Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

With these extra six picks not only do I feel the liberty of taking picks I've never listened to before, but also I'm looking at some that only have one or two albums or who are just starting out and that I might not have noticed if they had come and gone 20 years ago. This artist has a sound that just puts me in a good mood. My next pick is...

John Legend

So these extra picks will allow me one more metal band and while there are 2 or 3 I would strongly consider the fact that these guys are still on the board absolutely floors me. Have to be a top 5 all time metal band. Have to be. Judas Priest

Along with Black Sabbath another innovator of the genre. Arguably the best metal vocalist of all time. Arguably the best twin guitar attack of all time. They took it from a heavy blues base hard rock to traditional metal all the way up to speed metal on Painkiller. Oh and don't forget the keyboard experiment which frankly I don't hate half as much as most. I am not so much concerned with their Ripper era material and Halford's return, but it may be fun to dust off once in a while almost like a bonus band (same reason I was a bit bummed to miss out on Maiden). And as a bonus they totally popularized gay s&m bondage wear with a largely unsuspecting audience.
Faves:
And of course all the hits
Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight, You've Got Another Thing Coming etc...
Spike and i were just talking about them earlier. i'm actually kind of glad you picked them because i was going back and forth on whether or not to pick them myself. I ended up hesitating though because I think they got kind of corny in the 80s, their 70s stuff is great though. They're a band I like but don't love, I guess. Anyways, good pick. They have a lot of albums and most of them are good.

Yes they did, but I do have a soft spot for Turbo Lover and Parental Guidance. That Johnny B Goode crap, no. But Painkiller more than made up for it. What band that has been around for 40 years hasn't gone through down periods? I think Maiden is the only other metal band picked that went through their down period and managed to rebound (both under similar circumstances, not surprisingly). Megadeth may be better now but I always thought they hit extreme highs and lows even at their creative peak.

I wasn't really talking about consistency. Consistency wise Judas Priest had a better batting average than most bands of any genre. I didn't mean corny to = bad. I just didn't care for the style shift they made after Stained Class. Songs like Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law, Another thing Coming, etc. are good, but a little on the corny, fist pumping anthem side. For me, stuff like Beyond the Realms of Death, Victim of Changes, Tyrant, Exciter, Dissident Aggressor, etc. are where it's at. That's the "real" JP to me but unfortunately they pretty much abandoned that style after 1979.

Ha ha! I was wondering when Judas Priest was going to be picked up. Rob Halford is one of my favorite vocalists of all time (good God can that man sing). Right up there with Freddie Mercury.
Pound for pound, I think Priest's entire volume is right up there with many rock acts, even with some of the oddities that they've produced. l even admit to owning Nostradamus. I think their hits are extremely well done, even if "anthemy". If only the Odyssey were designed as awesomely as Hellion/Electric Eye - I'd probably be driving one right now.

As for my favorite? Tough call - I'll never change the station when they're on, but I particularly enjoy:

So you're talking more about the "Americanized" Priest vs. the synth era. I agree somewhat, but I think British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance produced so many anthems that they could hardly be called corny. Just more of an evolution, and it wasn't exactly the kind that is 100% pure commercial driven like some bands did in the 90s.

It's just a style thing for me. It's not that I don't like 80s JP, I just think they devolved a bit rather than evolved. Bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica were getting more sophisticated with each release while JP was getting more juvenile with each release. But really, i'm not knocking them, just pointing out that I think they were a better and more interesting band in the 70s.

So far I am lacking a lot of the diversity seen in other lists. Sure I have dabbled in reggae, folk, metal, and ska, but who am I kidding, my list is all about RNR. The addition of this next band continues this pattern but with a very distinctive flavor. With my 22nd pick, I select:

Tito & Tarantula

Latin rock, with a tinge of punk undertones this band helps pump up the volume when I get sick of listening to all of my easier listening "light rock". With all of the Tarantino/Rodriguez fans in the Video Vault draft, I'm surprised to see this genre relatively untouched, this band included. More for me :).

