Next pick...Seems like all the classics that were on my high list are stolen, time to go with my favorites.

Dance Dance Revolution --- Arcade --- (1998?)

This pick continues to add what I think is much needed diversity to a selection if you're to spend your days on a deserted island. This game is the ultimate in replayable as the difficulty can get cranked up to unbelievable heights. An impressive list of upbeat techno to keep your spirits up accompanied by lights and of course all the fun of dancing until you can't dance no more.

This is probably the game that has sucked the most quarters from my pockets in my life. Good times.

I just now noticed my list of selectable games. I zoomed right past the Spoiler.

On that note I change my pick to Irritating Stick! It just sounds like a winner!

:D

Okie doke. Luckily, someone else's slowness (tsk, tsk, SLAB) took up the whole day and now I can look upon another poster with disdain rather than apologize for my absence. Yay!!

My next pick:

Resistance: Fall of Man -- PS3 (2006) -- On behalf of everyone who went out and purchased a PS3 at (or shortly after) launch, thank goodness for this game. For a solid year, it was the ONLY exclusive title for the console that was even remotely worth playing. A console shooter, I know, but loads of fun and controls smoothly. Also, the aliens blow up good.

There are a few others I play on the PS3. And several more I'm looking forward to that will be coming out later this year. But... yeah, it's mostly been a $600, fatter PS2.

That was the thought when it first came out, but the games are getting good now. I own 6 games and 4 of them are taken in this draft already, and another one will quite possibly be my next pick.

Seeing as how you only play a few, I recommend my last pick (Guns of the Patriots) because its new and its an awesome game whether you are familiar with the metal gear solid series or not.

A $600, fatter PS2 that doesn't even play the one game I still wanted to play when my PS2 bricked.

The Blu-Ray looks darn good though.

That might just depend on what version you have. I have the 60GB version and it plays all of my ps2 games, and even my ps1 games

Doesn't play Guitar Hero 2 and Rocks the 80s. An adapter was supposed to come out any day now back then.

There is one game for it that I really really like, I'm sure its not going to get picked though.

I'm leaning towards taking one with my next pick. That could possibly be it because the game I'm considering is vastly underrated

And the adapter is out, it just doesn't work perfectly I don't think

Im so terrible at that game. The Chimera kill me easily and often.

OK, two picks here:

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries (PC)

If I can't have the regular game, I'll take the sequel. Good enough.

As mentioned earlier, these games are where the "Warhawk" moniker came from. It was my favorite mech to use in heavy battles.

A little additional FYI:

Portal (PC)

This game is lots of fun, with new ways to conquer maps always popping up and the challenge maps, etc, mean a lot of playing time for this very fun game.

[yt=Portal]Wb7aDZeO_MQ[/yt]

It's more of a puzzle game than anything else, with wicked sharp humor.

from wiki:

The game consists primarily of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and other simple objects using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (dubbed the "Portal Gun", "ASHPD" or "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device"), a unit that can create an inter-spatial portal between flat planes. The player character is challenged by an AI named "GLaDOS" to complete each puzzle in the "Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center" using the Portal Gun with the promise of receiving cake when all the puzzles are completed.

Portal has been acclaimed as one of the most original games in 2007 despite being comparatively short in length. The game has received praise for its unique gameplay and darkly humorous story (created with the assistance of Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek of "Old Man Murray" fame), the character of GLaDOS (voiced by Ellen McLain), and the final credits song, "Still Alive" (written by Jonathan Coulton for the game). The game's popularity has led to official merchandise from Valve (incuding plush Companion Cubes) as well as fan creations (such as recreations of the cake) using elements of the game.

