Looking Glass Studios? I have no idea what game you're talking about. It's too bad they had to go out of business

Yes, they developed another game before Thief. It was famous but don't want to name it now, it's not on my list but might be on someone else's.

They actually developed quite a few huge critical smashes. Sadly for them they often didn't sell as well as they were reviewed.

CRYSIS - 2007 - PC

The controls were pretty innovative as well in switching the gun specs or going with suit strength/stealth/speed and others. I am a FPS MANIAC here, and I liked this game almost as much as I like Counter Strike. That says a lot for any other FPS nut out there.. If you have not tried this game make sure you get a good video card/processor and buy this game.. I had to wait to purchase it until I got my new motherboard/processor + video card, because my AMD 3200+ / Gigabyte motherboard and ATI Radeon 1600 wouldn't run this. I ended up getting a Intel Duo Core E6750 w/ Gigabyte Motherboard (which can handle a better processor when I upgrade) - and a GeForce 9600GT. It runs it pretty good with all that.. I got my Core Duo overclocked of course + about 20% to 3100GHz.

NOTE: This thread has been sanitized for your (and our) sanity. The discussion of the games is back on track.

:)

I've never played this game, but if it lives up to everything I've seen and read, it's an inspired pick. Well done.

I played the demo and while graphically it was amazing, the gameplay was not inspired IMHO. Pretty, but, eh....

Still, nice choice for being stuck on an island. Kinda like being stuck in the ocean on a life raft and having to watch Jaws over and over again.... ;)

Sorry about the delay, technical difficulties.

On to my pick:

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A B A Start

Contra (1987) - Arcade, NES

Another game where I dropped many a quarter. Although just as fun was stealing your partners lives on the NES.

Just throwing this out there. Did anyone want to volunteer as an alternate in case kingsfan916 misses his next pick? PM or post here if interested

ran through it a couple of months ago over a weekend -- got it the same time I did Bioshock. Looked amazing, and there were a couple of nifty big scale effects (watch the mountain) that you might miss if you weren't looking in the right direction. Pretty fun, although the supersuit gimmick was hit or miss, and there was a major tone change in mid-game which looked good from an artistic standpoint but the gameplay wasn't as good afterward.

Duke Nukem 3D (1996) - PC

Now nabbing the third of the four shooters on my list this early might be a reach, or it might not. But Duke was just too big a hoot to let slip elsewhere. You play Duke Nukem, the toughest, rudest, most sexist badass on the planet as we get assaulted by aliens. Duke's motivation for saving the world? "Nobody steals our chicks... and lives!" Duke is the sort of game where you have shootouts in porn shops. Where the L.A.P.D. has been mutated into pig cops (get it?) with the label L.A.R.D. across their chest. Where Duke fights through a strip club and when you approach any of the strippers on stage and hit use/enter, you extend your hand full of cash and say "Shake it Baby" as she opens her top. Where you go into a bathroom looking for enemies, and can stop in front of a urinal to actually take an, er, break. You stomp on alien's heads, talk major smack, toss bad puns, and run into a variety of pop cultural icons. Lot of fun. The all time embarrassment that was/is the now 12 years of screwing around on a sequel is a tragedy.

For a hilarious selection of the quotes you growl out while kicking *** and chewing bubblegum, check this out http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0228246/quotes (some naughty words are included).

I would have been obligated to take this in the next round if it were still available. Good pick. I thought Duke said "wanna dance?" when he took out the cash though. Might be confusing it with a different game

Master of Orion II (1996) - PC

And with the elite earthbound 4x game as my #1 overall pick, I now return to the genre for what is quite possibly still the elite outer space 4x ever made. The industry has spent a dozen years trying to recapture the magic here (no idea why it is so hard), including one completely lamentable "sequel" that was apparently farmed off to a bunch of twitch gamers with no understanding or taste for the 4x genre (their brilliant idea = you obviously do not want to be bothered with controlling anything so we'll automate everything (by really bad A.I. no less) and give you no control options). In any case, now as I spend eternity conquering the planet time and time again with Civ, I can mix in conquering the galaxy as well.

