Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

If you do, know that in my research for the pick it turns out that there is a gold version you can buy online from "Steam" that apparently has a couple of ciritical errors in it (including one that messes up the balance of the financial system), and they have been disinclined to fix the error. So it might be more of an ebay purchase. Can't have mine however. :p
Yes, I went and looked it up... kind of a sad history post JA2, JA3 is looking like it will go the way of Duke Nukem Forever.

Well since you've opened the can of worms and I'm not playing, I must say that the first 2 Fallout games are some of my absolute favorites, along with the game that inspired them which I will be kind enough to not name right now. I remember playing Fallout so extensively that I would dream about random encounters when I wasn't playing it. Unfortunately I never fully beat part 2. Can't wait for 3.

Shhhhh....!!!

Looks like I could potentially wreck your day :)

Why in that last quote did the capitlization of my original post change?

Just a rules update here. Expansion packs WILL be considered a different game than their original, as most differ from the original game significantly

Er...which ones are you thinking of? Because most of the ones I know of are basically just reworkings of the same engine with a new plot and a few extra tweaks/monsters or whatever, and that just opens it up for 3 separate people to basically get versions of the same game.

I've discussed this with other people thru PMs, and, while I'm not much of a computer gamer myself, they seem to think that expansion packs do seem to change the game. I see no problem with it. And when you think about it, sports titles are pretty much the same game year in and year out. I did suggest limiting the number of times a person can choose an expansion pack, would that be better for everyone?

also...most, if not all, expansion packs won't play without the base SKU, so not sure what someone gains on their fake island by taking a non-playable game.

So do large patches, custom content etc. (change the game).

I'm just not sure what is gained there, outside of letting multiple people take the most popular games and clouding things. There are few, if any, standalone expansion packs. They might change the flavor a bit, but if that's what somebody wants, why not just call that a version of the origianl game that can be specified? As in only one person can take the game, but if you want you can take the game with xxx expansion pack? (Course then I ahve no idea why everybody wouldn;t just take every game with maxed out expansion packs since you get both the orignal and the expanded version).

This was my biggest concern, which is making me lean towards NOT allowing expansion packs. But, like I said, I'm not much of a computer gamer, so I'm not really in a position to make a good decision on this. It might be in everyones best interest to NOT consider expansion packs individual games, as you make good points, but I'll leave this open for further discussion.

I think the problem here is that some expansion packs add a great deal of content, new playable "races", additional gameplay types, etc. Effectively, you have an entirely "new" game to play.

Some are just glorified map packs.

Where do you draw the line?

Frankly, I'd like to see the expansion packs left in as separate games, but the real-life requirement that the original game be purchased as well does throw a bit of a damper on that idea - hadn't considered that angle.

That might be the deciding factor here....

While there are no doubt expansion packs that DO change the game a lot, I'm getting a vibe that says most simply add minor changes to the original. This gets real sticky, especially if the original is already taken. So I think I'm gonna have to change my stance and NOT allow them. However, like Brick said, if the original game isn't taken, you may indicate that you want an expansion pack with it.

No problem, I think that might be the easierst and most clear route to keeping this draft going in an organized and cohesive manner. And maybe, for the purpose of this draft, we can just assume that the game selected comes with the expansion packs already included. Like Brick said, that would seem to be a no-brainer....

Sorry for the confusion. And yeah I agree, but I will leave it up to the drafters to indicate if they want an expansion pack or not. I'm gonna delete my first post on this topic to avoid any further confusion

Can I retroactively pick up Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two then?

You can't play them without Half-Life 2 first installed ;)

Honestly though, I just vote for expansion packs to not be allowed at all. They would just cause too much confusion.

Actually, no, as they are standalone games that take place after HL2 and do NOT require HL2 to play. For instance, look at the package you can buy from Steam right now:

Buy Half-Life 2: Episode One

Includes: Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, Half-Life Deathmatch: Source, Half-Life 2: Episode One

http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=380&cc=US

There are many packages available, some including HL2 and some not. They use the same base code, but the original game is not required to play the subsequent episodes.

I figure, standalone expansions are separate picks and non-standalone expansions can be included with a pick. Seems simple enough.

Tecmo Bowl! (1989) - NES

Now things get dicey, as my picks have all been safe thus far. I have the top 3 that I wanted, so my video game dynasty is set. I could have gone with a more modern pick, but nostalgia won out. Even though the NFL didn't allow use of team names, the NFLPA didn't care (or didn't exist in its current money-grubbing form.) It's a shame that Bo Jackson was only involved in one play, cause he was fast. Although not as fast as LT, but history has shown that LT often had "help," which showed in the fact that you could block nearly every field goal and extra point with him.

Shoot.. that was my next one :(

OK... This pick would be a TON more fun if you had 3 other players with you..

Anyhow, here it is.. One of my favorite standup video games of all time..

Gauntlet - ARCADE platform - 1985

This game was so freaking fun to play in the arcade. I think I first played in 1989 or there about.. My mom and dad were in the 2 story Modesto Mall, and gave me and my little brother $5 to play in the arcade while they shopped. Well We spent the whole $5 getting to a high level with a couple other kids. It was so fun to play, and if I could go back in time this would probably be the first game I walk to (with the exception of Street Fighter II Which was already picked! :( )

Blue Elf shot the food! :D Don't remember if that was in the original or II, but that has been an inside joke with a friend of mine for years. He was always shooting the food on accident. ;)

I briefly considered addding that to my list, as I was one of the fools who played it back in the 80s for a bit. Quite addictive -- one of the cleverest money munching rackets ever foisted on the youth of America. Make it a 4 player coop game -- so one person dies, the others carry on. But of course the dead one isn't going to want to just stand there and watch while his buddies keep playing, so in goes another quarter for him to respawn and rejoin the fight. Then his buddy dies, and same deal. And so there is like this peer pressure to never give up until you've dropped every piece of change on you into the machine. Deadly.

Lost its addictive quality once I finally figured out that there was no end though. Then I was onto it. :p

Yeah mean and my little D&D nerd buddies would go play Gauntlet for hours then go home and pretend we were ninjas.

Then I got cool ;)

I think you mean "then you lost your cool". :p Nothing's cooler than some D&D and playing ninja when you are young. :D

Things that were cooler then:
My lavender freestyle bmx bike
Town and Country t-shirts
Gotcha "shorts" that went to mid-calf

Things that didn't mix well with the above, but that are pretty darned cool:
Girls

I had changed my pick to the first gauntlet when I found out that I had the wrong game ;)

The main difference with the second one was there were more monsters, and you weren't bound by playing a specific player if one spot in the game was taken.

The first one was more original :)