It has been praised for its unique gameplay and dark, deadpan humor.[53] Eurogamer cited that "the way the game progresses from being a simple set of perfunctory tasks to a full-on part of the Half-Life story is absolute genius",[54] while GameSpy noted that "What Portal lacks in length, it more than makes up for in exhilaration."[55] The game has been criticized for sparse environments, and both criticized and praised for its short length.[56]

Aggregate reviews for the stand-alone PC version of Portal gave the game an average rating of 90% based on 20 reviews through Game Rankings,[51] and 90% through 21 reviews on Metacritic.[50] Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, a reviewer known for his acerbic criticisms, stated in his Zero Punctuation series that he "can't think of any criticism for it," also noting that this had never happened and will never happen again. [57]

The game also generated a fan-following for the Weighted Companion Cube[58]—while the cube itself does not talk or act in the game, fans have created plush,[59] papercraft for the cube and the various turrets,[60] PC case mods[61] and models of the Portal cake[62][63] versions of the "character". Jeep Barnett, a programmer for Portal, noted that players have told Valve that they had found it more emotional to incinerate the Weighted Companion Cube than to harm one of the "Little Sisters" from BioShock.[31] Both GLaDOS and the Weighted Companion Cube were nominated for the "Best New Character Award" on G4; with GLaDOS winning the award for having "lines that will be quoted by gamers for years to come."[64] The phrase "the cake is a lie" has also become an Internet meme[65][66] and has been the basis for unofficial Portal merchandise such as t-shirts.[67]

Portal has won several awards since its release:
  • At the 2008 Game Developers Choice Awards, Portal won "Game of the Year", along with the "Innovation Award" and "Best Game Design".[73]
  • IGN.com honored Portal with several awards, for "Best Puzzle Game" for PC[74] and Xbox 360,[75] "Most Innovative Design" for PC,[76] and "Best End Credit Song" (for "Still Alive") for Xbox 360,[77] along with overall honors for "Best Puzzle Game"[78] and "Most Innovative Design".[79]
  • In its "Best of 2007" GameSpot honored The Orange Box with 4 awards in recognition of Portal, giving out honors for "Best Puzzle Game",[80] "Best New Character(s)" (for GLaDOS),[81] "Funniest Game",[82] and "Best Original Game Mechanic" (for the Portal Gun).[83]
  • Portal was awarded "Game of the Year (PC)", "Best Narrative (PC)", and "Best Innovation (PC and console)" honors by 1UP.com in its 2007 editorial awards.[84]
  • GamePro honored the game for "Most Memorable Villain" (for GLaDOS) in its Editors' Choice 2007 Awards.[85]
  • Portal was awarded the "Game of the Year" award in 2007 by Joystiq,[86] Good Game,[87] and Shacknews.[88]
  • The "Most Original Game" award by X-Play.[89]
  • In Official Xbox Magazine's 2007 Game of the Year Awards, Portal won "Best New Character" (for GLaDOS), "Best Original Song" (for "Still Alive"), and "Innovation of the Year".[90]
  • In GameSpy's 2007 Game of the Year awards, Portal was recognized for "Best Puzzle Game",[91] "Best Character" (for GLaDOS), and "Best Sidekick" (for the Weighted Companion Cube).[91]
  • A.V. Club called it the "Best Game of 2007".[92]
  • The webcomic Penny Arcade awarded Portal "Best Soundtrack", "Best Writing", and "Best New Game Mechanic" in their satirical 2007 "We're Right" awards.[93]
  • Eurogamer gave Portal first place in its Top 50 Games of 2007 rankings.[94]

I have a couple games in particular I think may be snatched soon and won't make it back to me. :( Too many games and too few picks. ;)

<crosses fingers they stay on the board....>

My next pick is one that, though it is one of my favorite games (more specifically, from one of my favorite franchises), I don't know that I would have picked so early under different circumstances. It certainly deserves an early pick, but is probably completely safe based on the trends of this draft so far. However, in the event that people start paying too much attention to the Insomniac logo on my last pick, figured I might as well grab this one right away.

