Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

Must have been a good pick, if I already have people vying for it...Don't blame me man, I've been at work all day, and can't attach images...I will bold the pick thou...

I can understand that. Although if your work allows you to go to Wikipedia, just go there, search your game, get the address of the box picture that will be there and just insert it into the post via IMG tags or that yellow little icon on the bar above with the mountain in it.

If we want to get real literal with the rules, it seems like it requires you to post a picture, which isn't a requirement in any other thread. I'm guessing it just is suggesting the use of a picture, but the wording makes it seem its required. However, all threads have required brief descriptions with the picks.

Pictures aren't really required I guess, but they are preferred. Mainly because of what just happened to you, but also because in some instances it will tell me the platform they chose that game for when they don't indicate it otherwise.

Well one good thing about this draft is that inspired by my first pick I started up another game of Civ, and had plenty of time to finish it off before the LONG, SLOW snake ever made it back to me. So make that 55 World Conquerings. :D

Sorry for the wait, with my second pick I take Super Mario 64 - 1996 N64

Classic game, I beat this several times back in the day and never got tired of it

You know, I sometimes think that I should conquer cities, that it might actually help me win a domination victory; at the very least, it would stop my rivals from shotgunning out settlers and building new cities over the ashes of where their old cities used to be...

But then I think, **** that ****; I leave none to tell the tale. No survivors. I'm a killer, not a conqueror

For those that know me personally, it may seem odd that I go for a religion based cultural domination victory when I play.

Though it sucks when someone decides to declare war on me completely out of the blue.

Finally it goes. And it is shockingly the first Mario game to go. I was tempted to take it, but I never owned it for 64 personally and did not beat it entirely until the DS version came out. So I think I would have been unworthy. Glad to see someone finally take it. It was a monumental game in that it was the first 3D game ever really. Or at least the first good one.

I hope everybody else is having a terrible round 2, because I sure am. This is literally the 4th or 5th time I've had to change this pick. In any case, my 2nd pick is...

Super Metroid (1994) - SNES

I'm sure this game would have been taken soon. One of the greatest games ever made IMO. I never get sick of this game; fighting the unique bosses, searching for the different power-ups, blasting the red and green doors with missiles..

From IGN:
"Hailed as one of the best 2D adventures ever, Nintendo's sci-fi epic still provides one of the most thought out and intriguing gameplay experiences around. Ranging from extensive platform challenges to gigantic boss battles to a comprehensive power-up system, Super Metroid has attained a divine place in the hearts of longtime gamers. Certainly, it stands as something players and developers can idolize for years to come"
Just a reminder to everyone, please send PM's to the next person after your pick is made, as I didn't receive one this time around. And although I check in on this draft regularly, I thought I'd remind everyone again as a precaution.

I almost saved this 1 for the next round but decided not to. Looks like I made a good decision. Super Mario 64 and the Zelda's were all gonna be my next pick

I was thinking this game would have been first round material..

Anyhow, for the PC Platform one of my all time favorites........

STARCRAFT Released for the PC March 1998 (and believe it or not I still play!)

I still have the entire draftboard to go until me, but my next set of picks remain in my court.

Im expecting them to fly off the shelves soonish, though.

My fingers remain crossed!

Striking a blow for women's rights is this game that I can't help but plink a quarter in every time I pass by. The missus gets pretty angry when I do so, because I'll be there for the next half hour or so. It's easy, it's addictive, and it brings back memories of a simpler time...sigh.

While wanting to give Spike's pick some time here to bask in the sun, I also do not want to unnecessarily hold this up, so I'll have the first of my picks up in a few.

Oblivion (2006) -- PC

Review
One of the biggest and most beautiful games ever made and with its size and infinitely customizable characters, a load of bang for your buck. With these first few picks one of the things I was/am looking for is replayability -- gonna be on this island a long LONG time alone with my 20 games. And the Elder Scroll series has always been about complete freedom to do what you want when you want. Despite my occasional quibbles with their lack of high end treasures and power, and leveling of monsters to always match you (so you rarely feel more powerful) being able to do anything and everything whenever you want, however you want, is just amazing. Want to ignore the main quest? Feel free. There are literally hundreds of side quests, dungeons, and ruins all over the world. Want to play as a mage type? Feel free. A warrior? Again, feel free. A thief? Assasin? Archer? Good guy? Bad guy? Become a gladiator? A vampire? Whatever the hell you want, and/or mix and match however you would like. Learn any skill, focus on any weapon. Carry your world on your back, or buy houses all over the world. Join mages guilds, fighter's guilds, thieves guild, or even a really fun cold blooded assasins guild. Its just about the biggest most involved single player game you are going to find. And oh so beautiful -- it has long confused me how the Bethesda folks have been able to produce these games -- while everybody else strictly limits where you can go and what you can see, these guys just keep on cranking out these enormous worlds where you can look across a valley and see a city 10 miles off, and walk there every step watching it grow larger as you get closer. Where the hundreds of characters in the game go right ahead with their own routines and own lives even when you are on the other side of the world. They'll go on patrol, go home to sleep, and then go to work in the morning, stop to have conversations with each other, all whether you are around or not. I've never understood how that has been possible given the limitations everbody else seems to acknowledge. How does Bethesda do it? Or maybe just as pertinent, how come nobody else does? In any case, it is amazing and immersive.