Let the controversy begin:

Guitar Hero II (2006) XBox 360

74-117-029-02.jpg

I do like the set list much better than GH3, considering it has both Hangar 18 and The Trooper. You could also download songs on the XBox. Finally, this version has "Trogdor," one of the greatest songs of all time.

The Demo didn't do it justice.. The full game was amazing... The controls were pretty innovative as well in switching the gun specs or going with suit strength/stealth/speed and others.

It was a VERY good game.. I am a FPS maniac, and I liked it better than Call of Duty Modern Warfare. Almost as good as counter strike. I wish You could take counterstrike here, but alas it's multiplayer. I will make my pick momentarily.

I'll take your word for it, and while the suit controls were different, overall the game was not that impressive to me. Graphically it looked great, and I have a Core2 Quad, 4 GB ram and an 8800 GTS 512 that ran the game smoothly with great detail. :D Visually it was fantastic! The gameplay was average to good, but not enough to really grab me. I'm not putting it down at all, I just didn't think it had the gameplay that grabbed me like other games have in the past.

Star Wars: Empire at War - Forces of Corruption - 2006 - PC

OK.. I love this frigging game. Not sure why, but I cannot get enough of it. It has a lot to do with the mods you can install to make pretty much any Star Wars Hutt/Rebel/Empire char appear in this game. It's a great game for anyone who loves the "galactic conquest" mode. You basically hop/conquer planet to planet. You have both ground wars, and space battles. In space it's fun to put your Mon Calamari cruisers, and X-Wings/Y-Wings/B-Wings/E-Wings/A-Wings, Frigates, Corvettes up against SSDs or normal Star Destroyers. The whole idea of adding Hard Points to most of the ships was a great idea because you can try to take out shields on a star destroyer with your Y-Wings before the Tie squaderns knock your bombers out. You had to cover them with your X-Wings.. I cannot say enough about the game to do it justice. If you are a star wars nut I say go out and get this game + expansion right now! I didn't take the EAW because the expansion to EAW added a LOT more to the game and there are more mods out there.

Yah I hear ya.. My brother thinks I should play a couple games (online games) which I should like being a hardcore gamer but I don't (even though they get high reviews) like Everquest and such.. I like the PVP in games.. I played WoW for a long time and liked it. Before that I played DAOC, and before that it was UO. Those are the only three MMORPG games I have ever really played. I was thinking about getting back into WoW but not totally sure yet. It's cheap entertainment!

I refuse to pay to play, so I only buy games w/o a subscription cost. And I have a friend who loves FPS games that are more "realistic" - I just don't care for them. He bought me a couple as gifts over the years for a birthday, etc., and I just can't really get into them. If I want to snipe someone for a while, I grab UT2004 and a sniper rifle/shock rifle and play against the bots on Face Classic or Grassyknoll or whatever map strikes my fancy. It is fun and I get the great announcer voice narrating the action! "Headshot", "Double Kill", "Multi-kill", "Ulta Kill", Monster Kill", "Holy S***". :D

That's fine. Who would like to replace him???

Question to the other commissioners. In these situations, what happens to his earlier picks? Do someone just start where he left off, or do the new person catch up and pick different games while his original list gets put back on the shelf?

this is a tweener.

Defintiely stuff is not back on the shelves. But for late pullouts, it was just locked at however many picks and the other 15 go on. For early pullouts before much of a list is put together, the new person just takes over the list and starts adding to it. For this position? More of the latter than the former I would think, but still tough given that a new person may not like any fo the early picks. And if you can't get somebody enthused, might be better just to treat it like the a late pull out.

I would be willing to jump in and take the list as is, for what it's worth. None of the games selected are ones I would have taken, but... hell, they're probably WAY bigger vote getters than anything I will pick.

Sure. I've been regretting that I skipped this draft ever since it started.

Ok. GoGoGadget is officially inserted in place of kingsfan916. Technically, you may make a pick right now since he timed out on his last turn. I don't know if you want to do that now, or just pick 2 in a row when your turn is up. Your decision

His list isn't that bad at all so far, except for shoosing both Halo 2 and 3, I think....

Sounds like your top picks were pretty much still available, anyways, right?
