmas movies outside of November and December?

Love Actually is a versatile Christmas movie that is also good for a viewing whenever, similar to Die Hard in that it's a Christmas film, but so much more...Excessively Christmas films are usually only reserved for the holidays however.

Okay, well after yet another out of left field sort of selection I thought I too should go with something all edgy and indie and obscure:

The Lord of the Rings -- The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) PG-13

Oh, and unless there are any reasonable objections I'll take the Extended Version and get something like 4 hours worth of movie for my island. Two movies worth. This was dictated a little bit by my last draft when I took The Two Towers (which I always liked for the Rohan/Helm's Deep sequences). With The Return of the King already taken, and The Two Towers burning up one of my 5 repeat pick slots (I've already used 3) this was the choice, especially with certain jerks who's names shall not be uttered without profanity stealing away Indiana Jones swashbucklers) Some good nostalgia with it anyway, as in a fairly rare event for me I saw this in the theater first week and it was quite the event and very exciting from the opening flashback sequence when you realized Jackson was going to get it mostly right. The whole standing ovation at the end of the movie thing is a cliche, and a claim that is flat out made up 90% of the time by people to try to support the movies they like, but it actually happened with this one.
Will there be LARPING on your island

Have been chastised for holding things up despite being stuck in the phone conversation from hell, so will make it quick and elaborate later.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) -- Needed something comic book related on my island, and will enjoy having something that both celebrates all things nerd and provides awesome tunes.

My definition of Christmas movie means that you have to at least embrace "the reason for the season" at the end of the film in some way (at least the American "family values" reason, if not the Jesus reason which is a lot more rare), so you'll see a wretched character turn good or an anti-hero drop the anti. I don't really recall that in Love Actually but since I am not a fan of the film it has been years since I've rewatched it, perhaps I missed it. I do at least remember it being released during the holiday season which would be criteria #2 for me.

Die Hard was released in August (I remember quite vividly as I saw it on what my 14yo brain thought was a date) and is most definitely in no way shape or form a Christmas movie. Gremlins is another movie that fits this category for me.

I AM NOBONUS!

Via PM I have his picks, and once again he's adding more funny to the Star Wars Archipelago. With his 11th round selection, NoBonus chooses:

Caddyshack (1980)

"Ty, what did you shoot today?"
"Oh, Judge I don't keep score."
"Well then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?"
"By height..."

I AM STILL NOBONUS!

With the first pick in the 12th round, NoBonus selects:

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

Dr. Evil: Gentlemen, I have a plan. It's called blackmail. The Royal Family of Britain are the wealthiest landowners in the world. Either the Royal Family pays us an exorbitant amount of money, or we make it seen that Prince Charles has had an affair outside of marriage and therefore would have to divorce!
Number Two: Prince Charles *did* have an affair. He admitted it, and they are now divorced.
Dr. Evil: Right, people you have to tell me these things, okay? I've been frozen for thirty years, okay? Throw me a frickin' bone here! I'm the boss! Need the info.
[pause]
Dr. Evil: Okay no problem. Here's my second plan. Back in the 60's, I had a weather changing machine that was, in essence, a sophisticated heat beam which we called a "laser." Using these "lasers," we punch a hole in the protective layer around the Earth, which we scientists call the "Ozone Layer." Slowly but surely, ultraviolet rays would pour in, increasing the risk of skin cancer. That is unless the world pays us a hefty ransom.
Number Two: [pause] That also already has happened.
[in original pressings, Number Two said "That also has already been done."]
Dr. Evil: ****. Oh hell, let's just do what we always do. Hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world hostage. Yeah? Good! Gentlemen, it has come to my attention that a breakaway Russian Republic called Kreplachistan will be transferring a nuclear warhead to the United Nations in a few days. Here's the plan. We get the warhead and we hold the world ransom for... ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
Number Two: Don't you think we should ask for *more* than a million dollars? A million dollars isn't exactly a lot of money these days. Virtucon alone makes over 9 billion dollars a year!
Dr. Evil: Really? That's a lot of money.
[pause]
Dr. Evil: Okay then, we hold the world ransom for...
Dr. Evil: One... Hundred... BILLION DOLLARS!

Returning to the well of comic book movies:

From Hell (2001) -- Not everyone likes this one, but I've always found it an interesting take on Jack the Ripper. Like Alan Moore's books (which were written in such a way that made clear which scenes were based on documented accounts of the different cases, and which were entirely imagined by Moore), the film combines an exacting attention to detail with a narrative involving an absinthe-and-opium-addicted detective who had psychic premonitions and an elaborate conspiracy linking Jack the Ripper to the Freemasons and the royal family. It's a DVD that I tend to pull down from the shelves often when I'm looking for a couple hours of entertainment, so it deserves a spot on my island.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well, after briefly surveying my upcoming list and finding it getting weighted a little too much toward movies that everybody likes rather than movies I like myself, I thought I would just go ahead and take one based on pure personal preference:

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) PG-13

I will make no particular claim to special merit for this film other than its being just flat out fun and imminently rewatchable, which is a big key to everything I am taking. Its big, its loud, its full of gleeful mayhem and pretty people doing physically impossible things, I rarely have much use for the "summer blockbuster" type mindset, but this one just worked for me. Underneath the mayhem its actually a clever parody of marriage, and everybody is just having so much fun with it its hard not to get swept along. Features Angie at her most beautiful and dangerous as well, which will be both some consolation and some torture as I live out my remaining years on my empty little island.