My next pick:

ratchet8002ek3.jpg

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal -- PS2 (2004) -- Up Your Arsenal is the third game of the Ratchet & Clank series and, while my initial instinct was to just go for broke and pick all five games to start my portion of this draft (yeah, I'm that big a fan of the series), this was the easy choice when I forced myself to narrow it down to one. Firstly, this game is gorgeous. Even prettier than the PS3 version, given the relative graphical capabilities, as far as I'm concerned. Secondly, the gameplay is perfect. Great platforming, some good puzzle elements, fun battles with a ton of enemies, and fantastic gadgets and weapons. The last of which are a staple of the series, and this installment certainly doesn't disappoint -- if you want to take everyone out sniper style with the Flux Rifle, you can, or you can move in close and get crackin' with the Plasma Whip. Also, I LOVE games that give you reasons to play them over and over, and the folks at Insomniac are great at that. Skill Points, Titanium Bolts, challenge mode, weapon upgrades, easter eggs, unlockables... I think it took me four times through this game to get to 100% completion, and it was still fun the next three times through. Perfect as my sole source of entertainment on the island. I grew up as a platform girl and, while everyone else loved Mario 64, I left the genre completely after the move to a 3D format. Until I picked up the first Ratchet & Clank. Like I said earlier, I probably could have let this one wait a little longer, but there was no question in my mind that at least one of the R&C games was making it to my island. Hell, since I technically didn't get to make my first five picks here, maybe I'll go ahead and smuggle in the rest of the series, too. ;)

I have to go to work, but my next pick will happen when I get home.

Im not flaking out again.

Final Fantasy X --- PS2 --- (2001)

What can I say? I just love me some RPGs, and some of the top RPGs around are the Final Fantasy series. FFX is just what you would expect from a Final Fantasy game. Big world, many hours, great story, deep, the combat system, and just plain fun.

Voted by Japanese video game magazine 'Famitsu' to be the best game of all time.

Not bad at all for a mid-round pick.

I think it's far from the best game of all time. The voice acting sucked, and I didn't like many of the characters. It still was a very fun game though (like all FFs). I got as far as the last boss fight, but I screwed myself because my levels were too low and for some reason I couldn't go back any further. Btw, did you ever finish Kimahri's butterfly game??

You know what, it definitly isnt the best game of all time, hence why it was picked in round 8. Just an interesting little tidbit I read on it, and thought it was cool a mid-pick game was held that highly regarded by some people.

Still awesome though, and I think fell more than it should have. IMO it is better than FF7 which went in round 3.

And no. I havent really touched the game is forever...I think I may need to dig it out as I just finished FF6 on my DS.

Dragon's Lair 1983 (arcade)

I remember the first 50 cent game I played at the arcade. Man did I spend alot of money on this game, worth every penny though.

I really like the game, for the record, I am just pointing out its flaws. And I picked FF7 with the 5th overall pick. And no its not better than FF7, nothing is :p

I thought that was very cool when I was a kid -- using prerendered comics instead of little sprites. I was very mad when they cancelled the cartoon after less than a full season. That and Thundarr the Barbarian (which was actually kind of ahead of its time). ;)

What do you mean as a kid. I still think it is cool. This is one arcade game I am looking to own in my house.

I'll have a hard time when it comes to factoring DL in for voting purposes. On one hand it was completely awesome when I was a kid, on the other hand I have played it as an adult, its far too easy and the only variation is the order of the rooms and one or two levels that have multiple animations. I own it for Sega CD or Saturn or one of those systems and played it once or twice and then it sat on the shelf for good.

I guess I should have went back and checked before just saying it.

And Im not to sure about that one. Not sure at all.

;)

That's just the thing with Final Fantasy games. Everyone has their favorites. There's only 1 or 2 in the whole series that doesn't have a strong argument for why it's the best one. Me personally, I'd rank X probably 5th, after VII, VI, and 2 that will remain nameless. I just really didn't like Tidus, and Wakka's voice was extremely annoying. Jecht and Auron were awesome though
