Training camp reports open thread 2022

That 2nd unit with Murray in it all of a sudden has an insane amount of firepower with Mitchell-Monk-Murray-Holmes-TD/Lyles as your main bench subs too. That's a unit that should dominate pretty much every night; something we haven't been used to in a long time. Hell, that's a better starting 5 than a lot of the last 16 years lol.

I like the idea of focusing the usage better with the starters as well. Like you said, there's just not a lot of shots to go around after Fox/Sabonis/Barnes get their looks. Huerter isn't a low USG guy either. Starting KZ allows his minutes to be more valuable (defending a starting caliber wing) while Murray gets to the be lead with the 2nd unit. We'll see if it works, but I don't mind giving it a month or so to see how it works. I anticipate Murray will take the starting job anyway at some point mid-season.
Agreed and Huerter is another guy we need to get more shots for.

I almost want Monk to start over Huerter. Small sample size but I don't like what I see from Monk's shot creation abilities. He was real solid last year when he wasn't asked to do much of that. I think playing with Fox and Sabonis might help with that but it's just based off of a small sample size so we'll see what happens this year. So far he's been a very poor scorer and looks like he's being asked to do too much off the bench. Davion doesn't exactly quarterback the game from the PG position so it'll be interesting to see what happens this year. Murray could help mask a lot of those deficiencies if he plays a lot with the 2nd unit but if you replace Murray with Lyles or KZ, the offense from that unit could potentially look dismal.

I agree the 2nd unit is deeper. But this is a star's league. Domas is prob the best bet. Need another. I'm not convinced that other player is on the roster--he's in Indy.

From Spotrac:
Merrill has a $150,000 Guar up front,
KZ,Delly,Chima all have $250,000 Guar up front
KZ,Delly,Chima Have $500,000 Guar on Opening night
All 4 players have 1st year Salary fully Guar on 1/10/23

So if Kings decide to keep Merrill and drop one of the other 3 Players before Opening Night
It costs $250,000 instead of $150,000
Merrill is insurance in case of major injury of one of the other three
According to Hoopshype:
Sam Merrill:. Only $150,000 guaranteed in 2022/23, HoopsHype has learned. Contract becomes fully guaranteed if not waived by September 29, 2022. No money guaranteed in 2023/24. Contract becomes fully guaranteed if not waived by September 29, 2022.

Those are weird details for a training camp deal. I would approach that info with some cautious skepticism.

I haven't watched too much Monk with us yet, but yeah he really thrived once he embraced that spacer/off-ball scorer role with the Lakers and he started doing that his last year with CHA too. We haven't seen the rotations tightened up yet, so I'm hoping once we key into our 8-9 man rotation more, we see that start to play that out where he's getting more minutes with Fox/Sabonis/Barnes and it's just not straight hockey sub rotations like we've been doing in the preseason. I'm extremely high on his offensive game though. Dude has been an impact stud on offense the last 2 years. I'll trust the growth until he gives us a reason not to. He should be on a short-list for 6 MOTY candidates with his expected role on this team and if he continues on his upward trend of getting better.

What's interesting is Monk and Huerter are very similar offensive players; sneaky good on-ball playmaking, can space on and off-ball, both thrive when they're next to high USG studs or can take over a game if needed. I do like keeping Huerter's size with the starters though and he is here on that 4/60 deal... he's a long-term piece. Lets develop that chemistry now.

I, for one, don’t think it’s an accident the Lakers all of a sudden suck and have completely screwed themselves for the foreseeable future!
honestly they did that when they traded for AD. The grand irony is that for almost any other team except maybe the Celtics, you'd trade one championship parade for what they have coming to them. For the Lakers they get an asterisked championship nobody could watch live to go with the 16 or so others. big whoop. this one can probably sit next to the NBL championship. it's like Ric Flair being given another title run by his son in law.