Yep. Was on my list last time. Nice pick.

The Emperor's New Groove - 2000

After one full draft and half of another, as far as I can tell, I'm the first to take a classic-style Disney cartoon. And that honor goes to one of their more un-Disney like offerings. Go figure.

After spending years in developmental hell, changing production teams, story, style, title and even demoting Sting to the end credits only, we got this a zany, self parody where you can almost sense the staff throwing their hands in the air and yelling "screw it, let's just have fun with this."

David Spade is surprisingly tolerable as a cartoon while John Goodman provides the good and necessary counter to the times Spade does get annoying. And as far as villains go, Yzma and Kronk nail the laughable and lovable baddies role.

Well, with the other two gone, I may as well take the third.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Taking the middle film here and like Brick said when he took it last time, the battle of Helm's Deep in this movie is a fantastic fighting sequence that never gets old. An epic series of films, I am glad to have this part of it on my island.

Wow. There were only two animated movies I was even considering for my island and they both get picked within the span of three selections. I guess I'll have to decide whether to fill that void or let it go.

The Emperor's New Groove - 2000
The Kingdom of the Sun had the potential to be one of Disney's best features ever and instead we got this, which I would say is middle of the road for modern Disney. I know I've said it before but if anyone ever gets the opportunity to see The Sweatbox, Trudy Styler's documentary of Sting's involvement in this project, it is an absolute must see.

Well, I had to flip a coin to pick the last film of my self-imposed limit of five from the previous draft, but I can't complain about the outcome. I select To Kill A Mockingbird (1962).

As far as movie adaptations go, this is about as faithful to the book as you can hope - and it's about as good of a movie as you can ask for as well. I was one of the unlucky ones who was never "forced" to read Harper Lee's classic in high school, and I made it another fifteen years beyond that before a friend got me to see the film.

I had no idea what I was missing.

As a story, perfect. As a film, perfect. And as far as scenes go, this one sticks in my mind more than any other, and always has:

For William Blake:

There Will Be Blood (2007)
One of the darkest, bleakest, most pessimistic movies I've ever seen (multiple times); but if you're stuck on an island what's better than a movie that tells you that men are evil and society is crap?

Saw this movie a few days ago. Nice old school action flick. Good vs. Evil. I thought the special effects weren't overdone, and I really like the way the storyline came out on film (see Green Lantern for how to mess up the opportunity for a good movie.) Some clever one-liners, good action sequences, and special effects kept in check, but well done when they were there.

My next pick on this island
Thor's fellow Avenger - seriously, is this a spoiler?
is none other than:

Captain America (2011)

Also, Hayley Atwell was quite pleasing on the eyes. Quite.

Alright... time to switch gears a bit. While there's a bunch of romantic comedies that I don't mind sitting through with the missus, there are few that I can think of that I would actually stick around to watch on my own. But I'm guessing if I'm stuck on an island for eternity I might want a hint of that genre with me, so I'm going with this movie. A little bit of silly, a little bit of sweet, and Rudy on 'roids.

Remember when I said I was waiting on Office Space to get picked?

Waiting... - 2005
I grew up in restaurants. Both my parents owned and operated prominent area establishments and my late grandfather also owned and operated several luxury hotels. Then in my early career I found myself doing installation and consulting of restaurant point-of-sale systems. This is Office Space for service industry folk. And so strictly from a personal standpoint I had to have it. And yeah, pretty much every disgusting thing in this flick is grounded in reality. Except for the penis showing game, I've never seen that.

While Ryan Reynolds, Justin Long and Anna Faris get top billing, the movie features a great supporting cast of "that guys" including David Koechner, Luis Guzman, Chi McBride, John Francis Daley (Sweets from Bones and from Freaks and Geeks), even Dane Cook before he became overexposed and the most annoying guy ever.

I finally got around to putting in my thoughts on Swingers and it hit me that both flicks also offer great tributes to the Goodfellas shot.

With my 12th round pick, I select:

Willow (1988)

A fanstasy classic that played a key role in my childhood. I remember watching this in the theater at age 6 and being scared $*&*less by the opening death-dog scene, yet blown away by the story and cinematics. The morphing scenes were ahead of their time, and George Lucas + Ron Howard = movie excellence. Comedy, action, suspense, magic, and swordplay make this film highly rewatchable, and lots of fun. I'm glad I can now add it to my stash!

Good pick. I was thinking of getting this one later if it slipped. I also really enjoyed this movie. Bit of an old-school feel to it in pacing and other factors.

A movie with dialogue that's memorable and untouchable, with a serious role reversal by the main character, it stands out to me not as Denzel Washington's best role, but his most unique. And though the story might be trite and cliched, the dialogue just won't quit.

With the 180th pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:
Training Day (2001), directed by Antoine Fuqua

I run **** round here, you just live here! ... King Kong ain't got **** on me!