Well, three ways to go here, and the other two picks are both probably more strategic, but I did not want to lose this one.

Jagged Alliance 2 (1999) -- PC

Review
This might very well be my all time second most played computer game (or 5th most, or whatever, behind the Civ games), and it is still the most fun that I've ever had playing a squad tactics game. Just addictive, and the reasons for that are myriad. First of all is the great mix here of role playing game, strategy game, and then sqaud tactics game. The schtick is you are a mercenary captain hired by the dposed leader of a 3rd world nation to retake his country for him (which is pretty dumpy and fortunately only has maybe a few thousand soldiers). You work for a group called A.I.M., and have online access to 50+ mercs for the job. You put together your teams (you can have multiple teams all over the country), and then go to work. You have to clear sectors, conquer mining towns, and get those mining towns up and operational so that you can get enough money to keep on paying your mercs every week. You also need to have medical mercs heal your party over time, mechanical mercs pick locks or repair your worn out weapons and armor, teaching mercs train other mercs or locals. Meanwhile the enemy counterattacks your towns in waves, there are side quests, you can train local militia to defend your towns etc. You even get to create your own custum merc (who is "you" to elad your teams). The second addictive factor in the series are the mercs themselves -- like a great movie, its all about the characters. And what makes this game so fun is that your mercs aren't just random groups of stats, they all have very distinct personalities and some of the best voice acting in any game ever. You've got badass pros, rank amateurs, and everything inbetween. Some are psychos, some are cowards, some hate each other and won't work together, some love each other, and they all spout hilarious lines as they are getting shot, setting mines, kicking people in the head, or blowing them away. And finally of course is the fighting itself, which is turn based (the game is real time until a fight starts) and loads of fun. Especially in the early going when you have to make do with crappy weapons and shaky mercs. I've beat this game and every expansion and user mod, and for several years there kept on fiddling around with this idea I had that if I played the first day just perfect, and somehow mugged this crime lord with a boat load of cash (and a Steyr AUG -- very useful in the early game) you find off to the West surrounded by dozens of cronies with my underequipped ultra cheap initial crew, that I could accumulate enough money to hire the very best of the best and make a huge push for the capitol within the first week. Never did pull it off. But stuck forever on an island, will have plenty of time to work on it.

I didn't have 2, but the first 2 Jagged Alliance games were a blast. I liked Deadly Games since it spared the micro-management aspect, but on a desert island I might want that back. The merc personalities were great as well. Great games that I had pretty much forgotten about until now, since I never had JA2 I may just have to find a copy somewhere.

Now things get dicey, as my picks have all been safe thus far. I have the top 3 that I wanted, so my video game dynasty is set. I could have gone with a more modern pick, but nostalgia won out. Even though the NFL didn't allow use of team names, the NFLPA didn't care (or didn't exist in its current money-grubbing form.) It's a shame that Bo Jackson was only involved in one play, cause he was fast. Although not as fast as LT, but history has shown that LT often had "help," which showed in the fact that you could block nearly every field goal and extra point with him.

Since this draft will likely be long past over when it's finally released, I feel perfectly safe in saying that I cannot wait for Bethesda's next game, Fallout 3. It takes the bigness and immersiveness of the Elder Scrolls series out of the medieval/fantasy setting (which has always bored me to no end, for some reason), and puts it into a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. The footage shown at E3 rocked my socks off. Handheld mini nuclear bomb launcher + "bloody mess" mode = ridiculous amounts of win.

If you do, know that in my research for the pick it turns out that there is a gold version you can buy online from "Steam" that apparently has a couple of ciritical errors in it (including one that messes up the balance of the financial system), and they have been disinclined to fix the error. So it might be more of an ebay purchase. Can't have mine however. :p

I'm surprised this lasted this long with all the talk about it in the "anyone interested..." thread.

Well since you've opened the can of worms and I'm not playing, I must say that the first 2 Fallout games are some of my absolute favorites, along with the game that inspired them which I will be kind enough to not name right now. I remember playing Fallout so extensively that I would dream about random encounters when I wasn't playing it. Unfortunately I never fully beat part 2. Can't wait for 3.
