Thought Experiment, Do you Keep George Karl If He Makes the Playoffs?

If we surge to .500 and squeak into the playoffs, does that save George Karl's job?

How, exactly, does that work? Vlade goes around and interviews other coaches with Karl still officially in place? Do you see any coach agreeing to interview in such a situation?

Sort of.
You look who is available, if someone is candidate you would like to consider, you gather information about them, background and such.

Then you make the decision if it is worth it to the team to kick Karl to the curb and officially start talks or not.

Whoa. Okay.

Sorry, but I think I'll wait for a little better source than being mentioned in Hoopshype rumors and "tweeted about a couple of times."
Pretty sure Karl himself said on the Grant show that he will need to go in for a knee replacement after the season. It was in response that he doesn't coach much and doesn't get out of hus chair during the game.

I mean if that's the case, he shouldn't be coaching anymore...period.

Yeah, I owe Siranthony an apology (sorry, SA!). I got a private message from someone I really trust who said Karl does, in fact, need a knee replacement.

My bad.

I think Riley might have had the same thing. Some old coach did.

Remember a lot of these guys, Karl included, were once players, so they abused their bodies when they were young and have to pay for it late in life.

If we make it to the playoffs I believe it would be in spite of George Karl. He is the reason I don't think we make them. He is the reason we aren't a 30+ win team right now. The play calls, the substitutions, the lack of motivation, the lack of organized offense or defense is all on Karl. A remedial coach with a sense of how to use this personel would suffice. George has no idea how to utilize the tools he has. The sooner he is fired the better. That's my opinion anyway

First off, I just don't think this team has the inner strength and fortitude it would take to go on the kind of run of wins that would be required to make the playoffs.
They've simply let too many winnable games go by without trying hard enough.

But if they did go on a tear and make the playoffs, it certainly wouldn't be because they suddenly bought into Karl's "systems" and they started leading to victories - it would be because their sheer talent would overwhelm their opponents.

And hell, no - I wouldn't want to retain Karl regardless of what happens the rest of the season - he's the MAIN REASON why this team has not performed up to their abilities this year!

Now, if he magically changes his entire system and comes up with plays that lead to the Kings winning all those games (and Rondo and Cousins didn't just do it themselves), then I'd consider keeping him next year.

And yeah, we all know what the chances of that are.

This is not a "thought experiment" it is a "fantasy scenario" :)
I beg to differ.

Mark my words:
I think we can, AND WILL, do 18-10 OR BETTER to close the season.
Furthermore, my guess is that anything at or over the 0.500 mark may suffice for 6th or 7th seed in this year's WC.
(Hopefully 6th, to avoid the Spurs...)

Fantasy? Fine. Let's watch it unfold...

The guy I think you guys are talking about is Phil Jackson.

If we go 500. than next season you fire Karl and move Gay and let go of Rondo and build a athletic energtic team around Cousins

If we go like 650. than Karl passes Malone as the GOAT and you keep the core in tact and Karl stays coach

If we go way below 500. than it's time to clean house everyone from players (aside from WCS) is on the table and Karl/Vlade both get the boot.

First, I don't think .500 will do it anymore. Anything over it may be sufficient (19-9!). I don't consider it impossible, but it requires superb effort in every game. In the end, you're looking at GSW or the Spurs. With all the optimism I have, it'll be a first round exit. Nevertheless, you'll lose to the best or second best team in the league and the likely NBA champion, so I take it with open arms. Would actually be a fantastic ride for the rest of the season.

He needs to go......minority owners just need to stay in their lane. Nail the next hire and get things on track.

I understand that, but I do not see coaches attempting to coach that can't even stand for a extended period of time or try to coach despite throat cancer. It's not a knock on Karl, it's just understanding when it's time to hang it up.

People have knee replacements all the time and are actually able to live full productive lives afterwards.

I don't doubt it one bit...he can go ahead and live his life as he pleases so long as he is no longer parking his behind on that bench with no emotion and just staring into thin air. Lifeless.

Even if we somehow miraculously made the playoffs, you'd still have the same issues. Karl will keep this team in mediocrity (or worse) until he's gone. Even making the playoffs wouldn't be a building block.

Now hear me out. Winning with a guy like Bradley Stevens is like losing weight and getting your finances in order. Yeah it's not all gonna happen at once. Yeah there will be setbacks. But every bill that gets paid off, every pound lost, is a move towards the ultimate goal.

Winning with Karl is a drug. A fleeting feeling of elation, only bring yourself back into the perpetual despair that your life has become. There is no end-game. A win is just a brief reprieve from the situation we find ourselves in. If we stick with Karl ultimately in three-four years we'd find ourselves in the exact same position, if not worse.

If this team somehow makes the playoffs with the brutal schedule ahead then Karl should definitely keep his job, he would deserve it, would be a disgrace if he got fired. It's amazing to me how so many people want to blame him for everything when things go bad and then if things go well it must be the team playing well in spite of him, can't possibly be that he is doing a great coaching job. Believe me, if this team makes the playoffs then he is doing a great coaching job.

The thing is that it doesn't matter anyway, this team is not making the playoffs and they won't be anywhere near it. It was a nice win against the Nuggets, but it was a game where everything seemed to go right, other than the turnovers, and we won by only 6, really only 4 with McLemore's free basket at the end. I think we are lucky to win 2 of the next 9.