I could almost resist mentioning this famous not work friendly scene in From Dusk Till Dawn...almost:

Time to take a smart chick:

Lisa Loeb

I considered literally dozens of ladies and lady groups for this spot before settling on the girl in the glasses. I think I perhaps have more 2 or 3 song female artists than any other group of artists for me, and a big thing here given the island premise is that not ony does Ms. Loeb have 4 or 5 top songs that are regulars for me, but I can listen deep into her catalog before hitting the first song that makes me want to hit the skip button. I also felt like my list has long been unbalanced toward the louder more uptempo stuff. That is where my tastes are centered -- I think perhaps as a level/analytical person I like music to get me up while excitable people sometimes like music to "chill" to, whatever that may mean. But still, the balance on my list doesn't reflect the balance on my ipod so I wanted to try to correct that somewhat.

P.S. Somewhat bizarrely Lisa has spent a nice chunk of the 00s putting out children's albums. I won't be taking those along. So I hereby delegate Lisa's version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to pdx.

To this point, my draft has pretty much ignored Canada (though had Jalfa not stolen the Weakerthans...) Well, I’m going to change that with: Metric

I believe Metric is the only band that can count me as a fan because of the weekly free song on the iTunes music store, but hey, it’s evidence that at least sometimes it works! Really, it only took that little bend leading to the chorus of Combat Baby to convince me that I needed to buy the album. They’re an indie-rock band with plenty of keyboard, and who hates that? Lead singer Emily Haines is the daughter of a noted poet, and while her lyrics aren’t always poetry, there seems to be a literary aesthetic more often than not.

Years active: 1998-present
Catalog: 4 studio albums (~2h45m)
Landmark songs: Combat Baby, Dead Disco, Handshakes, Help I’m Alive, Gold Guns Girls
Songs I keep coming back to:
Probably my favorite Metric song, excuse her French (One NSFW lyric, under spoiler just in case)
This one’s a bit different, with only a sparse keyboard and a vocal:

I'll always picture her like this

Great butt for a white girl!

This artist has a pretty small catalog (2 albums) since she just debuted in the last 3 years, but I absolutely love her voice and sound. The fact that it's so different from alot of other young female acts today makes her music that much more appealing.

Adele

I had a note to myself to take a closer look at her for my final pick, but only having 2 albums was a holding me back.

Next up for me is:

Collective Soul

Always liked these guys, I think they're very underrated. I had a very strange feeling that Jespher may steal them from me, but that wasn't the case so I'll gladly snatch them.

Shoot. I had planned to pick her instead of Legend this round thinking exactly the same thing as you. But I hesitated because I wondered if it was worth it with Jewel already on the island. So I guess like Mariah earlier I hesitate and I lose.

Metric is pretty cool. Would've put you on quite a lot of Canadian bands other than Metric, though.
Well, I suppose there are a few left out there (kind of all over the board, musically) that I could consider, but most of the O, Canada that I'd be after is already out of play. maybe after the draft you'll have to point me at the bands you think I ought to like - maybe we just haven't been introduced yet!

Yeah, I really enjoyed several Collective Soul albums throughout my earlier years. I don't listen to them as much anymore, but they were a workout mix staple for many years. Similar to the Goo Goo Dolls pick by kingsnation I went back and forth whether or not to include them in my very 90s centric list. Looks like the choice was made for me. Nice pick-up :).

Oddly that was exactly where I was with Collective Soul. I considered them, but for somre reason their music just seems to have gotten tired for me more quickly than other favorites from that same era.

I will select the nerd rock of Fountains of Wayne
I have all of their albums and they are all fantastic... great rock and roll music with a nerdy feel... they had one hit, "Stacy's Mom", which is not real typical of their music... but oh well, it is a fun song.

Then I will select the 60's Sunshine Superman, Donovan... great mellow music; excellent songwriter... just have always been a huge fan; must have him on my island.
