[Game] Timberwolves @ Kings - 10/29/16 - 7:30 PM PDT

Talent level? Wolves have the edge on talent level? MAYBE in the future. As far as right now is concerned, no. Gay is a better player than Wiggins right now. Cousins is on a different planet compared to the entire existence of their franchise with the exception of prime KG, and even then Cousins is still better than prime KG. The coaching comparison is negated by the fact that Joerger has vets to execute his game plan, Thibs does not. This should be a double digit Kings win.

I'm not sure how I missed this gem

When I first read the Prime KG vs Prime Boogie post I gasped. However, after I thought it through, it does not sound as crazy.

Garrnett's 4 best seasons were a 4 season stretch in Minnesota. He basically was a 22-13 player those seasons. Boogie's last few seasons show he is basically (for now but still getting better) a 23-12 player.

Garnett has two clear advantages: Assists and wins. KG had several seasons of 4 or 5 assists that cannot be understated. In KG's last season in Minnesota, they went to the WCF and he won MVP. To be fair, it wasn't until his 10th season in Minnesota that they went that far. Boogie has time.

You either have talent or you don't. It's not found in the future. Experience is found in the future. Sorry, but Wiggins is unequivocally a better than Gay right now. In fact, he was unequivocally a better player than Gay last year. Wiggins talent level is at least as great as Leonard's. Wiggins has the potential to be a tremendous 2-way player, just like Leonard currently is. He is a fantastic talent. Superstar potential. (Note I didn't say he is a superstar, just that he has that type of ceiling).

Then there is Towns. He is an extraordinarily talented player. As far as talent is concerned he's the equivalent of Cousins, maybe even greater than Cousins. I can't believe the stuff I've seen from him, such as making a step back jumper from 3 point land look as easy as a Chris Paul shot. Has a great feel for the game. Is Towns in his 2nd year as good as Cousins in his 7th? Probably not. But it's not a large gap.

Overall, the Wolves have HUGE talent on their team. Their challenge is going to be like OKC - keeping their hugely talented young team in tact and having all of their talented players buy in to the team and the defensive approach of their new coach. By the way, speaking of defense, their coach has great defensive talent to work with. Not just Towns and Wiggins, but also LaVine, who can shut you down on the wing. He shut down Collison like nobody's business last year.

And then there is the game and it's tonight and it will be my first n the Golden 1. Nothing makes a better game than talent and real competitors.

KAT vs Boogie? yes please! It's going to be mostly Koufos guarding him so that ought to be a fun match up ...I expect a big game out of KAT, he has expanded his range too so he can score from anywhere now. It seems to me that the last couple of match ups Wiggins has lit up Rudy or whoever else is guarding him from the Kings, I wonder if that trend shall continue. Zach Lavine can go off as well, he is a streaky shooter. I'd love for them to prove me wrong and get a win here but I don't see it happening.
Why don't you just go all in on the TWolves and say that Dieng is a tough guard and that Mohammed gets the better of us and that we can't match up with Dunn at all, etc, etc.

You must just be trying to push buttons because its obvious to everyone that this is not a Karl coached team anymore and that the defense from the Karl era can't be just dismissed, right? Riiigggghhht?

I predicted a Kings win in the other thread, but I also wouldn't be surprised if we lost this one. They owned us last season and their top 3 or 4 is better than ours plus they got a really good coach this year as we did. Cousins/KAT is close to a wash, so I think Rudy is going to have to step up in this game and we need to have that defensive effort we showed in the first two games. Last year's team had a tendency to take these games off, so this will be a test of if they have really changed for the better.

Last year CAN NOT be used as a basis to determine tonight's outcome.

Remember, the Kings actively wanted to lose many of those games last year, so as not to give enough victories to George Karl that he would stay as their coach.

This is the first season since the 9-4 Malone start 2 years ago that the players wanted to win.

It's a whole new season, and a whole new team (in more ways than one).

Kings win, 104-92.

Upon this game depends which one of these pre-canned narratives will be in Spike's Monday Power Rankings collection:

1) We win:
Dave Joerger has the Kings playing defense. They have won 2 of their first 3 and earned praise from Pop after they challenged the mighty Spurs for a half.

2) We lose:
DeMarcus Cousins says he likes Dave Joerger, but with the Kings dropping 2 of 3 to start the season again, expect the Boogie trade rumors to only grow louder as the season progresses.

Did the Kings become defensive stalwarts all of a sudden in a span of two regular season games and 5 preseason games that I don't maybe know about? You don't think Wiggins is a tough guard? Do you really think Gay matched up on him is a positive?

Wiggins is good, but maybe isn't quite as good as you are making him out. Kind of a disappointment thus far really, although I've had doubts about his superstarness since college. Very good player, but no more scary than a DeMar Derozan at the moment.

And yes actually, we may have just like that become defensive stalwarts. You add a defensive coach, a bunch of vets who have played good defense over their careers and can respond to that coach, a franchise player who has openly been pining for a return to a defensive focus, and all of a sudden everything changes. We won't lead the league, but we are set up to be top half and maybe even threatening a Top 10 defense. Its that stark a change. Coaching and buy in really matter.

Timberwolves are a scary team with all that they have... I just don't know if we'll be able to hold back KAT and Wiggins from going off. LaVine killed us a few times off the bench too. They're a tough defensive team as well.

I think this game will come down to how our bench plays. If role players step up, then this is a W.

Kings win 94-92

First time in the new building!! I'm loving it

I love how it still feels like the old arena in terms of that college closeness and fans being "on top" of the players

Lavine can now be guarded by Afflalo or Ben or Temple if we need Temple to shut him down.....far cry from Ben, Bellinelli or DC last year. Doesn't mean Lavine can't have a good game. But I like our chances in not allowing every guard in every game to go off last year.

If you don't want to see it then that is your choice. If you can't see it, then I guess you will need more viewing time to see it.

Actually, the idea that they are a good defensive team is a myth. Last year they finished last in pts allowed & defensive fg%, and were 28th in pt differential. Now that will likely change with the new Coach, but we haven't seen enough to know yet.

I think our new guys need to show up if were going to win. DMC needs them to fill the scoring and defence rolls, i.e it can't be all DMC, he needs help. We do that, we win.

The key to the game will be Cousins, Gay and Afflalo being physical with Towns, Wiggins and Lavine. If you can wear them down physically all of a sudden theyre uncomortable and outside shots miss. KAT is dangerous for Cousins, sweet stroke from outside and ability to take you off the dribble. Hes basically a quicker version of Cousins except Cousins is more dominant inside at this point.

This is currently the front page of ESPN NBA for me... So I think point 2 is dead on.

Isn't that really what it boils down to in the end? Consistency to play defense through out a season? I don't think it's too far fetched on my part to expect that much at least.

may? Consistency matters too, despite the results. You act like I talked Wiggins up in a top 10 player kind of way...Wiggins has torched Rudy the last two seasons, from what I recall...that's why I feel he has the potential to do the same tonight if Rudy continues to defend him for long durations.
