Tropical Island Movie Draft - Coaches Poll

The Tropical Island Movie Draft has official come to a close and it is time to get the playoffs underway. After some discussion in the thread itself, I have came to the decision that we will follow the precedent set by the Desert Island Music Draft and set playoff seedings based on a drafter-only Coaches Poll.

Please follow these simple guidelines when submitting your nominations:

  • Do not vote for yourself! Keep your list to the 15 other drafters only.
  • I hope this is obvious, but don't vote unless you were a drafter in the movie draft. The rest of you will get to have a chance to have your voices heard when the board-wide playoffs begin.
  • Send your lists in by PM with a distinguishable subject line. (e.g. movie draft rankings/coaches poll, etc.)
  • Please write down your nominees in list form and number them accordingly, this makes it easier for me.
  • Don't do what I did in the music draft and not effectively proof-read your list. I don't want any 14 person lists....haha, I still can't believe I did that.
  • Most importantly, vote with integrity! I know many of you (i.e. all of you) like to employ strategy in this game, but do not rank highly a list you think will be perceived as weak (or vice versa) to try to ensure a better match up for yourself in the playoffs. I want honest rankings only. This is of course on the honor system, as I have no way of knowing how your voting, so I will trust all of you to do the right thing. </lawyer>
HEY EVERYONE!!1 RANK ME RELLY HIGH! YEAH ME, TRADEPEJA!!!!!1111!111!11
Please everyone have your polls in by 12:00 A.M. PST August 4th, 2008. If all of the polls are turned in at least 24 hours before said deadline, I'll start the playoffs a day early on the 4th. If not, expect them to start on the 5th. Thanks and happy voting.
SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING HELL YEAH. I SURE HOPE NO ONE FINDS THIS. MAYBE I SHOULDNT HAVE WROTE THIS PART THEN.

You know...I was gonna come in here and post something snarky about the continued insinuation that people are going to mis-rank other lists to gain some benefit...not sure why that bugs me...

However, I must give you props tho tradepeja...you pulled off a cute twist this time...I almost missed it :)

I know you have a bunch of the rankings already - how many are we waiting on?

I haven't done mine...I'm having a MUCH harder time with this one than the album one. There are just so many movies that I, well...don't like at all. I'm sure I have many that people don't like either, but for some reason one movie I don't like in someone's list tends to put a pretty bad taste in my mouth...much more so than in the album thread. Weird...

It was harder for me this time, too. I finally put it together by first going through and ranking everyone based one how many of their films I wished were on my island, and then went from there.

I agree, it was really tough.

My solution to coming across movies I had no interest in or didn't like was to just ignore and erase them completely, with the reasoning that if I was stuck on an island, I'd probably just toss them into the ocean right away.

After that, I took the remaining movies I did like and asked myself for each list "Would I rather be stuck with these four movies I like, or these six movies I like"

Okay I have 7 polls in including mine. The voting is shaping up pretty interestingly, so far with a clear top, middle, and bottom third.

A long way to go though.

btw, Slim, did you do this through Excel? I am.

Yes, must admit this is the first I had gotten around to trying to do this, and it really is difficult. there is not a list out there without at least 1 or 2 good oens on it, and a number of them have half the list as strong movies.

I used the same standards for judging as I did for picking. My feeling is a balanced collection of quality films is best. A little of everything so regardless of my mood or scenario, I can find a movie that suits me on my island, and, of course, the movie must be GREAT.

Eh, to a certain extent "greatness" is not a quality I was looking for in some of the movies. It is whether I like them. Greatness is secondary. I chose my list on my likes, not an estimate of what others might like. You can have the "greatest" movie ever made (according to popular opinion, critic reviews, whatever) and if I don't like it, I'm not wanting it on my island.

But maybe you were just referring to your own "internal" greatness scale and not jut a critical or commercial one?

According to AFI, that would be Citizen Kane ... which, uh, went undrafted.

Rosebud is the least of Charles Foster Kane's problems I guess :D

Hell, half of AFI's Top 10 went undrafted. You could easily make a list of AFI Top 100 movies that went undrafted. In fact, I'll do that right now:

Citizen Kane (1)
Gone With the Wind (4)
The Graduate (7)
On the Waterfront (8)
Singin' in the Rain (10)
Sunset Boulevard (12)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (13)
Some Like it Hot (14)
All About Eve (16)
The African Queen (17)
Chinatown (19)
The Grapes of Wrath (21)
The Maltese Falcon (23)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (30)
High Noon (33)
It Happened One Night (35)
Midnight Cowboy (36)
The Best Years of Our Lives (37)
Double Indemnity (38)
Doctor Zhivago (39)

And that's just out of the top forty...

Well I think clearly illustrating the slight tweak in the draft. If the premise was changed slightly, so you said the Earth is about to explode, and you get to put any 20 movies on a space capsule to shoot out into space as the lone record of mankind having existed, chances are the classics are much more heavily worked over. But as is, the premise is you are on an islnad forever by yourself, and you just get to watch whatever the hell you want forever, so end result = Kung Fu theater. :p

Dude, MST3K would totally be in that capsule :p

Man, I was thinking over movies I would've drafted if we had more spots last night....and I can't believe I had a DiCaprio black out! In fact the whole damn draft did minus Titanic and The Departed

For some reason, Catch Me If You Can and The Aviator went undrafted. I would have totally drafted those if I hadn't had amnesia or whatever made me forget about them

And Aliens, Predator, and Independence Day should be as well - you know, just to show those who might find the capsule we'd kick their a**es in a fight. ;)

You have to be proactive and start the psychological warfare early.

Some Like it Hot and It Happened One Night likely would have been on my list if I owned them, but I managed to stick to my self imposed rule of only selecting movies from my actual collection.

Alright let's step it up. Only a day left and I'm missing 5 submissions. If we don't have at least 13 in by the deadline, I'll just have to randomize the seeding because the sampling field would have been too small.

Nah, just go with what you've got and flip a coin for any ties. You've gone through the trouble of having us vote and we've gone through the trouble of voting, I think I'd (and others as well would?) like to see how the voting shakes out even if not everyone votes.

Sorry, but the less people that vote the harder it makes for anyone who has voted to place high. You realize this once you start putting the votes in that, everytime someone submits a ballot, they drop a few places just because they've inflated the total number of points in the system but obviously without adding any to their own score.

I'm glad you guys vetoed my multiplier idea because looking at it now it would have just made it that much more of a benefit to not vote!

Again, if I get 2 more ballots in, I'll go with it. But as it stands, Three of the top four are people that just simply haven't voted, and that isn't fair.

To get around that you give everybody a 7.5 and the non voter a 0 for each ballot not submitted.

OK, gotcha, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Alright I sent PM's out to the remaining 5, now 4, people that need their ballots in.

I really want a full sample, lets get these in before the deadline. Thanks.
